    I've gone back to many of our decade old encaps with 20 mil vapor barriers and never noticed a urine smell or separation of the glue. I can't imagine it would separate unless the crawl routinely experiences standing water, in which case it would need a drainage system to prevent the tape from give way regardless.

      Good to know! We don't run into the urine odors with all reinforced vapor barriers, but we do have crawls that have them installed that smell like that from time to time, even ones with lots of ventilation. You are definitely right about the drainage system if they have standing water. Thanks so much for sharing.

    What is the permeance rating of your 10mil material? The American Concrete Institute states ACI 302.1R: Guide for Concrete Floor and Slab Construction states, “Several vapor retarder materials have been incorrectly referred to and used by designers as vapor barriers. True vapor barriers are products that have a permeance (water-vapor transmission rating) of 0.00 perms when tested per ASTM E 96.”

      David - our 10 mil vapor barrier has a permeance rating of 0.08 perms.

    Stego Wrap 15-mil is a one piece product that is very good. Not hard to work with at all

    Great video with helpful information! How do you feel about thick vapor barriers on the floor with insulation? Products like Radiant Shield Pro 90-mil. Is 90-mil necessary? Or does 12-mil do the job just as good?
    Thank you for your help.

    10 mil was showing too many impressions, 20 mil with a Hilti and it will look perfect for many many years. Quality tape is important as well.

    Have you ever heard of using felt underneath the plastic to keep it for poking holes it? I saw it done and it looks like a bad idea as far as mold goes. 🤷🏼‍♂️

      Yes, we use felt on many of our encapsulations. Here is a video talking about the two types of underlayments we've used: ua-cam.com/video/3U73iDxb7ZU/v-deo.html

    Hey great video..i am almost ready to purchase your solid vapor Barrier for my diy encapsulation, my question is, will the 10 mil keep the moisture out just as well as the 12 mil? Is the only real difference between the two is that the 12 is a little thicker and more durable? I have a very damp crawl space so there will definitely be water under the barrier around the perimeter of my house where the water is channled to a sump pump, so would the 10 work as well as the 12 to keep the moisture and odors under the barrier, thanks

      @CrawlSpaceNinja  5 років тому

      Hello David. You are correct, the difference is the the thickness and durability with the 10 and 12 mil vapor barrier. Also, I would recommend a dehumidifier for your crawl space.

      @@CrawlSpaceNinja thanks for the reply, i pain on going with your bundle, vapor barrier and dehumidifier.. my opening is only 13 inches tall, will your aprilair dehumidifier accommodate that opening?also, you talk in the video about bringing the barrier down the wall and 6ft or so onto the ground, can you not start on the wall and just continue on through the craw space without cutting it 6ft out from the wall? I assume the vapor barrier for the wall is the same as on the ground

    How do you attach your vapor barrier to the under side of your floor joists? I was gonna staple to hold in place then screw on thin hard plastic strips to hold my (2) 6 mill visqueen strips in place.
    My house is off the ground on a slab 4 cinder blocks high in south Louisiana so almost 90% humidity in the summer so trying to keep out as much humidity as possible.

    • @CrawlSpaceNinja
      @CrawlSpaceNinja  3 роки тому

      We do not recommend attaching vapor barrier to your floor joists as it can trap moisture and cause structural damage over time. Learn more about this here: ua-cam.com/video/80OSZlIGwIY/v-deo.html 4 blocks high should allow you to install the vapor barrier on the ground with overlapped and taped seams and have it mechanically attached to the walls.

    What's your experience with using 20-mil vapor barrier?

    What about for mobile homes? Underneath, I mean.

    • @CrawlSpaceNinja
      @CrawlSpaceNinja  4 роки тому +2

      Having any kind of vapor barrier is better than none at all. With mobile homes that are not on foundations, it is hard to do a full encapsulation, but you can still lay the vapor barrier and tape the seams and it will help reduce the amount of humidity that gets into your crawl space.
