    Would like to see Native Americans vitalize their reservations by growing industrial hemp and producing hemp products. It would improve the land and give many tribe members much needed employment and income. Various tribes could join to create their own Native American Textile Mill, though hemp oil and other products could be produced as well.

      Truth be told, this goes back to William Randolph Hearst and Henry Ford and the early '30's. Hearst made deals with co.'s to harvest trees for paper. While the hemp was illegal in US, their army did use hemp fiber bags :-)

    Good video, nice message. The material properties of the plant has been know for decades, it has two hurdles: social and economic. Productions like this go a long way twoards addressing the social perception of this plant, but the economics are the primary limiting factor still. To say "you can do this" is great, but the economics do still matter. Comparing hemp vice a conventional material, conventional usualy wins due to how the agricultural production, processing, and logistics is configured. The future question is, can it be produced economically and delivered a larger profit margin than the conventional competition. That is why "sustainable agriculture" theory places economics as one of the pillars.
    Again though, great video. I just think it's a rose tinted portrayal.

    All of these uses and benefits of hemp are wonderful. But, for everyone to use it in today's world, it must be mass produced in large, habitat devastating monocultures. If everyone were required to grow it, then we wouldn't have to clear such large swaths of land for it. If people were paid to grow it and the harvests were collected by municipalities, it could also be supplemental income for people. But when it comes down to it, limiting population growth is the most important path toward sustainability.

    Something awesome about hearing that guy in the overalls talk about enlightenment. I feel like this information age we are living in, with all the problems it's causing, will be seen as the second age of enlightenment. I hope Hemp and the Cannabis plant in general, become a big part of our country again.

    When hemp cleans the soil it is uptaking heavy metals. Those metals are now in the plant. What happens to the metals after processing the plant?

    • @lancewalker6067
      @lancewalker6067 4 роки тому

      They remain in the plant until it biodegrades or are removed during its processing into other products.

    As a farmer, the most important take away is to not just keep repeating the same production methods with hemp. Unfortunately i saw many images of large hemp fields and unfortunately this is anthother example of monoculture. I commend Patagonia for participating in this endeavor to bring better fabrics but until industry realizes that agriculture is a holistic practice between many different ecosystem. The mass production of hemp, organic or not, is still leadinf down the same road.

      @@patagonia the challege when it come to integrating ecological farming with our modern economic systemis that for example it is not efficient for a company like Patagonia to purchace raw material from many small farms. At the same time using a distribution model also does not work for farmers. Please continue this conversation as you folks can infuence a large segment of the population.

    I grew up in middle Nebraska where hemp now grows wild. Yes, I thought I could get high from it but, seriously, you would have to smoke till your lungs get black to get even a mild buzz. Believe me, as a bored teenager in Nebraska farmlands I was eager for fun and I did try, but nothing. I had no idea why we used to grow it and why it became illegal.

    5.23 alone makes this a better alternative, as we routinely grow hemp in 5-8 month rotations we would effectively remove a ton of oxygen as a byproduct. its an industry worth cutting plastic for! #All4It

    Hemp "marijuana" was outlawed in 1937 in the U.S. In Canada it was outlawed in 1923. Today, Canada has legalized cannabis for all purposes. Industrial hemp missed the industrial revolution due to prohibition. THAT was the "criminal act". Food, clothing, shelter, fuel, plastics, paper, carbon sequestration.... the list goes on & on.
