Adding to everyone's stories, I've had 3 black hearts. First one I had no clue about them, I was in Providence Ridge. The "cloud of influence" extended almost half way up the hill up from the area of the lumber base. So I had to hoof it bcs of no gas. Made it the lumber and survivor Zzz popped up - fml lol - almost lost my survivor bcs of how tough it was and distance I had to run out or walk out of. Was crazy time.
2nd time, was in Cascade hill right after I moved into the base over the river. That one glitched out. The heart was near the starting zone houses and the circle of influence was up til about the railroad tracks, but in mere minutes it extended all into the my base area. due to distance on foot and my other survivors in the cloud I abandoned that community. F that! lol
the 3rd one I got in at the Dino base in Trumbull but lucky the cloud of influence only stayed in that general area. Because it didn't grow and would just spew out infesting hordes I let it be trying to see if I could eventually get to the enclave to figure the "secret" to beating the heart. So I drove the car up to the perimeter and grinded on the zombies to get the 5 samples the enclave needed. Switched survivors due to the health tick, and dropped off the samples. Was told it was susceptible to range attacks. Went to base, picked up an assault rife with high amounts of bullets AND scentblock. Stealthed until the zombies grew in larger amounts and used the scentblock all the way to the heart and let it rip. Heart went down pretty easy.
It will be fun to see how it goes this time around after nerf and now that I have a strategy more or less in place. Thanks Brian for showing me this game. That first black heart really tested my patience, and skill trying to not loose my survivor (not cause attachment hehe but dammit my resources LOL)

I stumbled across your sod2 streams 2 weeks ago and enjoyed them so much I binged them all...and it inspired me to start a STANDARD playthrough for 1st time in 5 years...I then got 2 black plague hearts almost losing every survivor to the 1st one and lost my medicine and powerhouse/automechanic to the 2nd. The 2nd one had the fuel and improved senses curveball zombies and I had to park and run with a marathon survivor to the heart take a few hits and run back...this strategy worked...needless to say as a new player I turned off curveballs after that lol...glad to see it was nerfed a bit but did enjoy the challenge...

Couple of months ago i started playing so started off on easy mode tutorial and a Black Plague appeared on my map very quickly. I didn't go near it after internet searching what they were lol. but i can tell you it covered a large corner of the map and it slowly spread eventually covering 3 plague heart areas. I was on the Providence Ridge map. Cant believe you’ve never had one!

Hey Brian, I had a Black Plague Heart once. It is quite easy to survive with all the techniques you taught, but the heart was really robust. It took me around 18 C4 charges to kill it in Lethal. So long, and it spawns zombie all over, all the time. Plus the area where it is that makes damage, so you need tons, and I mean tons of heals... I hope not to see one again, just cause it is a waste of resources, and time. But, hey, when you have done all the maps, it is nice to have this feature. Love your lives and videos. Thank you for all the good times
Re-watching this now you have the other videos, I play on Xbox X and I have not had any bloaters spawn in front of me since that update either. Used to happen a lot to me, not no more. :D Started my final legacy on Nightmare then going to try my luck on Lethal Zone. Watching your vids have helped improve how I play on Nightmare and will use that on Lethal. Only mission i avoid early stage is the stolen Meds as I do not want any deaths early since you fight hostiles. Where you mentioned that you should have lost 3 food for the day, it is most likely due to the fact when you finally picked your community it was night time.

I moved base on Druker... The black heart spawend across the road from my base and I wiped straight away. The Design quirk skill I have seen hundreds of times over the last few years.

I'm sorry to hear you've never seen a black plague heart! I've had two, and with them now being nerfed, I doubt it will be much of a challenge when you finally come across one
Just killed one on Nightmare that also had a Fuel Miasma in the same area so Z's were exploding as well! But discovered weakness was explosives so one drone strike and 2 grenades ended it. Still had to end the Fuel Miasma after though.

Very small update but some QoL changes that I’ve been hoping for. Particularly the inventory management stuff. Didn’t expect the rucksack deposit at outposts but I definitely appreciate that one.
Black plague hearts were brutal. I rolled one on the second day of a new community, I started with three red talon characters. Tried brute forcing my way through it without doing the side quest associated with it, and lost two red talon contractors, lol.

