I had a battery that would completely drain overnight. Took it back to the bike shop, they couldn’t find the cause and replaced the battery. It was fine for a while, then exactly the same problem happened again. I finally worked out what the problem was - instead of the batteries being installed in the seat post using the plastic shims that wedge them in place, the shop had just dropped them down the seat tube. The battery moved about during rides and transport and loosened the connection to the wire, resulting in battery drain. After I’d properly installed the battery, the problem never happened again. Also, when I travel with my bike I disconnect the junction box (mine is an external one) to prevent battery usage if a shifter gets pressed.

Ah-yes. Good advice to check the wire connections to the battery. Since it’s a pain to access, a lot of riders may not check that. Thanks for
      Commenting.

I love my Dura-Ace Di2 9170. I love my Gamin 840, Varia Radar, and Epix Watch. I love my Bluetooth Earbuds. And I carry my smart phone. I have a Garmin Speed sensor and Cadence sensor too. All these things require batteries and or regular charging. I'm getting sick of it to be honest. Tech is nice to have but requires me putting a lot more thought into my bike now than I ever used to do. I can't just grab the bike out of the garage when it's been sitting all week and expect everything to work. Life on the bike was so much better back 15 years ago or more.

Yeah, that's a good point. When I travel, it feels like half my luggage is cycling devices and charging cables :) It can get even worse on the mountain bike side, with SRAM's Flight Attendant system requiring two additional batteries, plus a wireless dropper post adding another.

I have had 2 issues with Di2 over the past 4 years. The first was my fault. Forgot to recharge the battery. I managed to make it back with about 5% remaining. I had to reduce the number of shifts by about 90%. The second happened this year and of all things the front derailleur cable became disconnected. At least the rear still shifted. After the first time when the battery died, I pay fairly close attention these days.

Hi Mike, my Di2 battery of 2024 Defy 12 speed 105 bike drains quickly whenever I transport it with a commute of 2 hrs + .. what are your thoughts ? Would you be able to have a quick look at it if we meet up in Toronto ? Thoughts ?

I'd love to help, but me looking at it won't solve the issue or diagnose the problem. Like I said in my video, I'm not sure what causes the Di2 to stay awake sometimes while transporting a bike. I don't think anyone has figured it out. Maybe the movement of the bike itself is enough to cause the Di2 to stay awake and go into overdrive. I doubt any of these are the cause of your issue, but I'd do the following:
      1) Make sure nothing is actively paired to the Di2 during transport (like a phone with the eTube app or a cycle computer)
      2) If using a bike bra / bike cover, make sure they are not pressing on any shifters or shifter buttons.
      3) Make sure your bike is secured to your rack really well to limit the amount of movement.
Beyond that, I'd just get into the habit of checking your Di2 battery level after long drives.

@@bikesbymikethanks Mike, I have been making sure all the things that are listed in your reply. However still the di2 battery of my bike drains while transporting. Looks like there is no solution other than to charge it again before riding !

@@amritv6889 Yeah. This issue confuses me to no end. One other long shot I just thought about as I was using my eTube app: In the "Multi-shift" option, set the number of continuous shifts to something less than "unlimited." I set mine to 3. Just in case the Di2 gets stuck trying to change gears, it'll max out at 3 instead of trying to shift until the battery is drained.

@@bikesbymike great idea, will try this as well and let you know the outcome though I am not planning to transport the bike anytime soon!

I have had my bike for a few months and my shimano 105 di2 left shifter all the suddenly said low battery on my Garmin Edge 840.. the right shifter was full but the left shifter was red.. the main di2 battery seem to be halfway which was about where it had been. Strange

Advantage of SRAM is that you can carry a spare battery with you or swap shifter and derailleur batteries for emergency return without shfting in the front.

Yup. I just bought a spare AXS battery for my mountain bike.

7 failures in 14 years is not an endorsement for me of electronic shifting. I don't experience anything close to that failure rate with mechanical shifting, and if something is amiss, I can diagnose and deal with it. Seems much harder to do that with e-shifting.

    • @bikesbymike
      @bikesbymike  Місяць тому

True. Something to be said for the simplicity of mechanical groupsets. Plus, you don’t have the regular bother of charging multiple batteries.
By far, the greatest advantage of going electronic over mechanical is consistent, repeatable, smooth shifts. I’d be unlikely to have one missed shift a year with Di2. With the cable stretch inherent with mechanical systems, regular adjustment of shifter cables is unavoidable.
