  • It's time to put Bonsai techniques into action! In this movie Morten Albek (teacher of the Shohin Bonsai Course) explains the steps of styling a Juniper Bonsai.
    For more free lectures:
    www.bonsaiempire.com/courses/...
Morten talks about analyzing the raw material, cleaning the tree, selecting branches to work with and plan for the future. This 'demonstration' is not about speed, but all about optimizing results in the long run!
    Topics discussed in this movie:
    - Analyzing the material
    - Styling pre-trained material
    - Cleaning up and finding the “bones”
    - Design and thought processes
    - Plan for the future

    Good explanation of the procedure.
I also 100% agree w the sentiment of picking out non-standard material. The pursuit of bonsai is in learning how to style.

17:00 finally starts working on tree!
17:53 makes first snip with scissors.
    Just so you know.
The rest is a 15 min history of how nobody wanted that little tree, it’s a good little tree, nobody took care of the little tree, it’s hard to tell exactly what type of cedar the little tree is, he’s gonna put the little tree in the middle of a display, and it’s a good little tree.

Can you Bonsai or Niwaki(Japanese styled garden tree) a ‘Green Sea’ Juniper??
I have two +25 year old Sea Green junipers in my backyard (I just branch selected, pruned, styled and started training them only this past summer). I also planted about 25 cuttings from it.
    Are these even Bonsai’able?
I’ve noticed right away when I started working on it (and have also read on the internet), they are not really ideal for bonsai because - their trunks/branches are too super straight and long, leggy and also the foliage is too pointy and feather shaped.
    Your opinion please?
    Any help greatly appreciated!

I love the video. Just disagree with one thing he said. He said you can’t thicken a tree when it’s in a pot. Which is false. I have myself and know plenty of people that have started a seeding in a pot and have kept it in a pot it’s entire life and have gotten extremely thick trunks and bases. With hat being said this is a great video

Being the one who said it, I will like to clarify. Making use of sacrifice branches to force thickening, and at the same time using a bigger pot for expanded root growth, added a good feeding programme, it is of course possible to expand the trunk thickness. With time.
My comment is aimed at the many enthusiasts that are growing bonsai from seeds or very small cuttings in the pot they expect the tree to stay in. Expecting these trees to mature as old big bonsai within a few years. That's not gonna happen. That's why I point at getting more mature material to start with. To save beginners from going down a long road, and most likely giving up bonsai at the first corner. There always are exceptions. :-) Kind regards, Morten Albek.

Shohin-Bonsai Europe well I agree with you. As I said it was a great video. I love your work. I usually put my young seedlings in huge training pots and ofcourse use sacrificial branches, let the tree grow wild, and heavy feeding. I can usually get quite a thick trunk in ten years time. I do plant some In the ground when looking for a much faster result. Though I must say some of my best bonsai I have trained in a pot there entire life. I feel I have much more control over the root base when I do so. I don’t really specialize in shohin size bonsai which is why I signed up for the course and watched your video. It’s something I’m trying to better my skill set in. Being able to truly miniaturize a tree to such a small size and make it look ancient amazes me. Question for you if you don’t mind-if you have ever grown a tree in the ground. After you chop the trunk to shorten the tree to a desired height, in your case, shohin size, how do you begin building the apex?

    • @ShohinbonsaiEurope
      @ShohinbonsaiEurope 5 років тому +3

@@chriswillette8743 Hi Chris. It also depends on the climate where you grow trees. Here it grows too slowly if not pre-grown in the ground or larger containers. I have grown some in the ground for a few years, and then continued in larger pots. Reducing root amount over time when repotting. The question about building the apex is a big one because it depends on specimens and the stage they are at. Generalizing here. I grow new branches from scratch (more or less) from a bare trunk. Using sacrifice branches to thicken up parts of the branches. Cutting back after some growth, (leaving the sacrifice branches to grow) and this way continuously building up the branch structure. little by little. Always cutting the trunk back so there is room left to grow a canopy not exceeding the 20 cm height of the Shohin category. A few case stories avaliable at shohin-europe.com/case-stories/

basic question but how often do you water a juniper bonsai. I seem to not find the right amount of light and water for them. Do they like to stay moist?

my sister has had a juniper bonsai for around a year and a half and told me that it’s struggling a bit since i have a lot of indoor plants. She asked me to try to take care of it and nurse it back to health but honestly I’m not sure how. I’m a beginner with plants and only have one other bonsai- the Ficus. Her tree is very small and sits in front of her window so it receives as much sunlight as if it were outside. I noticed a crunchy, hollow, shell-like thing attached that i pulled off. The ends of the branches are green but the inner areas connected to the trunk are dying and brown. I think it may have root rot and I’ve researched what to do but I thought I may as well ask :)

I didn't know where else to go. My little one got sick and I forgot to water my 2 year old Juniper bonsai tree. It is now dry and brittle mostly at the top of the tree, will watering and misting it help over time? Also, when I got it, the roots were and are in a ball shape on one side of the tree, is there a way to even them out without doing any harm to the tree?

Mid summer to early autumn. During winter trees grow slower and during spring growth is explosive. Working on it after its growth season helps you make a better decision, given that the tree will most likely stay that way until spring.

Before any of you start commenting stupid things like this is “torturing the tree” well it’s not. Torture is different, if this were torture. It would be killing the tree. But that’s not why we do bonsai right? People who do bonsai care about trees a lot. People who don’t do
bonsai don’t care about trees as much as we do trust me.

Your to bonsai what eminem is to rap music. In the genre of the bonsai Super elite the Japanese rule the game. But when it comes to shohin your probably the most respected. The bonsai mount Rushmore is kimura, kobayashi and albek. I don't want to disparage anyone there are alot of great bonsai artists but when it comes to shohin, name someone better than albek.
