  • Thank you UA-camrs and Redditor's for the great questions. After getting many submissions we broke up the questions into several Q&A videos for all our Vet Students. In this video, the Bow Tie Vet Guy answers questions regarding the different jobs and careers one can get as a veterinarian, the salary range of a veterinarian, and how to go about shadowing a vet.
    Keep the questions coming! Dr. Mike likes having the answers to your questions.

      Jordan Morales this comment breaks my heart. The cost of veterinary school (and subsequent salaries) is a real problem. I'm not sure where you are in your schooling, but the sooner you start looking for options the better. Look for grants and scholarships. Consider doing some school at less expensive community colleges. Maybe even postpone vet school while you work and save money (but be careful of this route... it's hard to go back after being out). Loans are the last option but be realistic about what you can pay back. The old adage is true. Where there's a will, there's a way. Good luck! You can do it!

      The Bow Tie Vet Guy Thank you for the support! I was living in Alaska and I'm now living in Washington right by Portland. I'm part way through my bachelors program, but ended holding off because of costs. I've been working in the industry since 2011

    Very glad I found your channel! My initial plan going into college was to apply to Vet school junior year. I now realize I'm way too behind as far as experience is concerned to make that feasible. It's disheartening to think I may have to apply at the end of senior year, or maybe even take a gap year to strengthen my application when I do apply.

    Hi Dr Mike - I am REALLY late to the piece but would like some advice - I am a final year vet student and I am being 'head hunted' if you will for a job as an exotic pet vet. There is only one clinic in New Zealand that specifically deals with exotics (GP companion animal practices will see exotics - but few and far between, making up maybe only 5-20% of their case load) and I am worried about pigeonholing myself straight out of vet school. I do have a passion for exotics - but I am worried about not developing my companion animal skills. Is it realistic to start off quite niche as a vet, but change career tracks down the path if I feel the need to?

    Hey the bow tie vet guy!, I'm working as a volunteer at a animal clinic and I told my idea to the vet about going to vet school to become either a vet or a vet tech along with the animals that I would to study which is dogs, cats, equines (example: Horses, Donkeys, and Mules), Alpacas, and Lamas and he told me that I have to go to normal college before going to vet school while trying to save up money but I'm a very timid person with anxiety even though I'm pushing myself to be more social, any advice or helpful tips I should keep in mind? And I love your videos btw, both you and your staff are so funny

    How much free time do you get as a veterinarian? I ride horses so I want to make sure I can still ride a few a day if I pursue this career. I know it’s different depending on the type of vet you are, can you go over how they are on average for large animal vs companion animal?

    What other jobs can you do that are similar to being a veterinarian? I know some but I wanna see if there's anymore that I haven't thought about since I'm going to be a sophomore in high school.

      Veterinary nurse/ veterinary technician, veterinary care assistant (VCA), nurse practitioner, inspector for welfare organisations, private practice management, farm consultancy, kennel/ cattery assistants or owners (or even exotic pet boarding facilities) ... then all the jobs that veterinarians can do as Dr Mike mentioned in the video =) in all of these jobs you are looking after animals in one way or another - but nothing is directly similar to being a veterinarian as when you are a veterinarian, you are a doctor (you can't become another 'version' of an animal doctor).

    Do you know any vets who studied Zoology after vet school? If you want to do research on animals, is it necessary to have a phD in Zoology?

    • @TheBowTieVetGuy
      @TheBowTieVetGuy  7 років тому +2

      I don't know anyone that did it afterward, but I do know a few that went to vet school and got a masters in something else at the same time (some in Public Health and one in Zoology). In your case, I'm not sure a phD is also necessary, but you may end up getting it anyway depending on the research you do. Good luck! Make the world a smarter place!!!

    I had a below 3.0 GPA in undergrad, unfortunately. Are any hopes to get in vet school out the window?

    • @casye6844
      @casye6844 5 років тому

      I understood that the minimum GPA for Vet school applications is a 2.5. That being said, I'm sure most vet schools want to see a 3-3.5+ in the GPA department. The other option, what I'm working towards now, is going back to school to complete the prerequisites for vet school. I have a bachelors in Psychology but was told all I need is to get the prerequisites and take the GRE and I'll be ready to start applying. Good luck

      Well, being a physician is similar to a veterinarian, but they don't see as many species (so not as good). In truth, there are a ton of jobs that deal with animals and require varying amounts of school. Training and animal behavior can be studied via veterinary medicine or psychology (animal cognition), and working with animals in any number of ways can be very rewarding. I'd think about what you're interested in besides animal medicine and see what kinds of jobs are out there that incorporate all those things. And if that job doesn't exist, you can make it up! Thanks for watching!
