I keep getting images in my head of clothes I'd like to make and wear but have absolutely no idea where to start. Your channel has encouraged me to give it a go. Thanks. You have a new very appreciative fan. 👑
Hallelujah just what I was looking for. I’m from American, I sure wish I could join your sewing 🧵 class. You make everything look and seam so easy. Thanks for giving me the confidence to try new ways of sewing. I’ve subscribed to your site. Thank and Bless you.
Love!! The only thing I might do differently is to sew the elastic and skirt right sides together then press the elastic up and top stitch where the elastic and skirt meet.
I used a jumpsuit pattern to make pants, leaving me with 5/8" to make an elastic waist. Then I found 2" waistband elastic in my stash. I'd never used it before.🤔Your video method of installing it was absolutely the best! Very simple clean finish. I am subscribing to your UA-cam channel for more great tutorials. Thank you!
I'm going to make an exposed elastic skirt for my granddaughter - she is only 3. I've tried this before for some of my older grands and the never laid well. The others I have watched usually cut the fabric to the max stretch of the elastic and didn't gather the fabric. I think that causes the elastic to be overstretched. Your method of assisting the elastic by gathering first sounds like the remedy for this - your skirt hangs beautifully ! I have a nice drapey fabric - and what 3 year old girl doesn't love a skirt that twirls!!!! Thank You so much
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I bought my first "slippery" fabric yesterday to make the new M8098 pants. When I saw metallic elastic, my heart skipped a beat. Having never sewn an exposed waistband, I was a little bit hesitant to give it a try, but your tutorial was so perfect that I'm ready to tackle it now. I just appreciate your time and effort and skills so very much! You have a brand new follower in me, but I already see that I'll be learning a lot from you in the future.
I've been wondering how to sew something like this. The measuring tactics are super helpful. There doesn't seem to be a gathering function on my machine, but that looks so much easier than two basting stitches and pulling them by hand! Jealous.
I am repairing a skirt that I wear cycling for exercise. I wear it for modesty over bike shorts. The elastic had stretched out, and so I removed it from the "pocket." I don't want the skirt to be any shorter and I have "bargain" peach colored metallic elastic that actually matches this orange skirt so I will sew it on top.
This is perfect, just what I was looking for! I'm going to sew one skirt in a cotton toile, which should be easy peasy...and then I'll be trying it with one of those tricky slippery fabrics. Wish me luck.
OMG- I love ur video, you are so talented! I do not sew, but i like to do "simple " alterations when I can and you have given me hope and confidence. You have a wonderful style and a beautiful smile-Thank you!!!
Im just getting back into sewing and this video was wonderful. I have a question and am looking for clarification. When attaching the elastic to the skirt how taunt do you pull the elastic. I made a circle skirt with an exposed elastic band and i think i pulled it waaaaay to tight because it didnt fit snugly at my true waist. Thank you for this wonderful video and content :)
Your vid came up on my alerts I stopped my housework for a well needed break 😂. I've made an exposed elastic circle skirt before and loved it. I love how you are making elasticated waist garments trendy. I prefer elastic waist in some of my clothes, it looks super and snatches that waist. I particularly like the skirt maxi length in the summer. Also knee length with boots is super smart, Oohh floor length tulle🤔. Got me thinking now. Great video.
I love the band on the out side, I'm not a real good sewer, I'm self taught 😏 for me patterns are to complicated. I dont FOLLOW them well.Im HAPPY you have come to light💃💃💃💃💃 I can FOLLOW you, thanks so much,I have some friends, who love to sew an willing to learn. I will pass this to them, also the sleeve video, 😘🙏💕
Uhhh I love this, turned out so beautiful. Matter of fact I have a skirt that I bought a year ago, it was a little too tight but had enough material allowance to resize it. It’s been sitting next to my machine waiting to be sewn back up for ages 😒 (why am I like this😤). My elastic isn’t thick enough, I’m going to attempt using a thicker elastic band. Where do you buy your colourful elastic from?. I’d wear my skirts with either trainers, heels or clogs, depending on the occasion and the style of the skirt 💃🏾! Xx
JULIET UZOR 😂😂 Uiii Etsy is dangerous territory, you go on there for a personalised tee and you leave with £200 worth of extra stuff that you didn’t even know you needed 😂. I’ll have a look though. 🧡xx
I used the longest stitch on the machine and turned adjusted the tension as well. I also think the lightness of the fabric helped it to gather so so well.
Juliet your skirt is amazing and I love that fabric brava to you. I like wearing my skirts with ankle boots sandels and long length boots. If I am in and office working I would wear a simple elegant wear of shoes 👠 and going out with friends and family. 👜👠👢❤️❤️
Hi there Juliet, thanks so so much for your lovely comment. The elastics, I have bought from so so many different stores. See, when I walk into a store and see an interesting looking elastic, I buy some in my waist measurement for the future. 🤣🤣
how do I inbox you a picture to ask you to do a tutorial on a waistband that cinched and gathered a certain way on a skirt I like. I don't know what to really call it. with the same type of waitband
I have questions 🥺 To start, I want to make a 3 layer tulle skirt. I want the tulle to be attached to an elastic band, but I don’t want to use the loop technique (in which the tulle in looped onto the elastic) My question is, Should I stretch the elastic as I’m sewing the tulle onto it? Or should I just see the tulle onto the already pre-measured elastic band and don’t stretch it? I don’t know where to start 😫
Hold on. What was that gathering trick you used on your machine? And why do I not know this method?! I’ve been hand basting or sewing with a very wide stitch then pulling it to gather (like a fool) not thinking there was a better way!
Hmm.... you cracked me up with this one 😆 ok so what I did was... I cranked up the stitch length to the highest and the tension as well. It only works with lighter weight fabrics though. 🙈
Do you think this could be made with a lightweight knit fabric? Also, I noticed you made your "pincushion" with thin straps. I made one before but the straps are a little wide. Going to make another one with thinner straps or maybe ribbon.
I have made this skirt 3x. Everytime the elastic looks stretched. What am I doing wrong! I am sewing with cotton woven. Could that be the problem? Because the fabric doesnt stretch ?
whateverkatiesews awww thanks Katie. It was my regular sewing machine foot. I just changed the settings on my machine. - turn up stitch length to the highest as I cranked up the tension to the highest number as well
I dont know if I can still ask a question about this tutorial. What gathering method do you use? I could not find out what you where using as a method.
Trying to make a skirt for my Granddaughter out of an old dress she had. I've gathered the material and taken her waist measurement. It's 28 inches. How can I make it work with a 1 inch elastic band? I just sent a link of the project... I don't know how to send the picture of what I am working on, besides this way ... Sorry...

