This is SO helpful! I had an irrigation guy come and do some repairs on our outdoor system last spring and asked him to walk me through the process, but I couldn't find my notes!! This was the perfect run-thru to remind me what he said so that I could do it myself before our first freeze. Many thanks!

I just moved to greenville sc, and am wondering how to winterize or simply shut down my Hunter x core underground lawn sprinkler . I have a BIB valve in the garage and also a water controller at the edge of the yard. I was thinking that all I need to do is cut of the BIB valve in the garage. OR do I need to also cut off the water supply at the yard? Also is there a need to run any of the zones in the yard ( I have 6 zones on .30 acre) Thank you for any details.

Could you just turn off the supply to the irrigation system then turn in your sprinkler system till it stops spraying?

Hello, you could that would relieve the pressure, however, depending on how cold it gets the water could still freeze causing damage.

My system recommends leaving the controller in the AUTO or ON position for 2 weeks when winterizing. This is after you turn off the water supply and turn the peacocks/supply valves. Can you tell me why that would be?

Hello, I am not sure, the zones will drain out after the zones have been turned off through the automatic drain valves located on every zone.

All those valves your turned to 45 degrees, do you leave them like that all winter? Or do you fully close them?

Hello, keep them open all Winter long. Thank you for watching!

What’s the point of turning it 45 degrees?

@@chriszerep This allows for any trapped water remaining in the valves to drain out and to prevent any cracking due to freezing.

@@chriszerep that’s a Great question- im still looking for a good answer- the guy that first answered you doesn’t help. Like most ppl, his answer still begs the question, Why **45** degrees, why not **ALL** the way open (as many suggest doing).
There must be something about the construction of the interior of the valve that makes *some* people think 45 is Better than All the way open, but That’s the mystery. I bet only a handful of ppl really understand this detail :(

@@chriszerep There is a small pocket that collects water on the outside of the ball from where water drains when it is closed 90 degrees. Turning the valve 45 degrees helps to drain both the pipes and that pocket at the same time. Opening it a full 90 degrees would drain the pipe but leave that pocket sealed and prone to freezing still.
