Back when I used to record bands, on my desk I had a little metal box with a single knob on it labelled "More". When I had to record guitarists, I would plug them through it, tweak the knob while they were getting their sound and warming up, and tell them I have to go pee or make coffee or whatever, just keep warming up, don't touch anything else. I would get back and inevitably, the knob was in a different position. It did nothing. It was always the only thing they changed, because it looked like "Magical voodoo equipment." Great way to ensure they left all your actual settings.
That's a good hack for guitarists. When I was recording my bachelor degree track, the guitarist was changing their settings the most lol, even tho I asked them not to do it
Now THAT's what I call "transparent overdrive".
😂 😂
But on a more serious note, there *are* things that people try out in stores, not knowing enough about how they work, and ask "Is this thing even on?", because they expect something as obvious as a fuzzbox. They may have insufficient understanding of how compressors or limiters work and expect to hear a more obvious effect than a really good compressor provides.
The poster child for me was "exciter" pedals: the descendant of the Aphex Aural Exciter - a classic studio tool of the '80s. The provide a "crisper than crisp" sound out of acoustic instruments and some electric instruments, but require that you feed them a signal that already has lots of top end in order to do what they do, and feed their result to a sound system that can reproduce top end. Several companies, including Boss, produced them, and as products they all tanked. People would come into a store, plug a guitar with humbuckers into one, and plug that into an amplifier whose speaker rolls highs off above 6khz. They strum, get a puzzled and frustrated look, assume the pedal doesn't "do" anything, and put it on permanent ignore.
literally a $100 light switch... for a single green LED... I love it!
😂 basically!!!
Worth it
Wholesome video. Guy tries to prank woman, woman understands it is a prank right out of the box and they both have a good laugh...
They should follow up with a "nocebo" pedal that makes noises even when nothing is plugged into it.
😂 😂
I could swear this produces a real natural sound.
😂♡
The tone with this pedal is incredibly clear and crisp.
😂
Transparent even.
Her reaction when he surprises her with the pedal ❤
Also, you guys should do a video of Emily saying the word "caution" through different effects pedals!
Lmfao Fed!!! That’s my Long Island accent!!!
@@emilyharpist It's adorable 😊
Dosage and Side-FX are perfect names for controls on a real pedal though. I don’t know why I haven’t saw it used before.
I agree!!! So clever
Maybe as a rotary reverb? Dosage controlling level/mix and Side-FX controlling speed? Just spitballing ideas.
If I stupidly bought that I couldn't sell or display it or even let anyone know. But what do I know. 1 of my 1st pedals for my board is a used Alchemy modded Blues Driver. But so many said the Keeley and the Waza Crap are so good that when I ran into great deals I bought them. Now they're sitting on the shelf and the Alchemy is still on my board. Just to be sure I also bought a stock 1. 4 of the same but different pedals. The good news between the 3 not on my board, I barely spent $200. So if I ever decide to sell anything I know I'll get my money back. I'm just slowly building up enough to have a Josh wall. L O L
Looks like what this pedal does is unlock the joy in all our hearts!
I'd like to see some people who don't know what it is using it though - there's gonna be people who really start appreciating their sound and the music they're playing more, just because they're paying more attention to it and putting themselves in another space. I bet there are a lot of success stories!
Follow up video - blindfolding people to see if they can tell the difference
I would just think the battery is low.
This hasn't left me with joy in my heart it has left me in a murderous rage.
A rage that will only be quenched by the un-alivening of James Corden.
It definitely provides warmth overall! Looooook
@@emilyharpist great idea
Russ: It's a surprise
Emily: Well I don't like that
This is the relatable content I'm here for :D
So what you're saying is, Emily does NOT have a third arm that comes out of her knee occasionally?
I'm utterly devastated.
Haha! I was wondering about that, too. I thought maybe she recorded the dry signal, then went back and played the sound through the pedal while making adjustments. Now we know she has an accomplice!
😂😅
That is a Big Clive-worthy teardown, but I would've liked to see a full circuit diagram. :D
😂 I wish they included a manual that included circuit info, best I could do was open it up and show whats inside!!
Blow up a photo and print it out. Always works for Big Clive.
I would love to see Big Clive react to this pedal. I can already almost hear what he's saying.
Yes, Big Clive could help but may need a suite of advanced tools
There is the pcb schematic pdf on the daredevil pedals website.
The clean tone was legit
I imagine lots of guitarists would use these, insisting they make their tone better. Reminds me of "clean boost" pedals
😂 😂
It does have a certain Spinal Tap appeal.
I can see Nigel using one with his wireless rig.
😉
Clean boosts at least add volume for solos, even if that can be done with other things
"Cos it's a surprise"
"Well I don't like that."
Fun video.
You gotta do this with the Korg Miku pedal, i would LOVE to see Emily's reaction to that
Hahaha Miku was one of the first pedals I tried!! Check it out! :) ua-cam.com/video/XGHu6K2ED4w/v-deo.html
@@emilyharpist the Miku is a weird pedal IMO it’s a terrible guitar pedal ( but it’s absolutely a KILLER Keyboard pedal )
The one where we learn that Emily's love language is gifts
I'm really liking what that does to the high-end frequencies, really adds a certain "air" to the sound.
