That's what I've always said! However, I take it one step further and I say that it would be even cooler if on top of all that you could optionally go into soldier mode and command your armies and fight with your armies in person, mount and blade style! Assuming the game had fleshed out city/empire building and management and cool diplomacy, it would be the perfect game!

I used to dream like you but then I got -an arrow to the knee- the slothful trait. Nowadays, I am glad that I don't control my battles. With 20+ Martial generals, I would never be able to do better anyway.
A Paradox campaign, mixed with Total wars battle mechanics, and then mixed with mount and blades combat would be the greatest historical gaming experience.
That has always been what I wanted, so like if you were about to fight a major battle, (As in multiplayer or even singleplayer games, fighting the same Russian Division 30 times on the way to Moscow, can get fairly boring), or another player "Declares" it a major battle, (with some fairly minor requirements, like having a large enough army there), and fighting that out, allowing you to still come on top if you have less qualified troops, but are a better commander, possibly like Men of War Assault Squad 2, but more strategical at times. But I don't know how I would feel about Mount and Blade, Maybe you could control individual units of course, but not just possess one man at a time in First Person, that would be far too great a strain on any game engine, A Mix of Men of War Assault Squad 2 and HOI3/HOI4, is probably the most feasible game at this time.
Some of the mechanics would be compromised for each title. But yeah, EU4 could use at least some tactical decisions during battle. Maybe not like TW, but maybe like ES2, or even hexbased battle like El or AoW3. Mount & Blade battle would probably take too long, if you had to fight like that. TW would benefit from a more complex simulated economy and diplomacy like EU4. They have improved in the recent years a bit. If you add a little Civ in the whole, even better. The challenge would be to create a game, that is not too overwhelming and loses focus. Such overly ambitious titles lose most players' interests faster, even if they are well made.