Hey, Brian, last time I had a Black One mid game right in the middle of Marshall in Trumbull. Pain in the back, let me tell you!
I'll describe the black plague heart like this, you are constantly healing before you even see the street, or the house the black heart is in. The radius of the influence of a black heart is the same size as other curveballs and that just doesn't feel right. The maps have one way traffic so it is very easy to get locked out of sections of the map. You can't set up an outpost nearby and launch raids on the heart, it's time to journey into darkness, then get to the closest exit before you lose your survivor.
Your question just brought back a lot of suppressed memories of that fight. I have not felt genuinely afraid like that in this game for a while even though I only just recently made it through Heartland with Larisse's community, the harder option.

I had a strange bug. I was fighting a plague heart and i heard a ferral coming i shot the ferrel lots of times in the head and it dient die i had gunslinging so iwas defo hitting the head but dident die so i had to use my car and it died have u had this happen

I ran into 2 black plague hearts and it was brutal. the first time you were supposed to get info from a survivor in another enclave on how to beat it, but there was a bug that stopped that info from being given to you and my survivor died trying to kill it, the second time the bug had been fixed, I got the info and used smoke grenades to blind the zombies while I whacked away at the black heart, the other thing that was a pita was how the heart would drain your gas from your vehicle during a certain curveball, it made me turn off curveballs and message undead labs about it, glad to hear they listened to the community and changed it a bit, time to turn curveballs back on, can't wait to play the new update.

Dear Brian, I feel entitled to answer the question you asked at 10:55. Yes, they are pretty hard and change your whole playthrough, especially if you get them early (reminder: mine showed up on day 2 on a brand new lethal zone community). I didn't want to recruit more experienced survivors or use any feature such as the Red Talon stuff to help me deal with it, so I continued playing and it was really hard to go about my game and having to stop to destroy infestations at the same time. This being said, the other curveballs helped me a great deal (especially the one thanks to which everything costs one resource only in your base). I followed your advice: I have been patient, building up the arsenal I needed the accursed heart it down and, this very afternoon, I did it! Took me eight or nine C4 charges though... Finally, I would like to really thank you, as your playthroughs have really helped me understand what to do to beat this great game.

I’ve had 2 black plague hearts. The first one basically caused my community wipe. It sucked the gas out of my car and it was overlapped with zombies that catch fire when killed. My survivor ran out of gas, health ticked down really low and then I got jumped by 3 ferals and really couldn’t do anything about it.
I beat the second one I ran into, but it was really challenging. I had to leave and come back like 4 times because I kept running out of supplies to sustain myself. Not to mention the zombies were tougher and they could also sense me from extremely far away and would basically never stop chasing me once they caught wind of me. It was unreal. There was never a moment without at least 15 zombies on my ass. The edge of the black plague territory was also right by my base so even when I went home to recover I had to fight for a while.
I’d say early in a community, it’s almost certainly a wipe scenario if you’re not a God tier player. And if you’re newer to lethal, it’s probably still a wipe late game depending on the debuffs and if other curveballs overlap to make it worse.

On my most recent lethal game, a black heart shiwed up on day 2 in the midst of a city. It has a 1000m aura that sucks gas out of cars instantly upon entering. So you gotta walk the whole way. The zombies in black heart zone have blue eyes and see you from very far away and they alert all other blue eye zombies to your presence.
My community was just besieged with infestations over and over. My attempts to kill the heart went no where as it has about 1 Brazillian health. And i had minimal gear. Also scentblock doesnt work in black heart territory, the zombies see right through it.

With black plague hearts I usually do a feast from cooking and then I use a character I don’t mind losing. Having a sniper support helps a lot too not for the heart but if you run into ferals or jugs on the way there not wasting what you carry to the heart. Also calling in encouragement helps a lot right before you fight and lots of healing. The losing gas rapidly was overpowered though even with great fuel efficiency it’s lost crazy fast.

You need a high morale community to increase the roll chance of a black plague heart. The low morale playthrough style makes it extremely rare.

Yes if you in the purple area health and stamina decrease just driving in the territory. Back to work but I will watch more of this later.
Is blood plague survivor that helpful because I usually just compound a few hygiene and a hero bonus of plague resistance and don’t have issues. One community I had like +350% plague resistance and it took super long too get it.
Doing black plague hearts alone is rough, but multiplayer isn't bad. All players bring in rapid-fire weapons, fire throwables, stimulants, and blunt weapons. Each does a phase of blunt and fire, then mag dump until its dead.
so just got my first black heart curevball what joy it was. as soon as you get in the region of the black heart you start taking damage. i must have shot about 20 40 mm grenades at the thing and it was still alive the things are tanks and i dont even play on nightmare mode rn cant imagine 1 in lethal zone
What survivor do you choose to sacrifice to take down the black heart that spawned
All I want added to the game is: a sharpening option under the graphics setting, a higher difficulty than lethal and survivor cap increased to 15.

