A pre-owned Rolex dealer would probably be. Because they don't want another SA to get the sale to someone else later.

I went through this process with a Zenith last month. My local AD wasn't really willing to play ball at all. I even offered to wire the cash, but the discount would have only saved me the taxes essentially. He tried to offer me a watch winder, but I don't use winders, so little benefit. Eventually, a friend connected me with a dealer out of state who got me a fantastic price, and I was able to register the watch with a full warranty. Buying through my local AD would have been a fun experience, but it wasn't worth thousands of dollars to me.
Excellent comment. I get that some dealers don't want to discount. But the consumer needs to find the deal that works for them. I think a lot of us have had good and bad AD experiences
The AD was a schmuck. Go elsewhere. It is important for the buying experience to be pleasant. Otherwise, every time you look at the watch you’ll be reminded of the acquisition process.

Good conversation, guys. AD's that exert sales pressure these days are getting a adios from me. Good negotiation tips too. Be reasonable with the offer, know what the market will bear for the watch and have cash in hand. Works well from me!
I always buy from a dealer except for my Grand Seiko sbgy026 because they only made 100 of them and they were allocated from jump. But I always pull out my loupe.
i've had a lot of bad experience with my rolex dealer, so all the other brands ive wanted that the rolex AD carried, I've bought from other shops because they give me a great experience. Shoutout to Royal Jewelers in Massachusetts .
Great advice, Bruce. Jomashop current price on bracelet w/ added rubber strap is $6,550 (but in very dark blue).
I got my Chronomaster Open with the El Primero 3604 movement through Jomashop earlier this year. Fantastic watch and $3,625 off list!

My advice to Tony for his next purchase. Straight up tell the sales rep that this is a very important purchase for yourself and you would appreciate not to be rushed on your experience purchasing that piece. If that sales rep is worth his salt he will understand inmediately and dial it down two clicks.

I would not buy a Zenith for my first large purchase personally, if your in no rush wait for a used model you will get 50% off but if your buying Zenith buy their Chronographs.
I love Zenith, the design, the history, the complexity. I've gone to Switzerland for work multiple times a year for 25 years and know the reputation it carries there amongst people who know watches. When the time came for me to get my Zenith Chronomaster Open this year I saw no reason to deal with an AD when Jomashop is has plenty at 30 - 40% less. I don't need the ass kissing or audition process of an AD at USD3,000, I am already in the factories making their parts and subassemblies 🙂
Frustrating ADs are all the more reason to go to a reputable grey dealer like Jomashop. They buy the watches forced on European ADs which they know they can't sell at the price the AD bought them for then release them on the market here for thousands less. I bought a quality watch so I wouldn't need a multi-year AD warranty and have one through Joma if it were to go sour in three years.
I bought a zenith defy skeleton in January 2024. They had it in black, I wanted it in blue. 2 months later one arrived. They called me. I was in the next day. I loved it. I said I’ll but it now at the right discount. I asked for 15% on the basis I could get in on chrono 24 for less, but I’d rather buy from the AD. They bit, I bought. And they had another customer who was interested but I was there, ready willing and able to buy. (And I did). Went back and bought 3 more straps (full price) lol. And I liked them, they deal in other brands, and I’ll be going back to the same AD to buy my next watch.

An AD is supposed to be working for you and making your buying process as easy as possible, if they're not doing that I'd go elsewhere.

I live in Switzerland and I only know one guy in Biel but he's not an Zenith AD just AD for other shitty brands so he's happy that I buy him more expensive watches. But I never got better than 20-25% for Omega JLC, etc...
Only people in Switzerland who get that, are resellers on 2nd hand market (coz they buy big quantity/year) or employees from Swatch Group, Richemont, or Rolex...
At least it's not with Bucherer that you'll get that...
Have him go to a Rolex AD and then he'll think the Zenith AD was a good time.
Bruce, why would someone NOT buy new from Jomashop? I will always buy from an AD if it is only a 10% discount, but what about 50%? I sometimes see huge discounts on Bucherer and others, so why would I not take a huge discount? Are lemons a common occurrence?
I bought a couple watches from jomashop.
The constellation Omega was 56% Off from 6800 to 2950. I will gladly pay the service fee for that discount.
I don't go grey often personally as I've had 2 significant issues with watches that I had to return. But everyone is different
Really interesting topic as we've all probably had different experiences good and bad with Authorised dealers. One of the strangest I've had was when a sales lady was knocking other brands and telling the history of her product. So bizarrely I became an advocate for the defense.
Important to remember we only know a version of 50% of the story , but, nobody likes to be bullied and I'm sure Zenith would be furious.
This format is terrific by the way as you two come across really genuine watch oficionados.

Good topic dudes. These are always fun to watch. A young aggressive salesman will always put me off. Being really nice, not overly pushy or overly complementary is what speaks to me. When it's clearly too large and saying that is a perfect fit----- well then bye. When I tell them my collection and then they say well then you need this, well that's not what drives me- I just want something that speaks to my craziness.
Lol I can't tell you the number of times I've overheard sales staff saying, 'oh that looks perfect on you' at various ADs

I used to be a Zenith AD sales rep (and actually kinda got the job because I knew what Zenith was in the first place).
That sales rep sounds obnoxious and is probably doing the "ABC" thing, which is "always be closing". It's actually not ineffective, in the general sense, *but* it's probably not well suited to most people looking to buy a Zenith. It'd probably be very effective on a pre-owned Rolex or something, and maybe some Omegas, etc. A Zenith buyer is probably more about affirming the qualities of the brand, and knowing that *they* know (Zenith *and* other brands), and the Defy Skyline would especially benefit from access to a full length mirror.
Nice Christopher Ward Twelve! But seriously, this is a pretty piece and I can imagine plenty of wrists it would suit, mine included, so maybe I'll be able to luck out if I ever go for one since it's a bit off the radar!
I originally got the Christopher Ward Twelve... But received it 3 times with scratches... Had enough, so that's what made me appreciate trying watches in store more. So that's what lead me to try on the Zenith Defy 36mm.
Zenith is way too overrated. Go joma or go home
