It's not my go to but I've been trying to use it more recently. I've always heard it's the best bait to use and it makes sense, almost every fish I've kept from the surf has sand crabs in it's stomach. But I prefer using a carolina rig with a paddletail grub. I fish around HMB and up to Ocean beach.
@@truoutdoors I only fish for 1.5-2 hours at a time and hate to spend 1 hour searching for sand crabs. I frequently fish Francis and less at Montara (because of parking). Lots at various Santa Cruz beaches.
Ya, if I only have time for a short session, then I'll just use a carolina rig or lures. It doesn't take me too long to find sand crabs though. I get 1-2 to get my rod casted out and spend 5-10 minutes finding some to use for the day. I haven't had much luck at Francis. Santa Cruz is good but further away.
Where?
Sand crab is your go to bait? What general areas do you fish?

What pound line do you use and what length rod?
30lb braid main line and 20lb mono leader. I have a 11ft rod and a 9'6" rod.

Np. You should definitely try, it's a lot of fun. The fishing is great in the summer too.