Egor Iakovlev Agreed. I would call this generation the Streamlined Generation (I don't like calling it casual as there is still a ton of depth, but you can play it just fine without understanding everything). With that said... Victoria 2 certainly isn't streamlined lol
i would say less streamlined, and more user friendly. The bigger improvement in the newer wave has been how much more refined and appealing the new games are. A lot less spreadsheet, a lot more aesthetically pleasing, and Paradox has done a great job of explaining all the minutia a lot better in game. I still have to tab out of Vicky 2 quite a bit to find information online, that EU4 and CK2 have provided in game haha
Ian Knight I would say if the AI wasn't so bad it would be just as good as the EU4 and CK2, with as much depth for those who go looking for it... Sadly the AI is garbage. Hoping the Kaisereich mod makes the overall game better
The true answer is, whichever one you can afford without needing a 2nd mortgage. I would therefore steer you away from eu4 and it's 175 dlc expansions, and probably away from hoi4 and it's $20 focus trees. You should probably not wait for Victoria 3 either, since we will all be dead by the time that comes out. Hmm, actually the more I think of it, save your money, go on vacation, and forget that greed exists in the gaming industry.
While I don't think cynicism is necessarily a bad thing and I have my own issues with Paradox's monetization model, I don't think it's bad enough to warrant not playing the games at all. I think EU4 with Art of War and Common Sense is more than enough to get 500 hours of fun and still have plenty left to do, and if you get it on sale you can get those 3 together for like 30 bucks. Similar with CK2, if you get a few key expansions it can be reasonable and give you hundreds of hours to play.
The problem with paradox dlc is that it is hard to find the expansions that matter, and the astronomical 200 pound price tag for eu4 and ck2 includes graphics packs, music and ebooks, so the core game and dlc are more 40-60 pounds.
I bought HOI4 earlier this year, not knowing anything about Paradox, and not having played a grand strategy game since I was a teenager, many years ago. Anyhow, I realised that I have spent 330 hours on the game, generally enjoying the immersion. I paid the full price, and I have not paid for any DLC. Quick calculation puts the price per hour at 0.12 cents - I call that remarkable value. Even if I bought DLC, it would add cents. For every hour I spend, the price per hour reduces so, really, I call it excellent value.
Watching the first time in Jan2020, hears him talk about Victoria III maybe being in a year, gets excited and looks to see when video was released. Sees publish date in 2017 *Violent weeping intensifies*
Fun plan: Start with CK2, attempt to survive as a dynasty from the earliest period, to the "end" time period, then go on to convert into EU4, continue trying to survive, move onto Victoria 2, then go on to HOI4.
Victoria 2 is my all time favorite Grand Strategy and I finally got my friend into it, hopefully they come out with Victoria 3 soon because I'd buy it in a heartbeat
Cities: Skylines is a great game, but it's not really a grand strategy game, otherwise I would've included it! I could do a seperate video sometime making a review of Cities: Skylines, but either way, it's a great game!
Honestly though there's nothing like that feeling you get on HoI4 when you're waiting for months fighting a stalemate war and then all of a sudden you get that one little push that you needed to move the front forward.
Heil Atlantis. I know da feeling, playing with Atlantis Mu Lemuria mod and damn i got pushed back by basicly an african nation, me, Atlantis, with the technology of the gods... Good thing tahiti was there to help me, I began to see them as the equivalent of Japan and France as Italy.
As someone who has over 500 hours in CK2, EU4 and HOI4. CK2: -Most complicated game in the process of mastery however EU4 is more difficult to master. -Great dynamics with the characters. -Definitely has the most sense of humour. -Lack of micro management. -Combat system that is tedious in comparison to EU4 but more fulfilling than HOI4. EU4: -As I said, it is easier to learn than CK2 but harder to master. -More state focused -More micromanagement -Best combat system HOI4: -Most casual game in terms of difficulty. -Best modding community. Personally, I cannot decide if I prefer EU4 or CK2 but HOI4 is definitely my least favourite game due to it being the simplest in my view and the most boring as a result.
Idk mate to me the eu4 war just feels shit. No tactical depth at all there. Like manovering putting the right troop types on right Terrain making good army templates etc. Also the Science and tech thing makes hoi4 just combat just superior in my opinion. Ck is crap but thats just personal preference. Eu4 is rly fun but then again the tech systhem cant keep up in the slightest with hoi4 tech and you need like 0 strategy for combat. But it has way better diplomacy then hoi4 and hoi4 has the national FOCUS systhem wich i Think is not fun. Id say eu4 and hoi4 are on parr. Ones strengt is the others weakness so it depends if you wanna focus on war or diplolacy.
THANK YOU SO MUCH i have been playing games like shooters and ive gotten tired of having to use reaction time being serious all the time and i just wanted to sit back relax and play a game that needs my brain and not my speed. This really helped im now getting into crusader kings 2 thanks so much
"The next game that will happen is probably Victoria 3, but that probably won't come out for another year." Video premiered in 2017. Screams silently here in 2019.
I *love* Hearts of Iron 4. It is quite beginner friendly, but still has enough complexity that it challenges you to learn its mechanics very well, especially when you have'nt played any Paradox game (or Grand Strategy Game in general) before. Having it learned at least a bit, it's so much fun to just pick a country and conquor the world with it in the darkest but also most intense period of time in history. I'm still in the learning phase of the game (after more than 30 hours in game, which do not include the many hours I spend with watching and reading tutorials :D ), but I've already had my first big achivements, conquoring France, Great Britain and the Soviet Union as Germany. Yes, I know, not a big challenge for someone how is already a veteran in this type of game, but for me it was a huge thing and very satisfying. Definitely will play this game a lot more and won't stop doing so in foreseeable future.
that was just to show off the basic idea, i had already been playing that campaign and didnt feel like doing a whole new one and didn't want to show a campaign right at the start of the game (too boring) :)
or, if you have a shitton of time, you can simply play a ck2 into eu4 into vik2 into hoi4 mega campaign and if you still have enough time at hand afterwards, add a stellaris one as humans as well Well i know how i will spend my next vacation from work
In my opinion, I would say that Eu4 is the best Paradox game right now. It's the most refined game with the most complex mechanics. The combat system in Eu4 is also the best.
@@Parto_alliws Dlcs being overpriced doesnt mean its bad, its worth like 80-100 dollars with all DLC i would say. The best thing to do is to buy base game and pirate the dlcs
As a former civ player who transitioned into a GS player, stellaris was and still is my favorite. I love how even with many 4x elements in it, stellaris really feels like a paradox grand strategy game, and it is!
Thank you for this video. Currently I am extremely interested in playing a paradox game but I dunno which one to do. I've seen let's plays of all of them except Victoria II (which I probably won't get cause I'll just wait for III) and they all look so fun in each individual way. Though I am leaning towards CK2, this has really helped me acquire more info on what each game has to offer. Best of wishes
My favorite is always gonna be ck2. It’s the only one that’s really character driven. The rest of them are cool, but get stale quicker due to them mainly just being a game of risk. Just seems more interesting to me to be able to go from a regular old noble to founding a dynasty that will stand strong for centuries.

