here's a fact: some of the sound chips don't die completely from overvoltage. They might partly start working again once power is disconnected and reduced back to approx. 6 volts. The sound will be quiet, slowed down, distorted or "demonic" sounding, but the sound chip will still try making noise (like the plane toy was still quietly playing music at 15 volts)... The only way to effectively kill a sound chip is by isolating it from the rest of the toy because the cheap wiring starts acting as a resistor under high voltage.
