I think, that it tells everything about his skills.
Ferrari was absolutely down in 1996, but Michael made a Team out of Ferrari and he was able to understand what went wrong and developed the car over the next years to an absolute winning car and also developed the team with his absolutely unique input. Yeah, the F310 really was a complete failure. A brand new engine that had many many issues in it's first 3 years basically, a new gearbox concept that didn't really work until 97, completely messed up aerodynamics (cockpit sides, airbox, sidepods, engine cover) it was basically a truck in terms of aero, the only good thing about the F310 was the mechanical grip. The suspension setup and weight distribution were nice, other than that a complete failure. I always wished for him to partner Alesi as equal members, but Michael wouldn't have that.... hence why Jean left to Benetton. Such a shame as they would have been awesome and a wonder to watch!
According to John Barnard, after Michael drove both the V10 and V12 his feedback was he preferred the V12 because it had more engine braking and he could use this to maximise his corner entry speed… this was after Berger and Alesi spent the whole of 1995 telling Barnard the engine braking was too much and making the car unstable on corner entry. Meanwhile Berger and Alesi both crashed the 1995 Benetton in testing, describing it as ‘ugly’ to drive. Schumi had such a special talent.
I agree, the 96 season tells the full story. Both Alesi and Berger, good drivers I might add, struggled mightily in the B196, despite having the same engine as Williams and an upgraded aero compared to the B195 that Michael won the championship with. They played absolutely no role in the championship. Michael on the other hand finished third in a Ferrari that had many struggles. I think he would have given Hill and Villeneuve a run for the money in the B196, had he stayed.
Although true, but I read an article a long time ago about Alesi testing the B195 and setting a faster time than Michael did (at whatever track that was... Spain?) However, as Alesi did cope better than Berger in the B195, but it was more suited to Michael anyways since he was with the team since 1991....
@@marcusaureliusantoninusaug2161 Ross Brawn has said that Michael would have had a chance of winning the title with the B196. And I have no doubt that there is some truth in that.
Yes. The extra engine braking would cause a bit more rear instability when off throttle, (especially off throttle and under braking), which would allow for a faster rotation into the corner. Michael would also be able to manage that instability by combining throttle and brake inputs like he was known to do.

Michael was actually really impressed by Ferrari's V12. At the same time, he was not totally satisfied with the V10 which Ferrari was going to adopt the next year.
It was not up to Michael, it was a decision taken before he had actually driven the car, and after that it would be too late to cancel V10. Indeed there is a myth about Michael having said to the team, after tested the V12 for the first time, "how could you not win the championship with an engine like this?". Myth or reality? Yes I believe Michael said he preferred the increased engine braking with the V12. The 412T2 was a good car and the Ferrari V12 was the most powerful engine in 1995 so I’m not surprised he said he could have won the championship in it, but he wouldn’t have though because it had an awful habit of breaking down! As the great Murray Walker says, to finish first, first you have to finish.
I wonder why they didn't use a 412T2 with a V10 and one with V12. The 2 different chassis(T1B vs T2) make an already difficult comparison more complex.

He did indeed say that. The 95 Ferrari was quick though so it shouldn’t be a surprise, Alesi and Berger were both in contention for wins, the problem was it was incredibly unreliable. I think it would have suited Michaels driving style, it was quite tail happy. Pity he picked the V10 though. Apparently he said it had better drivability.
