  • With several surges, Boston Celtics built a 66-52 halftime lead and increased it to 20 points midway through the third quarter. The Lakers were playing without Earvin (Magic) Johnson, and their coach, Pat Riley, said, ''When we were down by 20, without Magic, I didn't have any pearls of wisdom.''
But Riley did have Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Michael Cooper and Jamaal Wilkes, who combined for 34 of the Lakers' 41 fourth-quarter points as Los Angeles rallied for a 119-113 victory.
It was a great old-school battle between two great centers, Jabbar and Parish. Kareem finished the game with 35 points and Parish added 29.

Even though the video quality is not good, it's still rewarding to be able to watch this gem. I remember Robert Parish in an interview once saying that, when he played Kareem for the first time as a member of the Warriors, he said, "Let me just say- it was a veeeerrry humbling experience!" And here, in '82, you can see that he more than belongs with Kareem on the court. Great battle!

No one ever "belonged" with Kareem on the court

Robert Parish was a great center in his own right.

Don't blame Bird. When the sky hook was clicking like that, Everybody Lost.

This is honestly the first time I watched either of these two teams play. Two of the best teams in the league. Celtics dominated for two and a half quarters (leading by as many as 20) and then LA made an amazing comeback. Then I remember just a week later they met again, this time out in LA and the Celtics came from behind to get even.

Back when there were true rivalries. Bird and Magic, etc., didn't scheme about letting their contracts expire and then signing somewhere else together.

So Bird hits a 70 footer after the buzzer - then hits a shot from his fanny that doesnt count. It just adds to the legend of Larry Bird !! You just never knew what he was gonna do next.

One thing we learned was that opposing the Lakers meant Larry would lose.

One thing you could count on Bird doing: Losing to Magic

@@mja91352 No doubt Magic got the upper hand. No argument there ! But you say it like Larry lost to a bunch of bums. Not many players and teams were beating those Laker teams of the 80's. They were a Dynasty. But the Celtics were great in there own right and gave the Lakers all they could handle. And I'm just typing down what Magic and Worthy and Kareem and all t h e Lakers would say the battles with Larry and those Celtic teams brought out the best in them. Also I think your forgetting that in 86 the Celtics won both regular season games vs the Lakers and would have beating the Lakers in 5 or 6 games in 86. The Lakers were not beating the Celtics in 86. The Lakers got rolled in 5 vs Houston in 86. The head to head Larry vs Magic looks very different if the Lakers made it to the Finals in 86.

The only certainty was that Bird's Celtics would lose to Magic's Lakers.

@@mja91352 were you counting on that in 1984? That must have been a long summer for you.
In 1985 Kareem bailed Tragic Johnson out with his domination of Boston's front line.

Reigning champs give up lead to eventual champs w/out Magic. It's a shame they didn't meet up in the final's before 84...

They would have, if they didn't fall behind 3-1 to the sixers, it's their own fault, who knows what could have been.

Yes, but don't forget...From 1980-84, it was the Big Three -- Celtics, Lakers, and 76ers. The Sixers were formidable, and every bit the equal of the Celtics, and of course surpassed them as well as the Lakers in '83 when Moses arrived.

postaltraining Only 11 points, the lowest ever vs LA, but I'd have to know his assist, rebounds, steals, etc. to know, he might have had a triple double.

Bird had 16 pts, counting the 70-footer & shot from the floor under basket
Celtics returned favor a week later, outscoring Lakers by 10 in 4th, won by 5.
Bird scored 15; Parish & Cornbread had big nights; Jabbar scored 20 or so.

MerkinMuffly My book "Portrait of a competitor" has Bird with 11 points and 10 rebounds and 9 assists - almost a triple double. Great footage here, never saw that 70 footer or the shot from the floor after fighting Rambis for the ball. Bird just had a gift for doing incredible things at any given moment!
