Directed by: Christopher Dillon Quinn
Starring: Natalie Portman
How much do you know about the food that’s on your plate? Based on the bestselling book by Jonathan Safran Foer and narrated by co-producer Natalie Portman, Eating Animals is an urgent, eye-opening look at the environmental, economic, and public health consequences of factory farming. Tracing the history of food production in the United States, the film charts how farming has gone from local and sustainable to a corporate Frankenstein monster that offers cheap eggs, meat, and dairy at a steep cost: the exploitation of animals; the risky use of antibiotics and hormones; and the pollution of our air, soil, and water. Spotlighting farmers who have pushed backed against industrial agriculture with more humane practices, Eating Animals offers attainable, commonsense solutions to a growing crisis while making the case that ethical farming is not only an animal rights issue but one that affects every aspect of our lives.

This documentary would need to be available free of charge for everyone. If not, only people invested in the cause will see it.
Buddhist Vegetarian here, from India. My dad never tasted meat, he is now 87 and healthier and well than most 70 yrs old. Hope I can cross 100 mark with more knowledge about diet n exercise.
right on man! i have a balanced diet and love chicken here from america. love god and very naturalistic. my grandma grew up on transfat and we all good and eat meat. shes 96 and grandfather 90. they speak like they are 30s.
It’s wrong to kill any animal including fish.
Yeah, Indian food is healthy already. Don't let Western media convince you that you need to eat meat and dairy to be like rich Europeans. Really affluent people go vegan and practice Yoga to stay healthy.
@@paladino3732 lol anecdotal experience isn't evidence. Stars show most people who eat like you die early
@Feezie F-Baby it's wrong if it's for food when you have other food options. If there are other options, it's unnecessary and unnecessary killing is cruel. I understand if you belong to a sub Saharan African tribe that meat is your only option, but 99% of us can eat other food
Thank you Natalie and Hot Ones for letting me know what's going on.
Ha came straight from there too!
Just came from there too!
such a great way to get through to people who have yet to stumble upon the information provided within
One night in 2016 I was staying at a friend's place with my girlfriend and I couldn't sleep. Saw the book on a book shelf and read it through the night. Have been vegetarian since.
I wish there was a way to write thank you letters to these whistleblowers without invading their privacy or opening them up to hate mail. They and their families have been though so much. Nothing compared to what the animals they've watched over have, but at least they used their voices for them rather than stay silent.
Of course supporting foundations linked to them and going vegan is the simple answer but they deserve personal gratitude for their sacrifices.
Vegans aren't perfect. That's why we need documentaries like this to remind us what's important.
I'm thankful for this documentary.
There is no humane way to kill a sentient being that wants to live.
so what's stopping you not to kill or eat killed things ?
I don't, but I'm kind of heart broken that this movie seems to be suggesting that the solution to factory farming is just to eat animals that were tortured a little less.
just think about animals as something that doesn't care about you and never will.
I'm not trying to be scary here, but if you imagine that you're hit by car, would some nearby cow, rabbit or pig come to help you? They will not even look at you. On the other side majority of humans will certainly help you.
I don't filter reality through my ego. It's immoral to cause unnecessary suffering, period.
Thanks for being honest. If I may notice, you only want people to listen to your opinion. It's a bit close minded way, but let it be if it makes you happy.
Currently on Hulu. This is NOT a vegetarian/vegan film. It touches briefly on it and a few interviews should have one thinking about it. This is a good STARTER for someone to move in that direction.
I loved that book, so glad to see they’re making a documentary from it!!
a necessary documentary for our age, thank you for this
The feeling that u have without eating meat anymore I swear to you ,you can’t compare
I watched this documentary and cried for almost 4 hours still so upset I know all this but the pain of watching it again is buried so deep I don’t know 🤷♀️ what to do with these feelings, I don’t want to judge anyone and how they live their life that is totally up to them, but it still hurts to see these poor innocent creatures in such pain just for our own greedy purposes! May Great Spirit show us all the path to save ourselves ❤️🙏🏼🥰
not vegan/vegetarian but i'm excited to watch this
thank you natalie portman, who has been my idol since i can think, and everyone who helped producing this documentary. reading eating animals and watching movies like what the health or documentaries have made ne go vegan and i never want to change that ever again.
I'm glad this is playing at a local theater, I fell of the wagon and need something visual to get me back on track since that's what motivated me the first time...
