PATH 745 Arrives at the Shore Line Trolley Museum--Part 1 (of 4)

  • Following the ceremonies commemorating the transfer of Port Authority Trans-Hudson car 745 to the Shore Line Trolley Museum, comes the task of unloading the car. I Don't believe the process of delivering a newly-acquired piece of rolling stock to the Museum has been documented on video, and if such records exist, they haven't been put online in any fashion that I've run across. Here I present about 38 minutes of edited footage I shot that day following the acceptance ceremony (which itself was covered in-part by local news media).
    Hopefully these videos will become historical in some way, both for documenting the process of delivering a railcar to an isolated railway (this museum is not connected to the national rail network) and of the significance of receiving this artifact of the 9/11 attacks. Car 745, along with its counterpart 143, are the last surviving examples of the PA-1/2/3 rapid-transit car class, its workmates having been scrapped when replaced by the PA-5 class.
    Car 745 is one of two surviving cars of an seven-car train that was left in the World Trade Center station during 9/11. Dispatchers had no idea the towers would collapse, and had the train left empty in the WTC station so it would be available when the station re-opened. As we all know, that didn't happen. 745 and 143 were extracted from the rubble of the collapsed towers more than 70 feet below street level. Contrary to news reports, the cars were not in the cast-iron tunnel that penetrates the "bathtub" walls, but were merely not directly under the towers' footprint when they came down. Aside from being decontaminated, the cars are as they were found at Ground Zero, and stored in a hangar at JFK Airport for 14 years until it was determined they were too big to be displayed in the 9/11 memorial. 745 was donated to the Shore Line Trolley Museum. 143 is still in the airport hangar, supposedly awaiting a similar (though currently unknown) home.

    I've noticed that plenty of elevated and subway cars nationwide have fluted steel sides like the Budd 2200 series for the cta, the NYCTA R-45s, and the PATH pa-3's. Was this some sort of trend that was followed? Or is it only a mere coincidence?

      It's probably a little of both. There may be some structural strength improvements, but it is just as likely an aesthetic (i.e. looks "modern").

      No it the company that Built them it was their signature budd built the metro Liners Cta 2200 series 2400 series R32 and etc st. Louis signatures were aluminum steel body cars which could be painted like the R33 PA-12 and other like CTA 6000 and old 5000 series cars

    Im so hype!!!! to see it i miss the old path train!!!! so much!!! i cant i like it better than the new path train model 2011 with the blue p logo i like the old one better im so hyped!!!!!!

    Who was the builder of these PATH cars?

      PA-3's were built by Hawker-Siddely.

      They look very much like the MBTA "Blue Bells" (600 series cars), which were retired from the MBTA's Blue Line a few years ago.

    My family is pretty well known there I've actually drove the w-3 crane u just saw

      I was an operator there for more than a decade. Was rapid-transit qualified, knew how to move some of the work equipment and could handle handbrake cars. My visits declined a few years ago because my carpool dried up and I don't own a car myself (and nowadays I have to work every other Saturday).
      But I still maintain a membership there. and go up every once in awhile when I can catch a ride with someone already going there.
