Why would a parent should stick with what people think is moraly correct (to pay for their children education) when they are totally unhappy with what they are offering back? If the daughter wants to behave like a grown up adult that won't take any advice or direction, she can get out of the house and look for a job.

I think Alan Jr. was one of my first introductions to alternative looks, and somehow I think I knew even as a kid that joke was stupid. It's wild to me that this is what people were fussing about thirty years ago...
Wow…the way they treated Alan Jr. Saddened me. Yes, he needed to work on grades. But the homophobia came out big time only because he was going against the tired troop of masculinity.
@miserycherub666ah yes, sexism. It’s happened before and it’s still going on to this day. Probably not as bad as it was before though. I could be wrong however, because I’m a goth woman and I was encouraged to express myself creatively since I was 5.
Yes, I am proud to see it. I was kicked out of school for dying my hair rainbow colors and now I’m happy to see that everyone wears colors in their hair. ❤
At 51 years old I’m still enjoying the goth life, going to concerts, wearing cool clothes, and going to goth/industrial club events. It’s not always a “phase”. I’d be proud if that was my cool mom (the one with the leg tattoo and also the green top).😺🤘🏾For those concerned about looking professional when necessary there is a thing called “corporate Goth”. Also there are ways to tone down a bit based on occasion and location.
I always tell my 14 year old to dress for the occasion. If she wants to be alt or goth or emo or whatever folks want to call it these days, that’s fine but you don’t wear your very alt stuff to church or formal events or a job interview. I’m a Christian now but back in my day I was a goth kid, too. My mom gave me room to be myself and I want my daughter to have room to express herself, as well. As long as her grades are good and she doesn’t wear anything offensive or revealing, she has freedom to express herself.
The thing is her mother didn’t always dress or behave this way so it’s a huge change for the kids especially the older one. When you bring kids into this world as a parent put them first! The way a parent talk, behaves, and dresses definitely will influence their children. I was a young mom and wife and when I went through my phase there was a time and place for it. Parents today think they have to reveal everything to their kids who can be easily influenced. As an adult what I do I don’t want my children doing. Period!!

I was one of these alternative kids ( mohawk ,piercings, tattoos, all black clothes)and am still dressing goth today... Just goes to show being yourself isn't a phase. And my mom never gave me a hard time about how I dressed then or now.
i think it's so sad that everyone was acting like that towards the alt mom. i understand being embarrassed about your parents, but like someone said almost every child goes through that. she is genuinely open minded and i would have been so proud that my mom won national awards for her tattoos. that last comment about her body was especially out of line. body shaming can lead directly to eating disorders, which were- and continue to be- so common. i think that comment and the homophobia directed towards alan jr were the most upsetting parts of this episode, i hope both of them are doing well today 🖤
I will say as a kid whose family members worked on shows like these, I was around it a lot! Back then society, the fashion industry, even the government was intentionally trying to push an agenda and influence the behavior and look onto kids! T.V. Entertainment is a genius way to distract people from what was/is really going on in the world! The news, day time talk shows and all the junk out today also influenced people’s emotions and how they vote! People aren’t free thinkers today and that’s how so many laws was passed that took our freedoms away little by little. Working and being around this business you learn a lot and there’s always an agenda being pushed sadly.

I’m so glad my parents weren’t like the parents on this show at all. My sister is into tattoos and piercings. She got her first piercings as a teenager on her ears and once high school ended, she got more on her face and started gauging her ears. Then, she got tattooed. My mom was and still is okay with it because like she says, “If this is the worst thing you can do, so be it. As long as you’re not doing drugs, selling your body, committing crimes, this is no big deal to me.” My dad was a bit apprehensive of my sister getting tattooed but he’s used to it now. I really hope the teens on this episode are doing well now and that if they’re parents, that they encourage their children to express their individuality.
I recorded this episode on a vhs tape! For us 90s kids, This was a really cool way to get inspired and feel like we weren't so alone . I would be walking down the street and people would yell " FREAK!" at me literally every time I went out. It was a very different world back then. I will say this though. In the 90s we had to FIGHT for our individually, get harrassed and bullied, etc. Now its a costume and a lighthearted flippant "goth for a day" thing. Where's the integrity, and more importantly, where is the respect? For those of us who had to crawl so they could run? Im all for the "alt" style. But i think a major difference is that we respected those that came before us and those that we derrived inspiration from. Not trying to start an argument . just see that difference.

