    This channel has given me such a new appreciation for the people behind the scenes that make shows work. I saw Motionless in White and Knocked Loose last week, and during MIW's set the strap broke on the guitarist's guitar. A dude in black ran to him from the side and replaced the strap while the guitarist did his best to keep playing. It took less than a minute. Road crews are the unsung heroes of the music business!

      Not a fan of knocked loose but I saw them at the moda center a few days ago. I went to see after the burial, but they hit the stage super early so i missed them and ended up watching them, the band was good, the singer is just not my thing. But a good show by those guys none the less.
      But I bailed after that. Not a big deal considering I’ve seen ATB. Like the last 6 times they’ve come to Portland.

    As much as I'm mostly into tech death and extreme metal these days, I'll always have a soft spot for my nu-metal roots and Disturbed (with Mudvayne/Spineshank/Nothingface) was the first show I ever went to back in 2002.
    Over the decades they've been one of the few bands that have been consistently true to themselves, their fans and their music. Still releasing bangers that are catchy AF.
    Saw them for the first time in 21 years with Jinjer and the production was crazy. The way they conduct themselves and their shows, you can just tell they're seasoned veterans in the game.

    Addendum: I also wanted to mention that with lower average ticket prices will almost always draw bigger crowds, as more people can afford to spend their hard earned dollars. Quantity is a quality all its own.

    Touring is the engine that drives sales to all other aspects of a band’s business.
    The excitement for a band is rekindled when they tour and they end up selling more merchandise, albums, DVD’s, Booking more shows, TV appearances, sponsorships and god knows what else.
    It’s a bit more complex than just what they earn on tour because it has a cascading effect on other aspects of their business.

      @@TankTheTechThis is the part that bothers me too. I know a lot of bands that saw misleading headlines and thought they would be able to make a good living based off of those headlines. When the money wasn’t what they thought it should have been, it would lead to frustrations between the band members.
      Most of the bands ended up falling apart and the musicians didn’t have the same drive anymore. I really appreciate everything you put out. I’ve been playing the drums for 30 years, and you’ve educated me on a lot of gear over the past three years.

    The R part of the equation (R -C=P) is almost always a more fun and/or positive number publish than the C, especially in these kinds of cases. It really provides that shock any manager/agent wants to have for their client. This "sticker shock" is also at play in a lot of reporting on contracts NFL players negotiate. It is a way get more recognition on the band/player and help future earnings. Reporting low numbers, even if they are closer to what real number is, just makes everyone wonder what is wrong and effect future earnings.

    My best friend & I went to the St. Louis show, they were ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE! Literally the best time of my life! Initially when buying my tickets I was really focused on Jinjer case they're my favorite band of all time & I missed them in St. Louis last year & was heartbroken. My best friend has always been obsessed with Breaking Benjamin, so we were really going for those 2 bands. We LOVE Disturbed & we knew they put on a good show but didn't expect to love it as much as I did. I agree, they're more hard rock & I personally lean more towards the actual metal subgenres but they were way better than I expected! Their energy was amazing. It was one of those nights at a concert when you just realize how amazing it is to be alive, to be surrounded by people that GET IT. We're all here for the same thing, it was an absolutely beautiful night. I teared up typing this! Something about experiencing bands like those 3 all in 1 night with my best friend for my first metal/rock show surrounded by a community of people just like us was incredible. All 3 bands exceeded my expectations. I plan to see all of them again someday. People really need to get into Jinjer more, I need them to get the recognition they deserve. I adore your videos on them. Keep up the good work.

    I am 100% late to this video BUT am going to comment anyways, because I just found you today and have binge watched your videos. 😂 I just went to Disturbed’s tour in Knoxville, TN (I may get hate for this but only went to see falling in reverse). I listened to red and skillet in middle school/high school and never saw those bands outside of a “Christian concert” setting. I have changed A LOT since then. After binge watching your other videos I should have been expecting a mosh pit since I was in the pit. I being 28 and never being into heavy metal in any capacity was surprised disturbed was the headliner and not falling in reverse. This could be my own ignorance just like I was surprised to see how little bands actually make for each venue. I am obsessed with falling in reverse and paid almost $500 for two tickets just to see them (because there was more than one band) and expecting them to make much more than that. I’m legitimately shocked.

    Even before you shave anything off for production and expenses, it's still not as much as many people think when you take into account the number of ways it has to be divided and the amount of time it has to be amortized over. Not saying I still wouldn't love to make that amount of money, but it's not like shaking an infinite money tree.

    My bro and I went to the NC show. We were outside in our car for 5 hours in 95F heat, before they canceled the show from the power going out at the venue. There was a storm around the original gate opening time, that everyone knew would hit that night. The show was postponed. Total bummer, especially since we didn’t get that word until 9:15p.
    Disturbed came again later, but without Breaking Benjamin and Jinjer. It totally lost its luster with the loss of the opening bands. I’ve seen Disturbed multiple times and they rock. But we couldn’t even make this new time. We tried to sell the tickets for a fraction of the cost, and nobody was interested. It totally sucked.

