Mukul Bhatnagar We South Indians know the differentiation between Urdu and Hindi. Urdu have less Sanskrit words compare to Hindi. From Urdu ,Hindi formed by replacing some Persian and Arabic words using Sanskrit. But Hindi also having Persian and and Arabic words. Urdu written in Arabic format, Hindi written in Devnagiri script. This is the difference. Urdu came from Persia language and from Urdu , Hindi formed. Both language combinely called as hindustani. First of all North Indians show your patriotic on your mother tongue, then show patriot on Persian language hindi. If English is foreign language from western country, absolutely Hindi also foreign language from Persia. Give equal importance to all native languages in India.

+Ananth S Thank you very much for enlightening me about my mother tongue. Hindi has evolved from Apbransha, an ancient, corrupted form of Prakrit which itself was a corrupted form of Sanskrit. In medieval ages it became 'khari boli' which is and was spoken in Madhya Pradesh and Western UP. During the Islamic invasions and rule, first Turkic then Persian became the official language of the courts and administration and remained so till the mid 17th century, when Urdu came into being. Urdu, which was earlier known as 'Rekhta' (literal meaning- to draw, to derive) came into being when the muslim soldiers interacted with the local populace. It picked up the grammar and syntax of khadi boli and local dialects and adopted words from Persian, Arabic and Sankrit/Khadi Boli, justifying its name. Besides Urdu, Khadi Boli continued to be spoken in 17th, 18th and 19th century in the name of 'Hindavi' or 'Hindustani' despite being over shadowed by Urdu. An example of this could be cited when Bihar adopted 'Hindi' sometime in late 1880s as its official language differentiating with, and removing Urdu. When India became independent in 1947, Hindi was adopted as official language of India, and language of United Provinces (later Uttar Pradesh), Central India and Rajasthan.
Hindi is a highly evolved language, very much like the part its spoken in- going through massive political, cultural and socio-political upheavals. Before south indians tell us which language to show patriotism to, they should learn that their own languages- tamil, kannada and telugu have heavily borrowed words from Sanskrit, Sinhala (which are both north Indian Aryan languages), Persian and Arabic. Please do not create a wishful opinion about a language that you do not understand/speak/know.

I am a Malayali that has spent 46 of my 54 yrs. in the US. Thus, I am fluent in English and can speak rudimentary Malayalam. Whenever I see an Indian in the US, they instinctively approach me and speak in Hindi. I explain that I don't speak Hindi and they seem outraged. Some then ask if I am Indian or ask why I don't speak Hindi. Then they say if I am Indian, I should learn Hindi. India is a collaboration of various states, each with its own language, culture, and traditions. It has been my experience that most educated people in India speak English. Why would N. Indians impose their language on people that have their own language and values? Why are N. Indians not learning Tamil if they want to live or do business in Tamil Nadu? One of the primary reasons why Bangladesh (E. Pakistan) broke away from Pakistan was because they demanded that they speak Urdu. If people want to learn Hindi, fine, but don't try and enforce your language on others.

    • @jayendrang

Moron, go and read about bangladesh revolution. In 1948, Governor-General Muhammad Ali Jinnah declared that "Urdu, and only Urdu" would be the federal language of Pakistan.[32][33] However, Urdu was historically prevalent only in the north, central, and western region of the subcontinent; whereas in East Bengal, the native language was Bengali, one of the two most easterly branches of the Indo-European languages.[34] The Bengali-speaking people of Pakistan constituted over 30% of the country's population. The government stand was widely viewed as an attempt to suppress the culture of the eastern wing. The people of East Bengal demanded that their language be given federal status alongside Urdu and English. The Language Movement began in 1948, as civil society protested the removal of the Bengali script from currency and stamps, which were in place since the British Raj.

If we want to unite India let it be with Hindi which is accepted among all the communities except South India.
Why South Indians are not willing to be integrated to our society ? If a tamilian comes to north India to live there, will it be possible without Hindi ? Stop being so narrow minded, we respect your language, therefore respect Hindi please. And if you don’t let it be, but you won’t be considered as Indian.
If you hate so much our language then why don’t you separate from us ?

Multi-regional, unlike any other Indian languages as they are restricted to one State more or less. Also, apart from Hindi Belt, most people in states like Punjab, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and to some extent Bengal & Orissa, can all speak fluent Hindi. In fact over 50% of the country can speak good Hindi, and over 40% call it their mother tongue. It only makes sense to use it as the link language over English, or any other Indian language. Language is just a tool, you tool. This coming from a half-Sindhi, half-Punjabi, born & brought up in Gujarat, whose mother tongue is Saraiki.

Siva, people also say English is an international language, though the constitution of UN doesn't say so anywhere. But the fact is, since it is an international lingua franca, we call it an 'international language'. Also, it's constitution of the US, UK or Australia doesn't mention English as an official or a national language, but it is a de facto official or national language of those countries. Same thing goes about Japan, where constitution doesn't declare Japanese an official language, but it's a de facto official or national language there. This way, Hindi is our de facto national language, though the constitution doesn't say so.

      @amitshah9355 9 років тому

So how do you want to connect the country without establishing a language as a link language? If the country is such diverse, there's a need for something common to make it a nation, we need a common language to communicate with each other, there are other multi lingual countries in this world, where they have established a particular language as a link language. So India will never give a special privilege to it's few states, if the entire world follows this trend, our country is no different to them.

Knowing more languages is always a plus in commercial business life. Hindi can be seen as unifying language for the whole of India. This can be since in countries like China, Malaysia, etc where there is a national language define to tap our top communication barrier. Sometime change may be hard to accept but one must be adaptable to change for growth.

For hindi speaking people , it is mother tongue and for us it is foreign language. In any competition there should be level playing field for justice / unbiased competition. More importantly non hindi speaking people will become second class citizens .

Moreover English is a useful language and ensures a good career, a better paying job and access to the global economy. If the RSS feels that they can sneakingly impose their agenda systematically in a phased manner across India they are going to be sorry as we the southerners are not going to be fooled so easily. We down the south are thrived because of our own languages and English as the link language and we don't intent to change it. Let's face it English is the language of Power which every aspiring Indian wants to master.

    Learn English & State Language.
If you go to any other other country you learn the language of that country. You have no problem there.
Why? when people from Hindi Speaking regions go to Non-Hindi Speaking states demand the locals to speak Hindi rather than leaning the local language.
Will they accept of a Non Hindi speaking person goes to Hindi States and demands them to speak his language will they accept?
Remember, India is a country of Regional Languages , Hindi is one such Regional Language.

If one wishes to go to a non Hindi speaking state for a tourism or for any purpose for a short period, then anyway they have english, which is the common and linking language.
The question, does every street vendor or the touring person know English. Well !! Then why do we have a school for and mandatory minimum schooling for through out the country.
It is the failure of the government if it fails to achieve 100% minimum schooling in the country.
The real issue here to understand is not to force anyone to lean a particular language. The business dictates the need to learn.
Personally I have no hatred towards any language. Country is just fine with its current set up. Don't need any particular language as a national language.

Hindi and then local language. So there cannot be one rule for Hindi people so that they will learn Hindi and English and for others the burden is to learn two Indian languages.
