The Oscars wanted pop singers singing these tunes. Disney probably wanted people to see a glimpse of what they could do with these movies in Broadway as they said that they'd have to use the original voice actors or not have the songs performed at all. The Oscars thankfully obliged.
I've been familiar with his work for a long time but, I truly had no idea he did the voice! I was 11-12 when the movie came out and never put 2 and 2 together. This just makes it so much better!!
Remined me of Rodney Alcala, lol. Didn't help that the character of Gaston was a creep. But I'm sure Richard is a very nice person, and he does have a fantastic voice. I think it was just the hair, lol.

I think when Howard insisted on casting in New York so they could take their pic from the broadway talent that they wouldnt get in LA it was maybe his way of bringing it to broadway. I went to Disneyworld floria just after it premiered so I was there last week of nov first week of December and they actually had people performing the songs in the park then!
One wonderful thing about UA-cam is we can see Jerry singing in his Broadway roles, something few of us ever had the opportunity to do. To actually see him singing “Try To Remember” always made me emotional. After losing him I just flat out cry. And I’m always thankful he wanted that role on LAW & ORDER. Lennie Briscoe every week, that was a joy. Now, I can watch him often. Love you Jerry, and miss you terribly.
My husband showed me this clip several years ago after Jerry Orbach's passing. He looked so happy and healthy in this performance; this is how I want to remember him -- as a candlestick and as Lenny in Law and Order. I am so grateful for videos like this to remember a star's variety of performances. Thank you.

I miss Jerry Orbach so much on Law and Order. I love Lennie! I heard that he and Jesse Martin, Ed, also from the stage, would break into show tunes at the drop of a hat between scenes.
They would try to one up each other. They were both Tony winners. Jesse was original cast of Rent. Jerry was original cast of The Fantastiks. He was also original cast Chicago. They were both featured on The Tonys so you can watch them both on UA-cam.
This film was literally a defibrillator for Disney Studios. Only up for them from this point on. To be alive and a child during this renaissance was a privilege I didn’t know I had.
Jerry's performance is bittersweet for me. His passing really affected me, I sobbed when I heard about his death. He will always be the best detective in L&O as well as a great performer.
The cast is nothing less than Amazing Jerry Orbach sounded like himself rather than Lumiere singing Be Our Guest. Paige O'Hara looks exactly like Belle from the movie I think that was the goal of the animators. To make the characters look very similar to the voice actors
Regarding Jerry Orbach's live performance, I'm guessing that it originally took some vocal preparation for him to get into accent for recording Lumiere for the film. Plus it was a few years since he had recorded his vocals. I don't think he had time to really get back into Lumiere for the Oscars. But Jerry is a Broadway pro and still gave a great performance.
@@alessandraiannino7242 I know, I saw B&B 2017 too. Emma Watson is smart and pretty, but cannot sing. The movie, a musical, suffers greatly for that fact. Another musical, Jungle Book, was remade a year earlier, with Christopher Walker cast as King Louie, who in the original sang an incredibly energetic song (my favorite in the Disney canon, apart from Be Prepared). Walken clearly is about the furthest thing from a singer you can find: he is a talker, strictly speaking. I almost cried in the theater it was so painful to watch. Thankfully I learned my lesson and didn’t see the Lion King 2019, but I know that the actor who played Scar was not a singer in the least and that he talked thru his song. This is all part of a tragic pattern of mishandling their animated musicals which Disney seems stuck in. I was merely agreeing with you and citing another case.

I loved and admired Richard White for the first time from Yeston-Kopit's musical "Phantom", to Showboat, The New Moon 1989,... He was excellent! Not only does he look very tall, his singing-voice is deep and warm with a tenor and baritone voice, but his voice is very sweet. In real life, he is very courteous, humble and good-natured.
I didn't know what Richard White looked like in real life so when he came out I was like "wow." Also that moment when he stroked his hair as he sang "who's as beautiful as me" was just perfect. It's also weird to hear Jerry Orbach sing "Be Our Guest" without a French accent...it sounds so different! Also is it just me or are the lyrics slightly different than the movie version?
I don't know if Jerry forgot the lyrics at times or if the changes were on purpose, but I caught them, too. And I wish Angela had performed " Beauty and the Beast." That and Jerry not having the accent the whole way through are my only complaints.

This movie was the product of broadway talent coming to the screen to create this amazing animation. I don’t think it’s ever been matched and the live action remake suffered for not following the same steps.
Major misstep to make a live action without regard to the singing. The music was a big part of why the original is so beloved. Auto-tune and amateur voices just cannot recreate that magic.
