He did an unrelated show about the history of a kings bed and authentication of it after centuries of being unknown. This man is a valuable asset to UK archaeology.

Thank you Time Team Official for letting us catch up with Jonathan Foyle. So much knowledge and passion he brings to the subject at hand, and the shared realization that history remains a living mystery.

Always enjoyed JFs insights. Concisely, expertly, eloquently delivered, beautifully drawn, with no discernable ego. A bloke I'd enjoy a beer with. I'd buy.

Jonathan is the epitome of what an academic 'really' is. Both uncertain, and also revealing in focusing their 'lens' on what they reveal. I do hope he features in future events. A really wonderful 'mind', and open to learn more. Top bloke, and a model Academic.

Now I'm going to have to get Jonathan's books. Had I known he's been writing I'd already have them. I always like how he looks at buildings, not as structures, but as places occupied by people. He appreciates the architecture, but has a knack of populating them with the people who lived and worked there. I remember "passing the meat" in the kitchens at the White House in Kew, one of so many examples from the shows where Jonathan brought life to the old stones.

Thank-you Dr. Foyle for mentioning the refreshing humility Time Team demonstrates when initial predictions have to be revised!
Seems to me you bring something equally refreshing to show … I hope you get involved on a few of the upcoming Time Team digs!

Dr Foyle would be such an asset to the team - even if it's on a 'specific site' basis. It's a joy to listen to such informed eloquence. Might he be persuaded to join? Actually, I doubt he'd need much persuading!

I am hoping this will make sense to you but it would be wonderful if an investigation could take place here in Builth; the castle, the Rocks field or Erwgilfach, or sorting out the myths/legends surrounding the battle of “Irfon” Bridge.

Personally one of my favourite guests on the show and such a wealth of knowledge Jonathon has. He was always very believable and engaging and brought a great deal of enthusiasm to the shows he did. I always thought that when he famously used the word “socking” (which was by far his trade mark quote) he was subsidising another word beginning with ‘F’... I’ll leave the rest to your imagination! Get this guy back on the Time Team 😃

Nice chap, obviously well educated, very articulate, and clearly extremely competent in his field. Archaeology is a broad discipline in terms of its geography, history and sociology, so I see that some will be interested in the self-indulgent building whims of post-medieval aristocrats. Not for me, but if if it is welcomed by others I will tug my forelock and retire.

  • @HannibalFan52

Science doesn't lie; it revises its position based on new evidence. Archaeology is a great example of that. I remember one episode on a Roman site in which Phil Harding thought what he was digging was one thing (perhaps a bath-house), changed his mind based on new evidence, then found further evidence to support his original theory. Science in a nutshell.

I remember watching, just a few days ago on the what was to have been a large house by Poppin that turned out to be totally something else, but the find there were sweet. Dr. Jonathan Foyle in his mention of Layer Marney, in Essex, is an awesome idea of a possible dig there, or his other site he was mentioning, The Clarendon Palace, in Wiltshire, an think he would be Perfect to step into Tony's shoes in presenting... Though I really miss Tony not doing it... Still Hoping to see him every now and then...

Actually St Paul's is not drowned by the surrounding buildings. I used to work right there in Paternoster Square. The idea of the City of London was to maintain the skyline, so St Paul's could be sen from afar. This stayed like that until 2008, when the Shard was built. Even then the immediate surroundings to St Paul's do not exceed the cathedral in height