That last statement from the "traditional" turkey farmer is eerily ironic, "I'm fighting to keep something alive."
I just finished the movie and I thought the exact same thing.
Carnism has to be stopped. For the sake of the planet. Many thanks, Natalie.
I'ts like forcing a lion to eat potato
lmfao, "Carnism has to be stopped" says the person with a wolf as their profile pic. Eating meat isn't an ideology, it's something that's present in nearly every human culture. I sure hope you don't eat any industrially grown vegetables or grains btw, that's not exactly going to help save the planet.
Josh Young actually, yes it is.
caveman Versace actually, quiet vegans are the most abundant kind, for obvious reasons. That is true for any “group” of any kind as well. You only hear the outspoken.
WHO'S GONNA STOP IT? YOU RETARDS? *LMAOROF!!!!*
Looks very similar to Food, Inc. - which changed my life when it came out 10 years ago, and what inspired me to become a vegetarian. Go see it. Like this movie, it will open your eyes to how devastating our industrial food system has become. Ignorance is not bliss. This is so important.
i was in New Zealand for my honeymoon and shocked at so much livestock on beautiful countrysides grazing and eating grass outdoors the way they're supposed to. I do A LOT of driving for work in the U.S. middle of nowhere country sides, and very rarely see as much as I did in New Zealand. In the U.S, the few livestock to graze on land are for tax benefits, most everything else is factory farmed. In New Zealand, they have so much pride in their meat too. I also think they have the best burgers in the world (Fergburger Queenstown.. WOW!!). What a shame.
I read the book.. but there's no way I can get through this film, let alone the trailer. 30 seconds of this type of footage when i was a pre-teen was enough to make me vegetarian for the rest of my life. This doc is based on the Jonathan Safran-Foer book, right?
Where can I watch this online?
What states will this be playing in? I live in Houston,TX and could not find any dates for the film!!
Will the documentary be available on iTunes?
What about the psychology of fish, could use a documentary
I have been filming independant farmers and ranchers. Their values and what they choose to include in the growth of their animals matters too. In fact, they begin what these factors finish most of the time. Farmers too, have to be accountable. It's all about accountability. Lets not hope for change, lets make change.
I love meat
I like meat too,@@mricecream5194. Grew up on a dairy farm.
They did important and good film BUT it's impossible to watch it anywhere! Great job!

Animals are living beings, no food. The animals feel, like humans joy and pain, happiness and unhappiness.
As long as people think that animals do not feel, animals feel that humans do not think.
Animals are delicious I hate plants yack
We need more operations like Alderspring Ranch.

Money is the driver of the market. If they could make plant based "meats" more affordable, I'm all for it. I've tried the "Impossible" burger (Fatburger's variety), and I like it... it's good. But that options is 55% higher in cost to what it is based on. If they can get taste, available, and cost to a level on par with traditional meat offerings, that would make it easier for the public to change. Now, it's pretty much a luxury to be vegan for most... a luxury many cannot afford or are willing to pay for.
I agree being vegan is a privilege only 1st world people who do. cause they don't have the struggle for food
I know this is an old comment, but I agree that the specialty products come with specialty price tags. If you're trying to continue eating plant based versions of meat/dairy/eggs, you'll be forking over a pretty penny.
But eating vegan is not inherently expensive at all. I feed my family of 4 for $100/week, and we live in an expensive area (20 minutes outside a major city.) I just cook most of our meals, and plan what to make in advance. Takes about 30 minutes of my time. Once you form the habit, it's very doable :)
Feels so sad to see such cruelty towards the animals in corporate farming. I never felt bad for being a non-veg but also me and my family we always practiced having our diet of at least 3 days a week full vegan.
We Muslims are all mostly non-veg but I really appreciate those people who doesn't make meat and dairy their regular routine and go vegan diet for at least 2 days a week. As Natalie Portman said "You don't have to go vegan suddenly after having the diet of non veg for so long, but changing only 1 day a week fully vegan will do a massive change"
Where can we see this movie???
I just watched this doc and my heart hurts!! Where has our empathy and humanity gone. I will never again, in my life, eat animals or animal by products. Ever!!!

thank so much
There are many lessons to be learned from how everyone was persuaded.
I didn't found one theater within 50miles around me that diffuse this movie...