As an alternative person I'm considered goth/punk and raver. I don't think expressing yourself is a bad thing as long as your not hurting yourself or others. Being yourself may be crucial for someone to cope with anxiety or trauma's. I wear spikes, studs, leather pants and leather jackets to remain at ease because my attire provides a sense of mental safety for myself.
Im sorry but you failed as a parent if you think your child is a freak because how they choose to express themselves in a harmless way. None of them have behavior issues, do hard drugs, or are an overall menace to society. Shame on parents and the old crone Ricki lake for not being a neutral arbitrator.
I'm watching this in 2024 and thinking how tame it all looks. I liked Ricki, but can you believe she was ever in a John Waters film? She's so straight in her thinking and her take on appearance. Give me the freaky kids any day, they had fun playing with their image while their parents looked uptight and miserable about it.
I'm so glad thing's r different now!! I am 61 year's old and have had purple and pink hair for over 20 year's and I don't intend to change it ever!! It's me!! Everyone knows it's who i am and they love it too.
Im 35 with kids and started wearing grunge looks after 30. I always had colored hair streaks since high school and edgy styles but never went full on because I conformed. This is sad to watch the opinions but beautiful in the way the goth guests explain themselves ❤.
It's those parents that need to check on themselves!! The first girl is well educated and not promiscuous. The mom needs to get real with it!! It's a form of expression!! For goodness, the mom has long fake names!!
These are just young children that are probably going through a phase. They might not even dress the same forever. The girl with the blue hair was ahead of her time. I thought she actually looked pretty edgy. If her mother would see how young girls dress today, she would probably explode. I’ve seen people dress more worse in the street. The mother act like she was so betrayed.😅 😂 it’s not like her daughter burned down a church or orphanage. I don’t have any children. But if I had a daughter that came out like her, that would be so proud. Also, she’s actually a great daughter. It seems like she’s the mother that no matter what you do for her as her child she’s never gonna be happy or satisfied.
That woman who claimed that she's a mom, looking like that is a huge joke!!! She is an embarrement to all who see her. I feel so sorry for her daughter.
Ricki lake came out 93. I was 15 and I’m now 47! The difference with the kids back then and even in their rebellion stage they were well mannered, well spoken for the most part, didn’t cuss or disrespect their parents. So much has changed the way kids speak and treat their parents. And the leather wearing mom must have done something right because her daughter is everything I mentioned above. She’s beautifully dressed, well spoken, and well mannered. She never put her mother down, cussed or called names, just expressed how her mother’s appearance makes her feel.
Robin is 36 and looks 50. She was 17 when she had her kid. Teen preggo and looking old that young, means Robin partied. I wonder if she knows the dad. Haha. What bothers me is that this is in the 90s. I'd jump on Giana's OF instantly.