    They are different but easy to confuse for each other so calling something hardstyle isnt really all that incorrect

    Expenses are above and beyond. I knew a "name" back in the mid-80's and was sitting down with him talking over a beer. His album had just gone platinum and when I expressed my joy he kunda shrugged. When I asked how he could shrug over a platinum album at $1 each. He went through the math and showed how he would probably end up with $5k in his pocket.
    He then explained how there were 50 people per band member to make the show and they all got a paycheck before he made a dime.
    Joe Elliot from Def Lep did an interview stating on their first tour, the roadies made more than them and they would borrow money from the crew to grab a burger some days.
    As Russell Hammond said:
    "RICH? I don't think so."

Which is why I went the private chef/catering route which has significantly lower overhead :) Love your content Tank!!!! You are great human and I have mad respect for you brother!! 40% is not the profit. In the restaurant world that is what is left after you bought the ingredients. Someone still has to prep it, cook it, serve it, wash the dishes and so on. The dozen or so drivers alone is close to 10k day in wages, hotel, food. You also have 3 other bands and 30 to 50 crew coming out that 40%.

    • @Shishawunder
      @Shishawunder 7 місяців тому

      @@manager4409 it's way less then 2 million if i got it right. When they get a cut of 240k of 600k at each venue, and still have to pay for their production, they end up with like 40k before taxes. So it's more like 200 or 300k $ per band member, so more like 1 million dollar for the whole band in total.
      But i have to admit, they are to cheap compared to other bands. In europe we pay for international known metal/rock acts around 100$, sometimes 150 or 200$ for a ticket and they toured with big bands for 50 bucks... gerat fanservice, but i hope they got enough money out of this and are not frustrated.

    Not going to name, but the worst place we worked with took 30%of our gross sales after we paid for labor, product, and packaging. They calculated it by counting the number of containers used, so we had to count in and out they'd do math and say you owed us $xxx.
    Venue industry takes crazy amounts of the top of that gross ticket sales.

I am an IT Architect working mostly from Home Office - so there really isn't much overhead in terms of expenses from my hourly rate. But even on that taxes, insurance etc. has to be deducted to get to my disposable income. As long as all of this is just talking points for fans arguing whether they should pay for music, pay fo authentic merch etc. I feel that's harmless as none of these discussions ever changed anyones mind. But I have seen instances where people are selling freelance / gig economy jobs based on lack of understanding of these things ...

    Their pyro bill alone must be insane. I know what the pyro bill was on the Godsmacks 2018 tour and it was far more than sound or lighting alone. Disturbed looks like they have more that twice the pots and burn time than the comparable I have and I'm quite sure the prices haven't gone down in that time. Disturbed probably earned as a whole for each member, made probably close to 200,000.00 to 300,000.00 for the whole tour. Taylor swift out of her whole billion dollar tour probably only walked away with 150 million to maybe 175 in her pocket from the whole tour. Most bands only get 20% of the gross after all is said and done, and everything and everyone is paid. The music industry is really set up on you only making 20% of your earnings. Even the best record deal out there from the majors is only at 22% of your gross earnings.

When you say that the venue takes 60% on the total tikes sales, you mean that is what the band is paying for renting the venue space?? If that so, is F**** crazy, could you please elaborate on that, because I don’t understand how is that possible???

    • @TankTheTech
      @TankTheTech  7 місяців тому

      It's not just a rental fee, no. It's all the costs that come out of the top end of the gross ticket sales. A lot of promoters do charities on tickets (a donation for each ticket sold), taxes from tickets come out, advertising expenses, and then all of the house venue expenses (staff, utilities, etc...). Every little thing that goes into putting on a show is deducted from a show settlement.

  • @brianhaflin9799
    @brianhaflin9799 7 місяців тому +1

    The thing I don’t think you touched on with this video is just the overall percentage when a show makes money. If the general percentage when you start making a profit off of ticket sales is after 70% of the venue is sold out, any shows that don’t means the tour has operated in the red for that particular show unless mech sales go great. This is something I believe many people don’t realize that acts and booking people basically are taking risks when they book shows because unless the act been at the venue before and did well, it hard to predict what ticket sales might be. This doesn’t include the venue side of things which might have something to do with the mech fees idea, so venues are at least making some money if the show flops in terms of revenue for them.
    Many people remember the American Idol Tours that used be the one of the top tours every year but many people don’t realize the failure it was also. Look them up on the Wikipedia for the stats of the tours because many of the tours were only filling places 50%-60% and some of them included the years of the big names also!

      It depends on how the deal is worked out, but on a lot of tours, the support bands' guarantees ARE deducted out of the settlement. So if that were the case here, then yes, the net profit is going to be a lot lower.