Opting to eat less inhumanely treated animals is NOT the solution. It isn't merely the matter of factory farming that is the problem, it's animal agriculture in general. What we need to do if we want to be decent people is to treat our fellow sentient species with the respect and compassion that they deserve.
All of the nutrients we need in order to thrive can be obtained more healthfully, humanely, and environmentally responsibly from plant sources. Needlessly harming animals for food or anything else is animal abuse and is morally unjustifiable. The solution is veganism. It's easier, better, and more compelling than ever, for our own sake and everyone else's.
I could not agree more.
Yes. We do not need to eat animals in order to live healthy lives.
Elaine Hughes what about anemia? We get iron from animals too. I find it easier to eat meat because it's delicious and I don't have to worry about many health concerns.
Thank you for asking, Smrlord. "Dried beans and dark green leafy vegetables are especially good sources of iron, even better on a per calorie basis than meat. Iron absorption is increased markedly by eating foods containing vitamin C along with foods containing iron. Vegetarians do not have a higher incidence of iron deficiency than do meat eaters."
www.vrg.org/nutrition/iron.php
There is a bounty of delicious, animal-free food that can help us avoid health problems. Per the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, "the United States' largest organization of food and nutrition professionals": Well-planned vegan diets "are appropriate, and they satisfy the nutrient needs and promote normal growth at all stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy and lactation, infancy, childhood, adolescence, older adulthood, and for athletes...Vegetarians and vegans are at reduced risk of certain health conditions, including ischemic heart disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, certain types of cancer, and obesity. Low intake of saturated fat and high intakes of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, soy products, nuts, and seeds (all rich in fiber and phytochemicals) are characteristics of vegetarian and vegan diets that produce lower total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and better serum glucose control. These factors contribute to reduction of chronic disease.”

Must-see film!
libro illuminante!
How different is the movie from the book?
why can't we see this film for free on Facebook or you tube. This is such an important issue as you and I understand. And of course I also understand the producers need to make some earnings. So? if that's the problem, let us know.. but why on earth is such an eye opening production not made available in a better way?
The last words in the trailer: "This is my mission, fighting to keep something alive." What is that, exactly? Human exceptionalism? If wisdom pointed at the evidence that animal husbandry is obsolete, would we "fight to keep it alive?" I think that energy is better spent teaching farmers how to future-proof themselves with plant-based production, forest permaculture or some other non-food purpose. Farmers are businessmen, not quaint cultural relics, and the meat industry is built upon an artificial economy (#Meatonomics) that, should the political winds shift and the supports for the industry be pulled, we all will be wondering why nobody saw it coming. There has been NO GOOD NEWS for meat, dairy, and eggs, not for a long time; ignore the nutritional, environmental and ethical movements at your peril.
It’s against FEDERAL law meaning the FDA. MEANING this is not about big corporations being monsters. It’s about government regulations tying the hands of corporations. Regardless- vote with your dollar, vote with your fork.
The shift needs to be to end all animal farming, small and large. Our most healthful and humane sources of protein are all plant derived. If it takes products like Beyond Meat and Impossible Burger to be a part of this change, then bring it on!! New products and education are the key to creating a massive shift away from animal farming, to a more compassionate and healthy planet. We need to "cut out the middle man", the billions of yearly slaughtered animals, and get our nutritional resources directly from the earth. Hopefully, this documentary can be a part of this change. Thanks to Natalie Portman and all the others that have brought this film to, hopefully, a mainstream audience, and hoping that this is not just another "breaching to the choir." (I've seen some interviews about this movie and the hosts still don't seem to get it.)
they need to hurry up and start growing exact meat substitutes in labs. then and only then this entire industry will die.
CGagnon5 What an awful thought. Just another way to. Load our bodies with chemicals :-(
I don't think there are that many people who are willing to switch to lab meat who aren't also willing to switch to faux meat, or just beans or whatever.
Alignn .... literally millions (possibly billions) of people feel that way. I am never giving up meet until an exact meat substitute can be grown in a lab. I will never give up meet for plant based meat or beans. I need an exact meet substitute
caveman, wtf are you talking about? what does religion have to do with this?
That's the thing though, it'll never be an exact substitute. Even if by all measurable standards it tastes the same, people will feel a difference with lab meat, like how people will say "I knew it tasted funny" after finding out a meal was vegan even if they thought it was great before finding out.
It's not that there are zero people who'll switch, but most people will find an excuse. It's too expensive, it doesn't taste right, it just isn't natural... there's something comforting about eating what you've always eaten, so you're not just asking people to give up the taste but also that feeling of familiarity.