i like that you're giving instructions, but the movements are rather quick and you're not showing how it should look at each stage. I'm new to sewing so I'm watching a lot of videos. Thanks for the channel though. I'll keep watching.
Videos would be great if the written instructions weren’t so fast. I kept having to pause the video just to read some of them in time. The text needs to be on the screen for long enough to read it, process it, then pause it if needed. One text was so fast I couldn’t even hit the pause button on time and had to rewind the video 5 times.

Hi Juliet - I made this in a full length hot pink tartan for a Scottish Ceilidh. It was so easy! THANK YOU so much!!!
I wear long black skirts with ankle boots with just a little heel on them. Makes me feel powerful
Your right! It’s got a powerful look to it😁😁😍

You make this look so easy…. have an idea in my head to incorporate two mud cloth fabrics together in a mix match design with an elastic waistband.
You look great in your new skirt.
Oh thank you!
It’s really pretty. I like skirts in the summer and cold shoulder tops. In the winter I like pants and soft knits
Love!! The only thing I might do differently is to sew the elastic and skirt right sides together then press the elastic up and top stitch where the elastic and skirt meet.
Woo hoo !! I tried it ... with frilly elastic and for a first try - looks great ! Thank you for sharing. Your skirt fits beautifully. 🙂

ohhh.... I'm so glad it helped! 🎉
Great saw this in a store class that they no longer offer. Thank you
Oh really?
Ive learnt some thing new. Ive been tryin to sew on the elastic without making gathers 1st. A nightmare indeed.

How did you gather I have same singer machine what stitch length did you use
Nice tutorial and beautiful scissors.
☺️☺️thanks
If you wanted a lining too how would you do it?
The skirt looks lovely 😁 thank you for the video ♥️
Awww... thanks so much
Ia that singer machine and what stitch length do you use for gathering fabric
I use the longest stitch length on any machine 🥰🥰🥰 thanks so much
Hi doll
Quick question, which stitch did u use for gathering? Please and thank you, I looked at the manual but I can’t seem to find it. 😅
I used the longest stitch on the machine and turned adjusted the tension as well. I also think the lightness of the fabric helped it to gather so so well.

Hi there!!!! 👋🏽 I find my wide elastics on eBay and Etsy. Search for 2 or 3 inch wide elastics
@@JulietUzor_ thank you for replying
I have a small generic sewing machine and I don't think it can gather. What can I do?
Boots and very simple flat sandals😌
Ahhhh... that is a total look!!

Hi why did you take 1.5 away from the elastic instead of add for allowance?
I’m learning … Making pockets ahead before gathering the top would be easier
Beautiful skirt
Thank you 😀

What Swing machine you are using?
Hello Meena. Sorry I’ve been away from
my messages. The sewing machine I’m using in this video is called singer quantum stylist 9960
Music on point also

I think it can be made with lightweight knit fabric. Sure!
Also, I have made lots of these pincushions and keep interchanging them. Lol. Some are thicker than the others. 🙈🙈
Great job. How wide is the elastic band?
This one was 2” wide. 😁😁
I have made this skirt 3x. Everytime the elastic looks stretched. What am I doing wrong! I am sewing with cotton woven. Could that be the problem? Because the fabric doesnt stretch ?
That’s probably the reason. The skirt I made was with voile fabric and the elastic was quite thick. 💁🏽♀️
Did you use the serger on the seam allowance
yes, I did, Jes.
@@JulietUzor_ thanks for the reply
Thanks for a great video. Were you using a special gathering stitch on your machine to get your gather? Or was it a foot? Not seen that before!
