a long term review of the smallest filter in the U range by Fluval. can they cope with a huge bioload, do they filter, what goes wrong, and how to clean them all answered.
Fluval (well to be fair aquaclear) is notorious for having some pretty ridiculous impeller wear. It'll be interesting to see what the internals look like. Are there any known issues or noise from the impeller shafts deforming/wearing?
Ive found it easy enough to open the top in the tank to clean the sponge, doesnt open all the way but doesnt really need to to get the sponge out and thats all you need to do in the tank, youd remove it to clean the impeller etc. Ive found the suction cups stick to glass just fine, only problem and that is minor is that they tend to come adrift of the filter when removing it.
If nothing else a tank with that much bioload is a good test of the filter, Thanks Sharpie!!
Also shows sponge works well as biomedia, thanks for watching Mark.
I love it when you talk about flow rate
Let it flow, let it flow, like a taco bell down below...
Im looking for a silent filter. Would you recommend this fluval u1? Tha ks
Its about as "silent" as they come as long as you keep it submerged so it doesnt suck in air and blow that out.
Buying a U1 for my son’s tank at the weekend..
Useful video 👍🏽💯
Thanks for watching, if they can cope with the task i give them they can manage a sensibly stocked tank with ease.

Impellers in all my u series filters are fine, the u4 is near 5 years old now and in perfect nick.
That current seems strong tho. Still - the filter seems solid.
It needs to be a bit on the high side to deal with the sheer levels of poop a full spawn of bristlenoses produce. Thanks for watching.
The suction cups so bad and why can't you open hatch with it in tank
Easy fix at the design stage
Pain for us
