    The profound water crisis in Cape Town, South Africa is affecting the rich and poor, tourists and hosts. In this short doc produced by the German political advocacy group Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung, Tadzio Müller demonstrates just what it means to live on 50 liters (13.2 gallons) of water per day. In a city where the underprivileged already faced insufficient water resources, the middle class, the government, environmentalists, and engineers are all focused on how to get by-and how to prevent this disaster in the future. But, as Müller notes, current trends mean similar shortages could arise in other places around the world.

    Cape Town residents must now live with just 50 liters each day, which is barely enough for a shower. What about resource management do you think we can learn from South Africa's situation?

      Humanity needs to wake up and realize we're in this together and that the little worlds we made for ourselves will all mutually be destroyed if we don't humble ourselves and cooperate beyond surface level niceties and delusional supremacy paradigms. Americans won't realize the global privilege they have until it's gone and when that moment comes no amount of retrospect will save us. Good outcomes come when you use the resources you have NOW.

    This is really sad. I hope the government and experts take a positive working plan to resolve this issue. 50 liters a day is just too little for any good use, except for urgent necessities. I hope the people of Cape Town stand strong in facing this crisis. Thanks National Geographic for sharing.

      As a Cape Town resident, Im able to make due with 50 litres per day, however, my house mate and I supplement our drinking, teeth brushing and food prep water with Newlands spring water 😏
      We use grey water to flush the toilet, etc.
      Water tank to capture rain water. It is possible.

    Build a Desalination plant. An Aircraft carrier can produce 400,000 gallons of fresh water per day. Build a land-based one.

    • @fitrianhidayat
      @fitrianhidayat 6 років тому +18

      Jimmie Lovett they're building one, but because they started it a bit too late, it's unclear whether or not it'll be completed in time before day zero, plus, the sa government making it difficult for them to get the needed funding (last time i heard about it), saying the cape town gov is making this whole crisis up.

    • @jimmielovett226

      400,000 gallons is 1,500,000 litres. On average, with most of the population consuming 50 liters per day, Cape Town uses 500,000,000 litres per day! Do you see the dilemma here?

    • @allgoo1964
      @allgoo1964 6 років тому +7

      Jimmie Lovett says:
      "Build a Desalination plant. An Aircraft carrier can produce 400,000 gallons of fresh water per day."
      ==
      Every big boat has one.
      Not clean enough for the drinking, not enough amount to be used by the crew.
      It's only used for cooling the engine.
      They would load the water for the human consumption at each port they stop.
      It uses a lot of energy, that means promoting more climate change, which promotes more water shortage.
      You can't win.

    Just came back from this beautiful city. It wasn't actually as bad as they're making it seem. It is a big problem but we managed to stay under the limit quite comfortably. and now I'm back in my country and I'm continuing the short showers, the buckets, the scarce flushes. We take water for granted and there's absolutely no reason not to be careful.

      Caitlyn Wagner CW Asking for what is happening in your own city to some random people in UA-cam won't give accurate results. I bet there is plenty of local newspapers, magazines, radio and TV news, you can also google your city's name and click "news." You could ask someone around you. When a big city is going through such a crisis, the local media is bound to report on it. If you don't trust it, check international media, and see if there is coincidence. Reliable information exists.

    I have a REALLY good idea. Now hear me out:
    Put VALVES on those public water fountains where people are filling them up. It's like more than HALF of the water just goes on the ground.

  • @Visionery1

    That shower in the beginning is a waste of time, some water ends up on the user, some in the bucket the rest disappears down the drain. Shower in the bath with a hand shower, direct the water where it's needed, then you can wash (properly) with as little as 10l, which can then be used to fill the toilet cistern. Desalinated water has its own issues, one need only research the health problems currently being experienced in Israel after decades of drinking sterile water, devoid of any minerals.

    South African should put conditions on housing/building developers by forcing them to also include treatment plants in their blueprints, meaning water used in the toilet, bathroom should be reused after being recycled in their respective local treatment plants... That way billions of litres will be saved daily......

      The problem with desalinization (the proper term for the process of removing salt from water.) Is that it requires A) a lot of energy or large solar arrays that are both expensive. B) The process currently creates almost always a sludge/water mix called a brine. The problem with this mixture is that its salt content is so high you cant release it into the ocean or fresh water. Also if I recall correctly the energy to transfer the water mix into a usable state is somewhat high. You could use the salts in a lot of industries problem is making it separate. Bottom line we need to curb our overall usage of clean water in developed countries.

      Another problem with transferring ocean water is that if machines are placed to transfer water, you're sucking up the homes of local fish and organisms. Last time I checked, water turbines weren't working because they were killing fish. Same thing with wind turbines, killing too many birds.
