Thanks for the video Joe. I have a new Icom 5100 and haven't been able to wrap my head around the whole 'DVDongle' thing yet. I don't have any D Star repeaters within 150 miles ... so I'll need one. Also, A cheaper alternative to the Audio-Technica is the Blue Snowball. I have one that I paid $50 for at Best Buy and they are excellent mics.
Yes I have the same issue at my QTH, the Icom 880h cannot reach any Dstar repeaters. The DVdongle solved that issue in my ham shack. There is a new model DVdongle -- the "DV 3K Dongle", it's cheaper but I have never used one. Here is a link: www.dv3kdongle.com/DV3K_Dongle/Home.html 73
The high frequency sound you hear each time I select something is a "fake" static sound that indicates you are connected. It can be turned off in the software.
The DVdongle and ThumbDV must not actually contain radios inside the devices, since you are out of radio range with a much higher powered D-Star mobile radio. What does the USB hardware actually do if the USB hardware do not contain radios? I wonder if software alone could replace the USB devices, enabling you to access D-Star reflectors directly through the Internet with a computer, running software alone.
Remember that you cannot just buy a radio and start transmitting. You will not understand how to do that. Lots of buttons and setting s needed. It's not like the radio in your car.
I have a dv dongle for dstar. It contains everything you need to transmit and receive. You go into the repeaters and reflectors via the internet. As I mentioned I use this device since I am to far to hit a dstar repeater from my home. It simply plugs into your internet enabled computer via usb cable.
I use all modes C4 and DMR .. Dstar comes last in the three to much packet loss I use a a Shark RF I personally giv Dstar a thumbs down compare to C4 and DMR.. Thanks for doing the video Joe - K5NOV
Thanks for nice comment-- I have a CS800 and an MD380 in the shack. I find more activity on Dstar than on DMR; however I am not on the Brandmeister network so I cannot really say?? I find the audio comparable if both parties have a good internet connection. 73

Joe Lalumia Thanks for the information about that annoying fake static sound! I head no idea why that sound occurred.