I'm a big fan of your handseseseses work Russ.
Great compliment to Emily's wonderful playing.
The DOSAGE effect cracked me up, ain't gonna lie 😂
LMAO I love it.
I guess you guys have already found the best pedal ever, CASE CLOSED.
04:40 OMG 😂😂😂 OKAAAAAAAAAAAY
PS: THE DEMONSTRATION AT THE END IS A GEM 😂😂
OMG, I'm done.
🤣 lmao im so glad you enjoyed this as much as I did!!! Best pedal ever
I have never seen a review as detailed as this as to what a piece of gear does. A true benchmark in demo history- bravo!
Started out giggling at the beginning, in tears of laughter by the end. Best. Pedal. EVER.
🤣 thanks so much for being here!! I had so much fun filming this hahaha
Laughed so hard with y’all! Thanks
What's funny is that when he plugs it in, it does basically sound like an empty box. But I love how the power is actually used for the LED and the footswitch
Poor Emily, she looked so excited when she heard the news.
Man Daredevil is about to EXPLODE 😂😂😂 it’s the magic sauce we all need....a dose of “exactly what we already have”
🤣 🤣 I’m so glad they made this
"True Bypass"!! lol
Thank you both for the laugh this morning 🙏❤🙏
I needed that!
The Placebo Pedal may not have an effect on your tone, but the joy it brings is worth it
This was fantastic! I would love to see more artists review it.
Thank you!!! And same :)
Great clean sound, thanks.
I think I like it best with the dosage up at 2 and the side fx down around 10 or so. That's my sound right there.
This is what the doctor ordered indeed. 😆 I love whoever thought up this pedal idea!
Too bad we didn’t actually see you blindfold test it; I’m curious to see what you would have done!
I've been waiting to not hear the Placebo for weeks now. Very transparent! Sounds great!
"Wait a minute! I know that hand. It was in the Fall 1973 Bulova watch catalog. You're J.P. Prewitt, the world's greatest hand model!"
Love that warm vintage tone😌
This is the most natural sounding pedal I've ever heard. Great review!!!
A much needed laugh this afternoon! That's awesome!
What a beautiful tone.
that 42 inside of it though. the answer to life, the universe, and everything
What a coincidence- I bought a homeopathy pedal recently. I found that the lower I set the level, the more the effect worked. And, I used it for a bit, but then removed it from my pedal board, but the board retained the memory of the pedal being there and it still worked
Excellent tone with a balanced midrange and high end sparkle.
This is phenomenal
Thanks for the wide grin and big chuckles. Lol, I love that she knew what it was instantly.
Thanks so much for being here and watching!!
I loved this. Made me laugh right along with you. Thanks!
Such a clean circuit.
Fun fun fun video. There's so much room inside the box. It makes a great secret hiding place.
I’m gonna definitely hide stuff in it!!! Great idea!
Perfect pedal for true bypass switch test! Loved the video, "just for fun" is good sometimes!! 😁😜
😂 you’re so right!! And this was so much fun :) thanks for being here!!
That was absolutely awesome!
I kind of want this pedal now.
This would be a great gag gift for any musician, providing you have an extra $100 you just want to throw into The Ether.
When your friends birthday is coming up and they have been struggling with their tone, it’s a good gift idea!!! Hahahaha thanks so much for being here!
@@emilyharpist Haha! That's perfect.
It sounded pretty good at the end! Love that t shirt.
😂 thanks so much!!!! The shirt is from Mattoverse!!!
I prefer my Placebo in the effects loop. Really tightens up my sound.
Sugar for the Pill...
Against my gear aquistion syndrome.
That's the perfect platform to build a sketchy "home remedy" from random parts you've got laying around.
Loving this.
Love The Shirt!
This made me smile so much 😂
😊 ❤️
I love this channel. ❤️
😊 ❤️
I have an idea for some episodes. I’d love to see you do a run down of your actual pedal board that you use for gigs.
Also it’s be cool to see you guys do some videos with vintage or discontinued pedals. I have a Digitech Spacestation and I’d love to hear the harp on it.
thank you so much for the suggestion!! I'd love to do a "what's on my board" video soon!!
Finally, a pedal worthy of my talent.
He paid how much?!?! I know it’s supposed to be a joke but at least they should let you apply what he paid for one of their other pedals when the joke wears thin lol! Awesome that you figured it out right away!
Hahah I KNOW 😂😂😂 this is why I hate surprises
they do provide a pcb for a fuzz pedal
EMILY CANNOT BE FOOLED!!!!!!!
amazing pedal
AWESOME upload!
Thank you!!! 😊
During these times of drama and stress, a little laughter is much needed medicine.....wishing you all the best, from a remote area of Canada....
This sparks joy.
