    I remember as a little kid growing up in Brooklyn NY our old three story house was all wood clapboard and had to be painted every couple of years. the painters had four section extension ladders, wood, heavy. they'd be up at the top, paint out as far as they could reach, swing their hips and walk the ladder sideways and paint some more, they were about 40 ft up. Folks think that all NYC is apartments but out in the boroughs there are a lot of single family. This was right after WW2.

    Taking a full can of paint up a ladder is asking for trouble. we always decant some paint into a painters kettle, much lighter. Many years ago I asked one of the guys where he got his hook from and he said it was a wreath hook, the kind you use when hanging up a Christmas wreath over a door. That was over 30 years ago and I still use the same hooks today. Nice tip Leah thanks for sharing.

    My grandfather taught me a few things and one was taking a nail and making holes around the inner lip of the paint can that way the paint would drip back into the can. He also said to exhale into a paint can when closing it and due to the carbide dioxide in your breath won’t cause a film on the paint that you stored. It works I tried them both. Thanks for the video

    Disaster is not quite strong enough. You're looking at a clean up that won't get done on the 1st or 10th pass. You'll find paint well into the following years that wasn't discovered at the incident, and now is much harder to remove. That gizmo saves you psychological well being. Don't ask how I know. LOL! Another great video Leah

    That is exactly what I did tonight! I came looking for how to clean my ladder. It’s a mess! I used a plant hanger. Did t think about putting it on the side of the ladder. What I did was drop my ladder down a notch which knocked the paint can off the hook. Thank goodness it only had about an 1/8th if a can of primer in it (mold killing at about $60 a gallon) and two that I had some plastic down. But the rest? All over my already painted siding and patio! I grabbed a bucket and dish soap and went scrubbing. What a mess! Going to get a hook tomorrow. Thanks Leah!

    Thanks Leah - those small tips are the best. I watched that video just minutes before helping my dad to paint his house. Attaching the can on the side I hold the brush made things so much easier. Completely obvious once I saw it, but still something I wouldn't have discovered on my own before messing up my ladder.

    Thank you so much. I painted a few big houses to make ends meet when I was in college, but now that I'm a retired home owner, I'm doing my own maintenance. I picked up one of those gallon-can hooks at the big-box store, thinking it will help while painting my new fascia boards, but thought I would just hook it over a rung. Glad I found your video before I started. Draping the can over the side is a great tip! Thank you so much!

    Most ladders have a hollow rung (not all). Another tip you can use is to install a large dowel thru the rung plus 8" and hang your bucket on that. I always put a through screw at the end just in case your ladder is tilted.

    OH Leah. Been there done that. I was painting a friends trim one time and i used a coat hanger to told my paint. I went up the ladder to his third level windows and everything as going fine, till went up farther on the ladder and some how I caught the end of the hanger with my belt and straightened it out enough to slip off the ladder. ONE FULL GALLON of white paint all over the lawn. furniture. table, walls and windows . What a mess. I rusd down and ran to the garage for the power washer. That goodness for water base paint. I was able to clean it all up. But it took me hours and the loss of paint plus the day of painting. I will to get me a hook or two.
    Thanks for the tip. ( a year too late).

    +seejanedrill get a Wooster pelican paint holder drill 2 thin holes on the top sides of it right in the middle, then take a paint handle off A can and hook it through the holes. Now when you need to paint you have two options one for a brush and two for your mini roller and that little hook is complimenting that. FAST AND NEAT.

    They had had those for 25yrs most painters put em on 5 gal buckets so we can usa a roller and a brush depends on the surface. With a sprayer you stick the brush in a ladder rung.

    There's a way to grip the gallon with one hand and still be able to use that hand to cimb with paint can in hand. Hold it like a soda can and hook the pails handle over your thumb. Ideally you don't want to have a full gallon doing this. It will leave a mark but it goes away and doesn't hurt.

    Leah you know in late 90s internet there werent life hacks but their was a guy in hsn or something called Haleys hints which showed a lot of tips and tricks which im sure have been replicated called life hacks. One was to wipe in foaming shaving cream on your mirror to keep from fogging when showering.. Another which applies to this is he ran a rubber band vertically in the middle of his paint can so you dont have to wipe excess off the side. Works great.
    Another tip was for pickpockets and using a pocket comb in the middle of your wallet as an anchor/catch on your pocket.
    Sorry your hanging paint can and edge wiping reminds me of him

      Jed Knutson I remember this from way before the ‘90’s...the rubber band went completely around the paint can when the lid was removed so it’s perpendicular to the handle. One would swipe the tips on the rubber band instead of knocking it on the side of the can.

    • @jocbaker

    Do you have any videos where you address the best ways to get on and off a ladder? I have an RV and really need to get on the roof but I'm concerned with making the transitions from the ladder to roof and roof to ladder. Thanks for all your great content.

    • @nedwelch1471
      @nedwelch1471 6 років тому +3

      Knut Blaise I agree!
      13 months ago I was making the transition from ladder to roof and the ladder kicked out from under me, I was literally grabbing shingles and praying! The Good Lord saw a reason for me to live! I only crushed the bones in both hands, wrist and arms. 40+/- pieces of shattered bones. I will spare you the rest of the details. Bottom line is safety on the ladder, don’t worry about the couple hundred $ in paint & cleanup, I’m in a couple hundred thousand $$$ and more surgeries to come. This is not a pity story, I hope this helps anyone from tragedy.
      Please please be careful ! Thanks

    • @CrankyPantss
      @CrankyPantss 6 років тому

      That's the scary part for me, too. Going up and down on the ladder is no problem. Walking around on the roof, also no problem. That transition from ladder to roof and roof to ladder has always scared me, though.

    • @elained2448
      @elained2448 6 років тому +2

      Keep the ladder extended about 3 feet past the roof deck. Make sure the legs are level on the ground. They make leg levelers for extension ladders. Don’t carry lots of tools in your hands, use a bucket and a rope. Keep your weight centered between the legs going up and down. When you step off the ladder, don’t use the ladder to push off, especially if it’s not tied off. When getting all your weight from ladder to roof, hold the leg down, don’t pull it towards you. It’s more natural to push down on the leg when you are getting on the ladder from the roof, don’t push too hard on one side. Just balance. And if you’re wearing carpenter pants with a hammer by the leg, step off towards the hammer ;). We just tied ladders from the middle of the rung on to a gutter spike. You don’t want to trip on the rope. It’s just to keep the ladder from falling if it’s kicked when you step off. Always a good idea to have another person on the ground. And if that person is steadying the ladder, don’t carry anything that can drop on their heads. They can toss the rope up to you.

    • @rongollonik7754
      @rongollonik7754 6 років тому +1

      NEVER step on a ladder rung that is higher than the roof level. If you do this, your weight will cause the top of the ladder to pivot towards the roof and the bottom legs of the ladder will pivot up. Since the ladder is not supported on the ground, you will hit the ground unless you are lucky enough to have something to hold on to.
      Again, Never step on a ladder rung that is above the roof level.
