Each episode will focus on the life and times of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, who was the founder of the Sikh Empire in Punjab. The series explores his military campaigns, his economic and educational policies, his relationships with his wives and family members, as well as the political and social landscape of Punjab during the 19th century.
But we will start from the ancient history of Punjab; discuss Punjab before Maharaja Ranjit Singh, highlighting the dynasties, empires and the Muslim invaders during that period. Punjab before Maharaja Ranjit Singh was a region with a long and rich history, having been inhabited by various civilizations over the centuries. The region was known for its fertile land and strategic location, which made it a center of trade and commerce. One of the earliest civilizations to settle in the Punjab region was the Harappans, who built a sophisticated urban culture in the Indus Valley around 2600 BCE.
The region also saw the rise and fall of various empires, including the Mauryan Empire, the Gupta Empire, and the Mughal Empire. In the early medieval period, the Punjab region was ruled by various dynasties, including the Rajputs, the Ghaznavids, and the Ghurids. The region also saw the rise of the Sikh religion in the 15th century, which was founded by Guru Nanak and later led by nine successive Gurus. By the 18th century, the Punjab region had become fragmented and was ruled by various small kingdoms and principalities. It was during this time that Maharaja Ranjit Singh emerged as a powerful ruler and united the region under his leadership, establishing the Sikh Empire in 1799.

The history is muddled with contradictions. Why did Guru Hargobind become "friends" with Jahangir and Shah Jahan? Why are Gurus depicted in Mughal garb and doing their sports or activities? Me thinks, as leaders they interacted with elites of the time and cultural adopting and crossing. You have religious nuts, rulers and rebels working the system. This is what happens when politics and religions combine - nothing new.