😊 ❤️
That was funny. 😆 For some real fun, I suggest trying the JPTR FX "Fernweh" Delay pedal. Enjoyment will be immediate. 😎
he didnt pay 1oo bucks for a pedal
he payed 1oo bucks for a smile.
and that is a-o-kay in my books.
I like that the footswitch doesn't have a loud pop on the signal chain.
Having the option to make it a functional pedal is pretty cool. You get the gag, then you can actually use it too. Thanks for uploading, gave me a chuckle on a rough day.
I agree!! I kind of wish Russ spent the extra $25 but I think he was trying to avoid giving himself more work 😂 I’m so glad the video could make you laugh! Thanks for being here :)
This was hilarious!!! I didn’t realize it did nothing until Emily kept playing 🤣
😂 😂
I've been waiting for Russ to get some "hand model" recognition. It brings to mind the time George Costanza, from Seinfeld, was a hand model and the agency explained what happened to the model he replaced 😅.
Also, your wheezy laughs are the best, Emily 😂🤣
😂 a rare Russ appearance!! I love Seinfeld, great reference!!! I haven’t laughed this hard in a while !!!
@@emilyharpist 🤣
That was fun!
Think of it this way: for 100$ you got a wonderful hand-painted enclosure, pre-drilled to accomodate two top-notch jack terminals (they also come included!!!), a best-in-class heavy-duty 3PDT footswitch (also came with your purchase), a super-long-life Dare Devils' exclusive "young grass green" LED (yet another bonus!!!), two audiophile-grade rotary potentiometers with custom-made "pale ivory" knobs (can you believe this was part of the bundle too?!?!?!), and a great industry-standart Boss-style DC barrel connector, which ensures hassle-free compatibility with a wide variety of pedal power supplies available on the market. And all this - for a price of less than 20 Salted Caramel Mochas (Venti)!!!
Sounds like a steal to me... :)
The most adorable girl ever. Having so much fun with the inane and useless. Super fun to watch.
Thanks so much Ronnie ❤️ 😊
I had a bass that was active and I rewired it. There was an extra knob that used to be for the active EQ. I told my friends it was the “talent” knob, which I could use on difficult licks.
Thanks, Russ. The pedal may have costed $99 but Emily's reaction was priceless!
(I can think of a few colleagues who would claim to hear a difference with the pedal tho hahaha)
Still mesmerising.
I think I need 10 of these.
“If you like your tone, you’ll like your tone using this pedal”
Great you opened it up. Should have been filled with black goop like the Klon to hide the secret diodes and such.
Worth it for the playing at the end.
😊
It's borderline incomprehensible to me, as a guitarist who has only really ever played electric to not instinctively reach out with my right big toe and switch pedals off and on completely by feet.
It's really cool to see how our instruments dictate our actions and those actions are not universal.
Ultimate move - actually change the sound in post processing sometimes for viewers to second guess themselves
That was hilarious. I love that she knew what it was.
😂♡
Isn't the Placebo on John Mayers board though?
That was great!!! So glad you opened it. Do they really charge $100? That's a kind of evil genius.
You can clearly hear the pedal tones when he tweaks the knobs.
The pedal works on 40% of the cases.
Thanks Garth,
The awesome prank AND the awesome play along with the prank. Epic video!
Need one for my church pedal board, should shock some one. Fantastic!
How wholesome is this channel :D.
😊 ❤️
This is amazing, and the best part about it is when you finally look down and because you are a Pedal lover you KNEW what that pedal was and then the joke of knowing really kicked in.. it really should be an ALWAYS on pedal on your videos now haha especially for that “true bypass” lmao Russ
3:12 is the most Boston accent I've ever heard
LMFAOOO I’m from Lawng Island, NY 😂
This one NEEDS to go onto the band camp
Soon!!!
It was still an enjoyable demo even if nothing happened.
y'all are adorable
Like the enchanter pedal - meaningsless.
May I ask? Do you live in Sweden?
Would you consider doing a performance of 4'33" on this pedal for me, please? I can only imagine how good that would sound. I'm sure the spirit of Cage must've been consulted in the design here... 😂
😂 lmao! I will reamp the 4’33 cover that I posted in April through this - ua-cam.com/video/4BDa4rks6VI/v-deo.html
@@emilyharpist I missed that, thanks for the link. Beautiful sense of tension and space in your playing there... 😄
😂 it was for April fools last year!!!
The "Make Noise Not War" shirt was an astutely Zen wardrobe choice for this pedal demo because Q: When is a sound not a noise? A: Only when it's absent.
Haha! That's hilarious, you so should always use this pedal, if only for the viewers enquiries into what it does :D
That was fucking awesome. You guys rule!!
Thanks Tommy!!!
Thats awsome
I know a sound technician that had a few dummy controls for ornery musicians to adjust when they felt the need to change an already perfect tone/mix.
😂 😂 omg that’s amazing
It is soo funny i laugh a good laugh, it made me feel good thanks. Love cheers
Thanks so much for being here!!! 😊 happy to make you laugh :)