@@thomlolkema6945 EU4 has gotten better with almost every patch, and is much better than it was when I started playing it. HoI4 was already good but I don't think has made as much progress as EU4 has. Still good though, and it's my 2nd or 3rd most played Paradox game
@@PoetryStud Well I see, thank you. I think I'm leaning more to Hoi4, because ww2 interests me a lot. This video helped me a lot. Waiting for a good sale now to buy my first grand strategy game. (I'm familiar with the concept of burning money on these DLC btw bc I have full Cities Skylines but I'm ready for this genre I think)
With all those grand strategy games that Paradox Games have developed and released over the past decade or so, it's surprising that, to my knowledge, they haven't yet made one that takes place in a high fantasy setting. I'd imagine such a fantasy grand strategy game would be like Dungeons and Dragons/Warcraft meets Crusader Kings/Europa Universalis/Victoria/Hearts of Iron, with some gameplay elements from Stellaris thrown in. Why Stellaris? Well, not only did Stellaris add in gameplay that allowed for players to experience that sense of discovery, expansion, and conquest that comes with 4X games like Civilization or Master of Orion, but it enriched them with all sorts of various events and crises that could happen during gameplay, or the various anomalies, or even ancient fallen empires, that could be encountered through exploration. Such features, imo, are just begging to be used to great effect in a fantasy grand strategy game. (Imagine, during gameplay, when you're, say, playing as a power-hungry human tyrant planning for his next invasion of, say, a neighboring elven kingdom, and building up your legions of knights and archers supported by siege golems and war mages, when all of a sudden, a crisis pops up where, say, an undead plague, a demonic invasion, a dark lord's invading hordes, or even an insidious lovecraftian force threatened to overrun and consume the entire world.) As far as the actual lore and events for such a fantasy grand strategy game are concerned, I'd imagine that they could draw inspiration from settings like Warcraft, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, The Elder Scrolls, and all manner of Dungeons and Dragons settings like Eberron, Ravenholme, or the Forgotten Realms to name a few.
My biggest "problem" with the other games is how many DLCs there are. I have no idea which ones to buy and I have heard that there are some DLCs that are absolutely necessary for the game. I would rather buy a new game and get the DLC as it's released.
The modding community for CK2 with things like GOT and of Stellaris with all the different lore and story mods and giant ship mods are amazing for replayability
I love all of these but I think I either like Vicky 2 or CK2 best because of depth. I love Hearts of Iron IV but I think it has aspects of it that are really dumbed down from Hoi 3. I wish they revamped the political system so it is a little more involved instead of it being just add an adviser, stage coup, or influence the enemies nation. They fixed the air combat which is really nice.
yooooo poetry stud! Congrats on reaching over 1k. Just wanna say don't be afraid to try new things and thank you for the value you provide to the community. I'm a really big fan of Paradox games except Hearts of Iron games. EU4 is my favourite. When I am starting a game in EU4, I am never asking myself which nation I want to play, I am asking myself what is my next achievement.
Thanks for vid! I had a problem which to buy and I bought City Skylines. I regreted it a little so this vid helped me not to do same mistakes in the future.
I would say Victoria 2 really belongs to the last generation. This generation seemed to begin with CK2, with the more streamlined game play... I would like to see what V3 in the same style as the last 3 would be like... Maybe next year or the year after
Great video, I’m a hoi4 player and started out with it, took me a while to get the ropes but I think I’m *alright* now. I’m thinking about checking out the others
Hoi4=Fun and easy to understand/get in to. May lack the challenge once you start playing it s bunch. 1st easiest Hoi3=Hard and challenging but really disorganized and outdated Hoi4 Victoria=Industrial focused with some war aspects, great depth and keeps u interested. 3rd easiest Eu=Really fun, maybe the second easiest, lots of options and different ways to play. Can be harder for people who don't understand paradox type games Ck2=Small individual people. Focused on furthering your family/dynasty. If you like medieval stuff then you'll probably like this :), but remember, it's not all about war. Bottom line, if your starting and just want to declare war and see that side of games, then hoi4 will be your favorite. It's really fun and unrestricted/open to what you want to do. My personal favorite is ck2 because of the great mods they have along with the base game being great. Also hoi4 will become more in depth with releases of new dlc and new mods. Aloha from Hawaii and I Hope this helps!
HOI4 has such a complex army, air and naval combat system. It’s for the real enthusiast. Eu4 is more fun for beginners, army division is simple enough. Economic and trade is easy to learn. Coring territory and aggressive expansion is easy. Managing subject is simple. I personally prefers HOI4 but I can see how majority of people likes EU4
Great video, I'm coming off of civ games really late to the party - just bought Civ 6 😅 takes lot of getting used to from Civ 5 .. this is next level stuff 🙂
