    You should do a video of some old basic quality amp that's well used and change all the electrolytic caps on it and measure it before and after. I've heard some stories about vintage boomboxes where after a thorough cap replacement they're sounding absolutely amazing compared to the earlier stage.

    • @dextermorgan1
      @dextermorgan1 Рік тому +1

      No doubt that's true. We change the components on crossovers in home speakers all the time. It always sounds better after a recapping etc.

      No doubt. The Solen polypropylene and electrolyte capacitors in vintage Infinity cabinets were always out of spec. The "EMIT" tweeter would come alive after a recap.

    The tweeter is a piezo with a paper cone glued to it, they don't sound good.
    I had Kraco 140 Watt 2-Channel Power Amplifier - KA-5050, Box said it did 47 watts RMS. It was pushing a pair of 8 inch cerwin vega subs with Pioneer surface mount speakers on the dash in my old 71 duster I had in 93. Also had a Realistic shaft head unit and 7 band EQ.
    Fun car, Thanks for the flash back Big D

    I remember coming across these back in the day. To a young guy they had tempting looks and performance but that name kinda killed it . I couldn’t get caught popping the trunk and having a big red SUNKYONG in the middle of it.

    I think a lot of the times, and this includes me, we forget just how old the parts inside these are......and how old the technology of those parts are as well! I'm just glad the little guy turned on more less got close to it's ratings. Also, think about the age of the equipment used in the development and construction of this amp!
    I would say this is a win for this amp!

    • @chrishuyler3580
      @chrishuyler3580 Рік тому +1

      They built stuff with safer tolerances back then because they weren't trying to squeeze fractions of a cent on the assembly line. I kind of figured with the same rating at 4ohm and 2ohm we weren't going to reach the stated output at 4ohm. Nice to see dynamic power exceeded the rating at 2ohm though. I bet you could get a nice char on a steak with that heat sink after an hour of listening though.

    Had that exact amp on a Kicker box in like 1987-88. I forgot it even existed until I saw this video. I bought it new and I think all my friends ended up passing it around between them after I moved on to better stuff.

    This was my first amp I had in high school! Mine had SKE branding, older ones were like the one in the video. Local shop sold and installed them, they were cheap entry level amps, think I paid $200 new in 1991. I had it pushing 2 Kicker 12’s and it did a good job. I think I ran it for about 2 years, later upgraded to a Coustic Powerlogic 460.

    Reminds me of my old 150 watt Jet amplifier. One of those obscure brands from way back. It sounded really clean though. Even though it looked like it may of been one of those J.C. Whitney specials. 😅

    I had two of those. I used them to push two Cerwin Vega 12s in my Geo Metro. This was in 1989 I believe. Someone broke into my car and stole my stuff. They also got a Jensen 4 channel amp with a BBE circuit in it, and a 2 channel Kenwood amp. Bastards.

      I have a pair of speakers from the back of my '85 RX7 with similar construction and large format paper cone tweeter. Not the greatest quality sound, but they will play up to 20Khz with amazing efficiency. People are coming back around to the concept of wideband speakers. I bet coating them with mod podge might help tone down the sharpness...then do some tuning and hook them up with a quality passive or active crossover. It's fun to play around with old stuff using new tech.

    The Sunkyong units use a piezo plate that is connected to what looks like a tweeter unit, they do that because the piezo unit makes so little sound by itself, so you often have to cheat like this.