Hungry after watching this
What I believe is right currently is eating only 60 percent of the meat that you take from an animal. On my hands are marks that give me that answer. For plant life it is 40 percent. For processed food it is 20 percent. I am a person that struggles with mental health issues. I have been unsure of myself for years. Also even when you cook you need to maybe keep 5 percent on your own land instead of sending it to the city garbage fields.
great video , i have not eaten animal products for many months because i hate animal abuse.
Is this a good movie? worth watching in the cinema?
if you want to learn how to have a food industry that is sustainable and good. then you should check out Sweden's.
My sisters girlfriend from church is vegan and her kids as well . the kids look skinny, pale ,weak and sick i always feel bad for them.
We need to know where are food comes from.
Its sad the Government dont do something about it
Animals lives do matter and veganism is the future 😍🐷🐮
Food chain is part of the nature. The only problem is overpopulation has caused sustainability and disrupted the balance of the ecosystem.
No
@Daniel Boyd ahem....animal farming IS whats destroying earth's air, land and water resources .
@Miles Hamblen Plants don't have a brain nor a central nervous system. California wild fires ? Have you seen any trees run away ? No, they just sit there and burn because they don't feel nothing.
@Daniel Boyd It is realistic because we have the anatomy of Herbivores.
I love eating eggs and chicken to this movies
It was my understanding of how our government suppressed the truth about nutrition and food that educated me about our need for campaign finance reform, and end to citizen's united, and a change in our we receive news. Watching this is a step in saving our democracy. I am not a vegan but I put that aside and see what industries are doing to our democracy. It isn't too late to decide to stop being part of the problem, and it starts with what your money gets spent on and whether you pay attention to the corporate sponsors of the next election. Follow the money trail.
how do this happen
Wha the heck does Natalie Portman have to cooralate in all of this? Nonetheless, anxious to see
Queen Natalie can you release these in cinemas in the UK or on Netflix eventually
Sympathy is a trait that many animal species have. They sympathise with other animals of their species and help them. In humans this sympathy reaches further than their own species as can be seen by the taming of dogs, cats and livestock for a mutual benefit thus we have developed sympathy for animals. We call this being humane. What is also called being humane is preventing harm to anything that feels pain. When it comes to mass production of animal products compared to traditional farming methods, loving the animal doesn't matter. The only difference between more and less humanely treated animals is how you feel about it yourselves. Both farming methods have perks but banning humans from eating meat is like banning intercourse, eating meat is natural and it needs to happen.
So... Food Inc. 2?
Makes me hungry
Yeah.. this is the right move.. I hope more and more people gets aware of the cruelties behind the meat industry. Go vegetarian! thats the more humane thing you can do
Been Vegan for 20 years, which is longer than the 5 yrs this documentary has been out. So if I'm still alive & can see this again every 5yrs 4 times for 20 yrs, then veganism must be the way to live.
I understand how many people do want everyone to be vegan but this is a start at least- ethically farming. Of course it would be great if everyone went vegan but it is not going to happen overnight and especially here in Mexico were most people over eat meat and there isn´t a "popular/recognized" organization here to uncover the industry (or at least I havn´t heard of any). Whenever I do speak up about these issues I´ve found that people here don´t care to listen or assume they can´t or just don´t want to change their way of living. They want everything to be easy and don´t bother to see the effects that their habits cause. I would love to see a change here or at least have the peace of mind that the animals had a respectful life.
Go Vegan!
go fuck yourself
??? Because I said "Go Vegan" you chose to say that? Yikes. Social media.
Can't you just go vegan and shut the fuck up?
Bryce Tyson, sasa is triggered by veganism. Don't engage the troll.
vegans are trolling the evolution of humankind. you have not anything else to say but promoting veganism, like a badly scratched vinyl.
Watching this while having pork ribs and dog meat for dinner
Yes, it's easy to look at factory farming and the modern corporate food system and decry what's going on. However, look at what the cost to the average American would be for food if it were all left to individual small farmers. All you have to do is visit a farmer's market to confirm what I'm saying. Right now you can buy a whole roasted chicken at Jewel foods, Walmart, or Costco for $5.95. At the farmers market that same chicken raw would cost you $28.00 dollars. Tomatoes at the grocery store run fifty cents to a dollar fifty a pound depending on the season. At the farmer's market the same tomato will cost $5.00 a pound. Eggs at the grocery store run 88 cents to 1.98 a dozen. At the farmers market those same eggs run $10.00 to $15.00 a dozen. The same price difference exists for every other vegetable or fruit when bought at a grocery store versus a farmer's market. If there weren't any factory farming system many people in this country would go hungry, and at minimum would live a life less well. Ms. Portman who makes millions on every movie can afford to eat sustainable, most of the rest of us cannot.
