I watched this whole interview wondering if they were going to mention Townsend's film "Hollywood Shuffle", which deals with the same restrictions imposted on Black artists, except they are imposed on Black actors rather than Black authors. At the very last moment Jefferson mentions the movie and says that he saw it when he was eight.
If you have not seen the "Black Actors School" scene in that movie and love "American Fiction," treat yourself. It's a painfully funny scene, and very much a predecessor of some of the scenes in AF.
