Again another informational video. I always learn a lot. Who knew a tortilla could puff up? Who knew you could make the bread on a hot plate? Changed my life. 😋

That is so great, I never thought of a hot plate. I always use a tawa. Thanks, I could do 2 at once! Even maybe 3. In all the years I have never made Gee in 20 mins. It take me 2 hours or so very low and very slow. Oh, thanks girl, now I am craving chapatis!

A Tawa, is this a round, flat piece of metal or made of clay, then fired in a kiln for baking your chapatis, if so the tawa here in Mexico is known as a comal.

Ah, now I know the difference between a tortilla and a chapati, its the kind of flour and being made with a whole wheat flour the chapati has gotta be the healthier one to eat, as for putting butter on the tortilla, many mexican-americans put the butter on the tortilla like their american counterparts do with bread. As for corn tortillas, have you tried them Urvashi Ji? They also puff up like the chapatis and this flour tortilla you demonstrated with. Looking forward eagerly for the How to eat a chapati with your hands, hehehe....with our corn tortillas we tear pieces off, turn them into a sort of 3-d triangle, and with these we scoop the food up, mostly beans. Eating with your hands is so COOL, so then only in Southern India it is the custom to do so? Thumbs up, hoping ya guys are having a great covid-19 isolation day and sending your husband and you greetings from Mexico. :)

I agree with you about Indian weddings being just spectacular! Just by chance we were in Bangalore when our hostess was invited to a wedding and she took me. I will never forget that meal and all the beautiful saris and decorations and beautiful bride and groom. I think we had chapatis almost every day for 4 months. Thanks for sharing this recipes.

Another flavor difference between roti and tortillas is tortillas are made with lard where roti is made with a bit of vegetable oil if even that (depending on how traditional the family is 😏).
I am just your regular ol' run of the mill American crazy lady who went to live in Gujarat India for 6 months to learn everything I could about a culture so different than my own. I love to cook and was fascinated by what food was made and how it was made. Not only did I find some new favorite foods but I also found out how much healthier Indian food is for me personally. You may laugh but when I first came back and tried to make roti here with our whole wheat flour it completely flopped and I worried it was because of my technique (partially true no doubt). I ended up looking online to buy atta and it worked so much better. After that it was just a matter of making peace with having to learn how to make roti on a glass top stove (wire racks are now involved). 😏
You don't put a cloth in the bottom of your warmer to keep the roti from getting soggy from the steam? I just use a paper towel and throw it away later.
By the way, I really love watching you because your frame of mind is far more compatible with mine and you answer the questions I always had that made my Indian friends stare at me like I'd grown a second head in front of their eyes. 😂

Lol! No second heads just curiosity, right?

@@Twosleevers Tons of curiosity! ....which only made them think I was even weirder. 😂
Once I was peckish between meals and wanted to grab something to eat but not hang around (typical American) so I grabbed a leftover roti and filled it with whatever vegetable was there (probably aloo gobi) and rolled it up like a burrito. I knew that was NOT how it was done but I also knew how handy a burrito is when on the go so I thought I could sneak it by. But Usha, the lady of the house, saw it and I just about made her day. She laughed and laughed and told everyone about it. It was pretty funny though.
Speaking of which, I know how I'm supposed to eat my food with roti, but I am so looking forward to any tips you have. I have done it so many times but I still feel like I'm about to lose control of my food halfway between my plate and my mouth....yeah, clothes have been stained. 😒 Speaking of which, what is your advice on getting tumeric stains out of clothes? 😖😂
