This year’s Ancient History Day theme is Hindsight is 2020 which is… very appropriate for the last 18 months we’ve all had, am I right?! So when I was presented with this topic, I immediately thought of the toilet paper video I did at the beginning of this panorama, Panini, whatever else everyone’s calling this past year to not get their content flagged. So I figured, why not do something similar, but with something I’m sure we’ve all come to cherish even more since spending a lot more time inside: Our Pillows.

The earliest recorded use of modern humans using pillows dates back to around 7,000 BCE in ancient Mesopotamia. These pillows were made out of stone with the top carved into a half-moon shape to support the neck. These definitely wouldn’t have been the most comfortable, but their main function was, like with the prehistoric layers of ash, to keep insects out of all of your orifices and from getting all up in your hair. And who knows, they may have covered them in textiles or some other organic materials, but we haven’t recovered any evidence of that yet. Which is difficult to do in the first place as organic materials like that don’t last very well in the archaeological record.

Raven, nice pillows! Another related topic that might be interesting - what is the history of separate clothing for sleeping? Did the pharaohs wear pyjamas? Did ancient Romans wear nightgowns? At what point in human history did mankind find a need for sleepwear?

As someone who tosses and turns at night, I'm pretty sure I would have knocked myself unconscious if I had to use a hard solid object as a pillow. If I didn't knock myself unconscious, at the very least I would fall off of it and wake myself up.

i was under the impression that the 'Egyptian pillows' were not used by living people. that they were just grave goods to support the mummies and stuff becuase all the actual daily use pillows would not have been preserved over time

Great video! I really appreciate when in archeology we discuss things relating to the daily lives of our ancestors. They really humanize our ancestors and allow us to relate to them more. As you said, it also is rather comforting to know certain aspects of society that never really changed 😊

Trigger warning for your bug fear

    My successful plan of attack:
I've woken up from a small weevil crawling around in my ear. I went to the bathroom and filled my ear with water to flush it out. It crawled out to not drown. The sound/feeling of its sporadic movement was uncomfortable but I was more concerned about it being squished in there and needing to go to a doctor to remove it

Random question early anthropology question: The movie "The Thirteenth Warrior," based on the book _Eaters of the Dead,_ asserts that small, isolated bands of neanderthals may have survived much later than the general depopulation of their species, maybe even long enough to coexist with homo sapiens cultures with writing and sailing ships and such. Is that remotely possible, or is that strictly an author's creative license?

When I went to Guangzhou, China one year the Museum of the Western Han Dynasty Mausoleum of the Nanyue King, how's that for a name, had an entire room devoted to so called "hard" pillows. There must have been at least 100 of all types of materials and styles.

Its suggested, I'm told, we have reason to fear
The average human eats half a dozen spiders in their sleep each year
I can't say for certain whether that's true
But now it resides in your head too.

So... are we thinking ancient greeks were the first to come up with the idea of stuffing a cloth bag with something soft and putting their head on it when they sleep? Do we have a rough date for this revolutionary concept?

PILLOW TALK! You're vibing Doris Day! See? Crying pillow! THAT is why you need a waste BASKET in your bedroom! (You shouldn't blow your nose on the sheets.) And you wear your earrings to sleep? That could cause ...complications...I have slept in a tree. Happy to say, I did not fall out. Also slept in a snowbank once. Still not understanding your "many pillows" approach. Spares in case one gets TOO tear soaked? I have two pillows: one on one side and one on the other just in case I roll to that side. (Or one to sleep on and one to hold and cry...as the case may be;) "Existential dread?" Your life DOES INDEED have meaning, purpose and value! There! Questions answered! Go back to sleep...AND my pick for ancient pillow? Be in England, have a pregnant wife...and make HER pillow big enough for two!