Alan jr. Is a goat! I think its adorable him and his father are like the same person 😊
The people that called them freaks, are bullies.
Alan Jr sound like todays kids 😂😂😂😂
I'm so glad thing's r different now!! I am 61 year's old and have had purple and pink hair for over 20 year's and I don't intend to change it ever!! It's me!! Everyone knows it's who i am and they love it too.
How is Robin 36 with two adult children and yet she is “conservative”?
I find it hard to believe she's 36 there. I would have guessed late 40s/early 50s. Same with the dad.
90s fashion made people look older than they really were
@@ade2487cuz conservatives get married and have kids young
Ricki Lake was a pretty rad, badass leather-clad greaser chick in Crybaby! 😀
27:53 “what do you mean *let* me wear something?” 😆👏
Im 35 with kids and started wearing grunge looks after 30. I always had colored hair streaks since high school and edgy styles but never went full on because I conformed. This is sad to watch the opinions but beautiful in the way the goth guests explain themselves ❤.
The mohawk guy looks so Hot! I love mohawks.
The 1st moms 80’s poison hair was not in in the 90’s tho…
IMO, Alan Jr. looks a lot like Marilyn Manson.
Is the second mom tweakin out or am I just stoned? 😆
This episode was from 1996. 1996 was a good year for animals and wildlife in my book.
It's those parents that need to check on themselves!! The first girl is well educated and not promiscuous. The mom needs to get real with it!! It's a form of expression!! For goodness, the mom has long fake names!!
Iconic episode! ❤❤❤
Giana was really beautiful. I hope she is still alive and well.
25:33 her mom is like the norm now. I proudly have no tattoos.
35:11 was cute
17:28 Name of the song?
I guess it's Wrapped in plastic by Marilyn Manson.
Fashion episodes were my fav! 😊
Lmao Im more conservative??!!! YOU WERE IN A JOHN WATERS MOVIE!!!
That woman who claimed that she's a mom, looking like that is a huge joke!!! She is an embarrement to all who see her. I feel so sorry for her daughter.
I think she's hot 🔥
these kids are wearing what high fashion brands are presenting on runwaysnow in 2024. they were far advanced for the time they were living in.
The mom showing her belly and tatted up is basically gen z 😬
Ricki lake came out 93. I was 15 and I’m now 47! The difference with the kids back then and even in their rebellion stage they were well mannered, well spoken for the most part, didn’t cuss or disrespect their parents. So much has changed the way kids speak and treat their parents. And the leather wearing mom must have done something right because her daughter is everything I mentioned above. She’s beautifully dressed, well spoken, and well mannered. She never put her mother down, cussed or called names, just expressed how her mother’s appearance makes her feel.
La introduccion pasando a los chicos alternativos con musica de circo de fondo 💀 dios mio
Is this like the opposite of that “Hey Punk! Lose the Funk!” show
They look totally normal, everyday kids of nowadays 😂💜🖤
Coffee shops are bad?
That's BOGUS man!! Ease up off the kid!
39:28 based
Robin is 36 and looks 50. She was 17 when she had her kid. Teen preggo and looking old that young, means Robin partied. I wonder if she knows the dad. Haha. What bothers me is that this is in the 90s. I'd jump on Giana's OF instantly.
Just started but Miquie is adorable
09:34 can you see me running, running, running for my life
can you see the witch can’t you see the witch can’t you see the witch by my side!
Rosetta Stone!!!! Awesome band and song. Being alternative isn’t always a “phase”. At 51 years old I’m still enjoying my goth life, going to concerts, and the occasional club event. 🤘🏾😻
Miquie doesn't look that bad. Her shorts could be a little longer and she's destroying her hair. However, she isn't that bad compared to the others. She's a lovely girl
That lad is pretty cool, his dad is a bit of a prick though. Nobody asked him a fair enough question to warrant the intelligent response that he's clearly more than capable of giving. He's got his lunchbox and he's armed real well
3:24 As a mom i love my girls UNCONDITIONALLY i don't have to like everything they do.2024 and i have 5 small piercings in my face and im a mom i have 5 tattoos and im getting more but i can get a job with the way i look. 19:12 Id never make fun of my child no matter what! Hes a child and clearly going through phases and trying to find himself , hes 15! He needs support !! His sexually shouldn't concern his dad! 31:10 She cant tell anyone else how the can dress.shes only upset cuz everyone else cant mind their own bussiness 40:18 The chick in the audience had some nerve talking about women who have had childrens body.
Marilyn Manson was coming out at the time
Yes, there were are a lot of kids in my city that dressed like that back then.
Adults attacking kids for the way the look or God forbid! They might be gay! I'm glad when I was young back then I was lucky I could and still do wear alternative clothes without getting a hard time form my family and it was more unusual here in Ireland very judgemental adults who should know better
2:22 the only real mf there