When it comes to seeing enclave traits I think it be cool if you could learn about them more if you enlist them as a follower like when one of your community members tells a story about them selves

Now, I have a theory about BPH-s. I started a new game a while back and used Your teachings. I have not encountered BPH jet. Only thing Im doing different this time, is that I have not choucen a leader for my community, as I learned from You. So every other time I have played I have had a BPH pretty much from the start of the game, but I have chosen the leader ASAP.
As its only one time I cant be sure, but thats one thing You do, as I understand! :D

I got the game two months back and almost dropped it because of black hearts. Didn't know I could just turn off curveballs.
First community i started with my own survivors I got a black heart day 6. Played on dread, Plague heart spawned in marshal linked with three other hearts. Was still in trumble starting base, heart had toxic miasma. Lost two survs trying to get the samples. Scrapped the community after that.
Second community spawned on day 2. Cascade hills down by the landmark outpost, linked to three or four hearts. Hadn't killed a single heart on that playthough yet and had no resources to kill a black heart. It had fuel drain and I didn't read the description, drove into the zone and got stranded and killed. Reset
Third community was 5 days in, black heart engulfed an outpost that I had made near the edge of what was a normal heart. It wasn't linked to another heart and had toxic miasma. I went in and activated mines to try and farm the samples. Plague zeds were immune to the fire mines. Swarmed and killed me. Finally got the samples and used the only scentblock that I purchased from a vendor to reach the scientist. Learned the weakness was fire. Used 7 thermite grenades trying to kill the heart before getting shredded. Not sure how low it was but I don't think it had done its second gas attack yet..
And that's when I decided the game wasn't fun and I was done. Then I learned I could just turn curveballs off. So glad I did because I love this game. So glad to see black hearts got what was coming to them. I have killed three pre-nerf black hearts after a community with curveballs off, and I still thought they were bs. But having more knowledge and strategy made them manageable.
Look me 2 hours to get 3 blood plague survivors but 2 of them had hairdresser 5th... So I opened a salon at the end of the world. Lol

I've not been able to play the PC version in over a year due to a profile bug and have had very little communication with undead labs customer support.
the black plague hearts for me were super difficult, after numerous attempts to try and kill it, i kind of raged out and disabled curveballs from my game from that point on. if you do get a black heart brian, id love to see how you take it down.
BTW…i’ve been watching all of your SOD1 & SOD2 gameplays and i have learned waaayyyy too much that’s helped me in my games. i love your videos. you and crystal are amazing. ❤

Black hearts are rough, the first time i tried one i lost 2 survivors and sent my people to legacy pool and deleted it, only play lethal zone and it made me rage lol
I've fought a few black plague hearts. They drained my full gas tank to empty in about 6 seconds and had quite a lot lf range so had to walk or more like run with the fast zombies curveball.
Quite a bit harder than regular plague hearts :O
They also had a particular weakness so I had to adapt the strategy
The black hearts were SO bad the first time we encountered one, the second one was very challenging but manageable. Took a lot of trips and resources
I sometimes miss driving mechanics from the first game, if you drive reckless and crash you go flying out of the car, if you hit a juggernaut with your car your tires are getting blown out, if your car blows up its gone there's no fixing it along with what's in the car storage it's all gone
Oh no brother. I watched every painful minute. It got kinda funny after a while.
I never thought that the difficulty was anything bad, not even on lethal. I can play the game in many ways, I can attack hearts in differnt ways nd each way is more difficult for me, or it is is easier on me.
So I faced a black heart (pre update 36) it did hurt, it did drain and all that, but I did not do as it seems 99% of players did, go in close and melee it, using various smoke and other boons while doing it.
I found a line of sight, gor onto a car roof and shot the heart dead, I used much more ammo, but at the same time I also have a lot of ammo as this is easy to find.
I have now 8 survivors, i use 16 guns at the most, one sidearm usually a .22 and a main gun, most often a 7.62 , 50 cal or a 5.56 auto.
I have yet to see how the black heart was difficult , but I never ever managed to kill one going in melee....
So the difficulty is more less only as we play it, not as it is programmed or created.
Shooting a heart froma distance = Easy
Melee a heart up close = hard
My game difficulty is ONLY determined how I choose to play the game, I choose to never or very rarely go up close and engage din melee...and then I claim this is the game difficulty...when it is not, it my choises
I have not ever seen a Black Plague Heart either. Weird!