You're right. Sustainable, ethical farming of animal products is very expensive. To be feasible, we as a culture would have to dramatically reduce our intake of these products.
In terms of fruit and vegetables, I've found that if I buy in-season it's a lot less expensive. Further, if you find a supplier that offers "ugly" produce (Imperfect Foods is one), you get the same produce and the same nutritional benefits as buying premium organic.
Farmer's markets are expensive. Many vendors will travel from rural areas to more expensive areas so they can make a premium on their products - fair enough. If you can find a local vendor, you'll almost always spend less there. Plus the food is delicious :D
@@sitcomchristian6886 All farmers at Farmer's markets are local. I've never met a farmer willing to travel more than 50 miles to sell his goods. All Farmer's markets vegetables ARE IN SEASON so anything you buy at a Farmer's market can only be seasonal. And the prices at Farmer's markets that I quoted are non-organic. Most local farmers can't afford to pay the annual price and percentage of their sales that need to be paid to have their produce certified as organic. And just what is going to be "IN SEASON" for fruits and vegetable between the months of November and May in the midwest? The answer is absolutely nothing. It's the industrial food system in the US that is keeping America fed at a reasonable cost. Sustainable local farming is an elitistist concept. It sounds wonderful in theory, but then cost reality hits most Americans in the face pretty quick. And I do buy some produce at Farmer's markets, but that's because I can afford to do so many of my neighbors cannot afford such prices. But when I was younger my parents couldn't afford Farmer's market food because there were five kids, my mother a homemaker while only my father worked. I remember well tough times when we had little to eat even at chain stores prices.
This video's making me so hungry. Thanks a lot!
Should be good. Some people especially young people don't really appreciate that the food they're having was a living animal. Like How can you explain what and how chicken nuggets are to a child?
Is it bad how I watched this trailer and an ad for McDonald's new Hamburgers came on?
When I eat meat I know that this happens and of course it doesnt make me feel good about myself that I'm eating meat that is made this way but I have loved my life eating this type of produce so in order to not feel depressed when I'm eating i just drown out the thoughts of this happening.
You've loved your life eating this type of produce, how do you know you won't love your life eating vegan produce if you don't even try it
While traditional livestock farmers at least want to care for their animals while they've alive, livestock farming as a whole (which now is of course mostly factory farming) must go at some point. Environmentally, it can't be sustained. The co2 and the methane from animals (cows especially) can only go on so long. There'll come a point where we'll need to move to renewable energies and if we continue farming 57 billion animals a year and growing every year (also note how unfeasible that would be in free-range form alone) then we'd never stop polluting the atmosphere and we'd be doomed. Veganism is the best answer, hands down. Here's info if you'd like to know more and I can assure you the whole protein thing is a myth, protein is hard not to get enough of and B12 can easily be supplement (also most Americans are B12 deficient - vegan or not, so most need to supplement) - ua-cam.com/video/OJxMsypwnqg/v-deo.html& (Beginners guide to veganism by 'Pick Up Limes')
To value the lives of animals but not vegetables is hypocritical. They are both alive.
But one experiences pain in an acute way, whereas the other doesn't. I'd rather do less harm as possible :)
The mission.
An animal's life is not worth less than a human's preference. This killing and abuse does not exist for an important, noble reason. It is not saving lives, in fact it is doing the very opposite; meat production nowadays is killing animals, killing people and killing our planet. Time for humanity to wake up, take the red pill and realize how much we've tricked ourselves in to thinking that this is somehow okay. While I think any animal dying for food it it's not for survival is wrong, I like how they have old-fashioned farmers to expose factory farming, because it makes it more relatable to most people.
Hot wings brought me here
Lol. I'm vegan but I still found that funny.
I bet they were fucking delicious.
Well, I mainly eat vegetarian, but the end result for all these animals, either huddled in a cage or in an open field is the same - killed and eaten. You want to make a difference eat less meat and poultry
