Lapis, and the Witch's FEAR

  • This time around, we talk about how Lapis Lazuli's arc reflects the Witches of Ohtori Academy, including Anthy Himemiya, the series' dual-protagonist, and Shiori, a girl who's relationship with an imposing orange suitor eerily inverts Lapis' own relationship with Jasper. Er. I suppose Lapis' arc would be the inversion.
Next time, we talk about one of the great literary marvels of anime--the friendship between Anthy Himemiya and Utena Tenjou, and how it, too, reflects certain dynamics in Steven Universe back at us: The relationships of Rose Quartz and Pearl, and Steven and Connie.
    Til then, keep rising.

A great and very thoughtful essay OD,, I loved Lapis because of the fact she was essentially a trauma victim and that made me sympathize wit her. Though Jasper and Lapis's relationship shares one major difference from Juri and Shiori, Namely the fact that Lapis and Jasper have a very violent, abusive, and toxic relationship Malachite's unstable nature is a testament to that fact. Even worse is that Jasper becomes essentially addicted to fusion because she found the feeling of being under the thumb of someone else to be pleasurable forcing others to fuse with her which ultimately lead to her corruption.

The witch role in Utena is talked about like it's feminine, but I feel like that's almost a misdirect. Akio, Touga, Ruka, and Souji all play it perfectly well and Anthy is arguably at her witchiest when she's Mamiya.

Yup! The gendering of the behavior is just another means of social control, really. All of these things that seem very cleanly tied to gender in the cultural consciousness inevitable get more muddled and specific as we get down to the nitty gritty of actual people with relationships figuring out how to live their lives. That's part of the beauty of it, in my opinion!

Isn't the point of the role of the witch that it's feminine? I feel like the witch role in utena is meant to represent how those seen as women are negatively stereotyped in real life using similarly black and white boxes (e.g. the madonna/whore complex). I feel like it's on purpose that there is no role for men other than the prince, to deliberately show how men can hurt people (especially ones that society considers feminine) with a kind of social impunity. All the characters you mention above are presented as some kind of prince in terms of ohtori academy and are the ones with the most status, and while the audience may learn more about them and see their negative characteristics I think it's important that pretty much almost none of them (barring saionji but only after he pisses off akio and he comes back later as well) lose their status as princes of ohtori despite how visible their bad behavior. Saionji hits anthy in public, Touga is a known womanizer, but they're both still the most popular boys at the school. I also think its definitely interesting how despite benefitting from the prince role how nobody seems to fit it (at least not for very long), just like how witches aren't entirely evil.

@@nano-ch7645It’s complicated. Accusations of witchcraft were key to the mass murder of women, but in countries like Iceland witchcraft was seen as a man’s thing. Odin was a god of witchcraft, albeit while dressed as a female mystic.

OH GOD I JUST REALIZED WHY YOU CANT HATE PINK DIAMOND IF YOU DONT HATE ALL THE DIAMONDS
she was raised to believe people like Spinel are inferior then her (AS WD HERSELF HAS SAID "INFERIOR LIFE FORMS") so it would be okay to abandon her
taking her as the only one to blame is like condeming a pitbull that was trained to kill bc it harmed someone. Of course the dog is to blame and should be punished but THEIR OWNER IS THE CAUSE OF THE CRIME

Utena isn't there, so she couldn't have left with her.
But Ikuhara basically confirmed in the movie commentary that Ohtori Version 2 is the new world Utena ended up in. Anthy found her at last, and the rest of our core students found their own ways to escape and move on as well. So it IS a happy ending, even if the outside world is scary.

@@optimisticDuelist - As someone that liked rebellion, I didn't actually hate the ending. Homura isn't the kind of person to back down from achieving her goals, and she could be very easily likened to being a witch like Shiori and Anthy. She wasn't exactly the, uh, _most_ sane character after the events of the anime series, so it makes sense for her to purposely cause the events of rebellion since she was the one that told Kyubey about the grief seed system, knowing he would take the bait and experiment on a magical girl to try and get a grief seed.
tl;dr, The rebellion ending has parallels to Utena's witch concept, Homura fighting and suffering from the system that keeps killing Madoka, and even after the reset she's still trapped in that cycle

They both feel like they don't fit in around the people they love, but they're there for moral support and a voice of reason (sometimes) as well as some comedic moments and an under-utilized potential.

I have mixed feelings about Anthy, but it’s obvious that she is suffering under Akio, abused and manipulated by him, and it’s obvious that she cares about Utena-though, perhaps not enough. For those who hate her and say she is the villain, I would ask why the happy ending is hers? I thought while watching the show that good would probably triumph over evil, but that there wouldn’t be a happy ending. Good only kind of triumphed over evil, but there WAS a happy ending! As Anthy walked away from Ohthori, I was so estatic even after she betrayed Utena for the second time!

See, I would agree with you. If it wasn't for a big glaring issue. That issue is that this is a shallow comparison at best.
The reason I don't agree is because while both relationships are toxic? This completely ignores that BOTH lapis and jasper were BOTH abusers and victims.
Which ISN'T the case in revolutionary girl utena. Juri was solely a victim (of both shiori and ruka) and shiori was the abuser and later got a heavy dose of karma.

I like the misdirect of when the boys play the witch/bride role, but even those misdirects have the end goal of being played in the name of goodness. Ruka is my personal favorite example - at the start you don't know what his deal is, but by the time he's bowing out of the show it's obvious what he wanted for Juri, even if he had to play Shiori AND Juri to make Juri see it too. Long Live Good Witches.