half an hour video for what can be said in two words. Victoria II. Also Paradox announces games around a year before they intend to release them. Stellaris announced at Gamescon 2015(10 months later) HOI4 announced in 2014(intended release 2015 but delayed a year.) If we also look at the schedules of the paradox studio veterans we don't really see a big enough gap to fit a project the size of whole new game in there, they currently are working on 4 games in parallel. So yeah, if there ever is going to be a victoria III we won't see until at least 2019, most likely 2020. But I honestly think there is a greater internal desire to make CKIII, because CKII was on the cusp between old and new paradox. It's a lot easier for paradox to think of ideas for direction to take crusader kings in, but they are hampered by the limitation of a game.
I played vic 2 and I was wondering what the other games are like, thanks for the video I think I might watch the CK3 video next, although I think it is quite expensive for me!
CK3 is definitley expensive and probably won't go on sale anytime soon. However, what I will say is that it's the probably the best Paradox base game, and it already has more features than CK2 did with 3 or 4 DLCs. Also, iirc, CK2 is free to play now, so you could try that to see if you like the style of gameplay! 2 and 3 are essentially the same so if you like 2, you'll like 3.
The fact that I fell in love with RTS and grand strategy games when I was like 9 and the only one I have been able to play is Total War: Rome mobile, C&C red alert 3. And soon console stellaris. I thirst for more!
@@LordVader1094 Or, better yet, it could work like the Merchant Republic, with Voting for a Patrician being replaced with voting for a Party, and ever so many Years a new Person from the Party Court will be Elected to the Party. The Party will be a Title, and each one will have a Specific Ideology Tied to it. If an Anti-Democratic Party, like, say, the Communists or Fascists are Elected, they will get a Chance to Start a Coup, or Slowly Dismantle the Constitution.
What we need is a Medieval III Total war with CK II level character interaction and diplomacy, Mount and Blade like lead the army command live in action and RPG elements to add to the fix, oh and some dragons for fun! Best game ever! :)
The games have evolved. An update after CK3 comes out and maybe had the first major patch together with the newer titles including new DLCs from today back to EU4 at least would be most welcome.
You do a really good job of highlighting the selling points for all these games. They all look appealing for different reasons. I currently own Stellaris and HOI4. Stellaris is easy to get into. I find HOI4 is insanely confusing. But eventually I'll get the hang of it and then I'll move on to.....EU4? That seems to be the most popular followed closely by CK2. But then, the other ones look good too so we'll see
Im new to the strategy game scene, all these paradox games looks really interesting especially stellaris. I've played BNW and all that and was wondering what the best paradox game for me would be
I remember back in 2012 I got a WW2 RTS called RUSE. I absolutely loved it, but I longed for a game with the same elements but on a global scale. I then discovered the grand strategy genre, and now I think Victoria II is my favorite game.
I had the same thing happen to me, but for me it was first with Mount and Blade: Warband and then Civ 5, both of which left me wanting more large scale depth. It just happened that I found EU4 after that and from there I've done a lot with each of the main paradox grand strategy games :P
As an old paradox player my most favourite two grand strategy games are victoria and crusader kings. Crusader Kings is best at role play and storytelling while victoria is best at managing a country with reallistic mechanics.
My first experience with paradox was with CK2 with the game of thrones mod and i didn’t even know what it was and deleted it. Then a year later i was looking for a complex world war 2 game and found the perfect hame, HOI IV was so hard and i spent a whole week watching videos and playing and testing and didn’t even get all of it. Maybe months later i fully understood it. Then i wanted to play everything paradox, so i got europa universalis IV and played it, wasn’t as sucked into it and only played one full game from befining to end, it’s cool i guess but i couldn’t get it and it didn’t get me like HOI IV. But then i played Vicky 2 and did the same with learning the game for a whole week by playing the whole tutorial and watching a couple of videos. And i could say with the most confidence, VICKY 2 is the best! Everything in it is cool, it is complex and smart and makes you feel good about yourself. So my fav is vicky 2, hoi 4, CK2 and europa universalis. I couldn’t bother with stellaris, that shit doesn’t interest me.
"Hopefully Victoria 2 will be coming out with Victoria 3 soon. That's probably gonna be in another year" Poetry stud, 2017 Sorry bro I wish Vicky 3 would come out too, its been a couple years and still not a peep. Also years ago your video turned me on to ck2 thanks, its my favorite game!
Too much political and industrial? The entire game and almost all mods for the game are focused around war. There are barely any actual interesting things happen
+Holy Doggo That's the exact reason why I haven't bought HoI 4 yet: the war aspect is probably the least fleshed out and least interesting part for me in Paradox games. It's the empire management where they really show their skill, but unfortunately war is all there is in HoI 4. In fact the game straight up ends if there aren't enough wars going on.
“Including Stellaris although I’ll not be going into to much detail with that one.” I feel this quote is not only from your vid but also Paradox dev team
looking at what is your best spec on the pc, if its ram play eu4/ck2 (victoria2 for much quicker gameplay) ir its the processor or GPU then hoi4/stellaris (although HOI3 seems pretty gpu intensive for me idk).

@@PoetryStud Best method is to get the game legally and then get the DLC not legally
The only EU4 expansion you really need is El Dorado (for custom nations).

vicky2 ai is too realistic
And then there's eu4, in which the ai besieges a military - less country while a country with a pathetic military occupies everything else :P

CK2:
-Most complicated game in the process of mastery however EU4 is more difficult to master.
-Great dynamics with the characters.
-Definitely has the most sense of humour.
-Lack of micro management.
-Combat system that is tedious in comparison to EU4 but more fulfilling than HOI4.
EU4:
-As I said, it is easier to learn than CK2 but harder to master.
-More state focused
-More micromanagement
-Best combat system
HOI4:
-Most casual game in terms of difficulty.

Savaris96 I’ll probably just do eu4 - Vic2 maybe hoi4 aswell

(Imagine, during gameplay, when you're, say, playing as a power-hungry human tyrant planning for his next invasion of, say, a neighboring elven kingdom, and building up your legions of knights and archers supported by siege golems and war mages, when all of a sudden, a crisis pops up where, say, an undead plague, a demonic invasion, a dark lord's invading hordes, or even an insidious lovecraftian force threatened to overrun and consume the entire world.)
As far as the actual lore and events for such a fantasy grand strategy game are concerned, I'd imagine that they could draw inspiration from settings like Warcraft, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, The Elder Scrolls, and all manner of Dungeons and Dragons settings like Eberron, Ravenholme, or the Forgotten Realms to name a few.
You got Age of wonders 4 now !!!

Great video, I’m a hoi4 player and started out with it, took me a while to get the ropes but I think I’m *alright* now. I’m thinking about checking out the others
Hoi4=Fun and easy to understand/get in to. May lack the challenge once you start playing it s bunch. 1st easiest
Hoi3=Hard and challenging but really disorganized and outdated Hoi4
Victoria=Industrial focused with some war aspects, great depth and keeps u interested. 3rd easiest
Eu=Really fun, maybe the second easiest, lots of options and different ways to play. Can be harder for people who don't understand paradox type games
Ck2=Small individual people.

Great comparison video Brother! Thanks! =)
half an hour video for what can be said in two words.
Can’t wait for Incest Kings 3
The fact that I fell in love with RTS and grand strategy games when I was like 9 and the only one I have been able to play is Total War: Rome mobile, C&C red alert 3. And soon console stellaris. I thirst for more!
honestly if EU4 had the CK2 dynasty system it would make the game 100x awesomer
I do agree, although I don't think its strictly necessary for EU4 to have it

Mexican Mapper did you just compare a strategy game to a sandbox game?
I remember back in 2012 I got a WW2 RTS called RUSE. I absolutely loved it, but I longed for a game with the same elements but on a global scale. I then discovered the grand strategy genre, and now I think Victoria II is my favorite game.
I had the same thing happen to me, but for me it was first with Mount and Blade: Warband and then Civ 5, both of which left me wanting more large scale depth. It just happened that I found EU4 after that and from there I've done a lot with each of the main paradox grand strategy games :P
I don't get how so many people rate Vic II so highley. I had fun with it for about a month. I will always always go back to CKII.
I think it's just a difference in taste. Vic II is in depth but country/trade/industry focused, while CKII is character focused.

That's the exact reason why I haven't bought HoI 4 yet: the war aspect is probably the least fleshed out and least interesting part for me in Paradox games. It's the empire management where they really show their skill, but unfortunately war is all there is in HoI 4. In fact the game straight up ends if there aren't enough wars going on.
