What you call “quite drawn out,” we used to call story telling which included character building. It’s how horror movies were made before cheap cgi effects and lame jump scares became the norm.
If you're worried about copyright strikes, you should add a disclaimer page about how Film Criticism is fair use under copyright law, and maybe make your reaction channel a little more 'critical', either by giving a review at the end, or by discussing interesting aspects of the film-making as you're watching it.
FYI: Father Merrin, the 70 some year old priest, was played by Max von Sydow who was only 43 at the time. Due in part to his wonderful acting and the superb old age makeup by the late great Dick Smith, von Sydow briefly had some difficulty getting acting jobs after appearing in "The Exorcist" because it was thought he was actually as old as Father Merrin was. Also, five years earlier von Sydow had played Jesus Christ in the movie "The Greatest Story Ever Told".
You have to understand that in the first possession scene when she's flailing around on the bed, it wasn't a matter of holding her down (they couldn't). Most people don't pick up on this, but it was the demon that was grabbing her and throwing her around like a rag doll. It wasn't her having seizures or doing that to herself like some people often mistake. It's explained in detail in the book.
The novel, "The Exorcist" by William Peter Blatty, is based on his research of an actual exorcism that took place in the 1940s. It was a boy who was possessed and the exorcism lasted for several weeks. The demon was named Pazuzu. He was the Mesopotamian demon of the west wind. According to legend, he was so evil that even other demons were afraid of him. He was the demon that Father Merrin had exorcised previously in Africa. Pazuzu was seeking not only revenge against Merrin but also to attack Father Karras who was losing his faith.
The tall man wearing the plaid suit whom she says, "You're going to die up there" is an astronaut. It's alluded to in a brief conversation at the party that almost no reactor ever seems to pick up on. She's directly addressing the astronaut when she tells him he will die in space.
lol Good call having some company with you for this one. My older brother took me to see this when I was 10 !!! Probably 20 before I saw another horror movie lol
At the end, the next priest tells the cop, the same thing Damian told the cop and in the same manner....I've seen it. Did he get possessed giving last rites to Damian?😮😮😮Hopefully this version u watched had the upside down crab crawl on the stairs, she does!! There's movies out of about 50 good horror movies, I never thought u would have the guts to do. I would put hereditary number 2 after this!! The descent, barbarian, hereditary, the exorcist, sinister ,hellraiser, the witch, the boy, Orphan, drag me to hell, the ring, the grudge, lights out(watch the 2 minute short first!😮)the woman in black, the Conjuring, insidious Annabelle La llarona, Nun movies... It's all part of the Conjuring universe. The first Halloween and Friday the 13th, The Omen, Hellraiser, first evil dead trilogy, smile, and I'll throw in 1982 The Thing, for the gore factor. But the exorcist, is THE horror movie all others are judged by!! Ironically, max was only 42 when he filmed this, he had trouble getting jobs after this because directors thought he was older! Linda did a masterpiece acting job here and should have got a lifetime Oscar. The director William Freidken kept the room at 40 degrees, fired pistols by the actors heads to scare them, and the green slime went into the young priest's mouth wasn't supposed to happen, that's why he looks so surprised! He was a cutting edge director! Max ironically not long before this, did maybe the greatest Jesus movie ever made, the greatest story ever told! He also did Conan, 3 DAYS of the Condor, minority report, and others! The moms back was permanently hurt in the scene where she's thrown down. Linda had to have round the clock security for about 8 months, because people were convinced she was possessed! She couldn't get much work after this either. The detective is a masterclass actor. Arthur Miller first saw him on stage, and said he wrote the play, death of a salesman, for him. He was in the acting masterpiece, 12 angry men! The voice actor is a woman who smoked cigs and drank whiskey every day of her life! She purposely went uncredited for this film! Orson Welles called her the greatest voice actor of all time! This movie, The Thing, Alien and Bladerunner, prove beyond a doubt, that practical effects a are way better than special effects, robotics, and CGI! This also tells u, never get a Ouija board! Somehow without explanation, part of the evil figurine and the Catholic pendant made it to DC. Where they were originally buried in Iraq, I'm sure the pendant was used to keep the demon inside the figurine. But when the Ouija board came out, it released the demon!! Type in here, news footage and stories of people leaving the theater from, The Exorcist 😮😮😮
Seriously why are people so down on the doctors since from their pov of course theyd check out every possible natural cause for her behavior because in their and our world thats what youd expect youd think they were nuts if they didnt..
~~ many have said this film "starts slow" - but the first one-third is just slowly ratcheting-up the tension & anxiety until you suddenly get those shocking scenes in the bedroom - just forget the popcorn with this one - only way to properly enjoy this film is with a steaming hot bowl of pea soup and a tall cool glass of holy water ..
1973! The year I was born. Wait, that would make me almost 52..... No, I changed my mind...I was born in 1993....yes, thats right 1993. Ha. Great reaction. Thanknyou both👋👋👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃
Faut bien regarder un film pour savoir s'il est intéressant. Je trouve que c'est un film intrigant, mais malheureusement pour mon cas, il ne fait pas plus peur que ça, dérangeant peut-être mais pas flippant.
Not everyone gets scared from this movie, or movies in general. I was much younger than youtube reviewers when I saw this, I had the same nonplussed reaction, for years I considered the exorcist a comedy movie... now I watch other people's reactions to it, for comedy...lol
This is not a be-all and end-all review. This is the end of a fun night in with my sister that we thought we would share. Yes, we're not everyone's cup of tea, but here is no need to be rude. Everyone's reaction is different, and not everything has to be so serious.
@@YTsupportsZionaziGenocide The movie was not just in terror and creepiness, but as a best picture nomination. The most terrifying thriller that could be a best picture of the year. FInd me another movie like that. Fantastic character development, screenplay, the lack of a musical score but just enough 12 tone music in the right cuts of the movie. It was magnificently directed and created.

This was the way it was meant to be seen the theatrical cut had to remove some parts that were deemed too shocking, namely the upside down spider walk... As a general rule of thumb, the directors cut, uncut or unrated versions of movies are always better than theatrical cuts which are either cut down for runtime ( typically by cutting out speaking parts), of shocking/objectionable content (typically either nudity or scenes of excessive violence or gore. In the case of the exorcist parts were cut because they were deemed too shocking for the some member of religious audience that take the subject matter seriously.

agree. let me add - I wouldn't want to watch the best flicks ever under these conditions..... far far different than a real theater...
The man she said that to about "Die up there", was an astronaut. They reveal it a few moments earlier. Everyone seems to miss it though.🤔
Oh, I see.. That guy must have been terrified!! 😱😱

The astronaut reappears in Blatty's film The Ninth Configuration, where once again he explores the nature of sacrifice.

Add - both actresses had significant injuries during this flick. they'd probably never be able to make this today. well. cgi crappoouola.
The older detective is played by Lee J. Cobb from "12 Angry Men". I think you would love it! The 1957 version is legendary.👍👍
clicked so fast that it would make your head spin around!!!
🤣😂🤣 Hi Mikey! 😉
was the girl on the left checked for a pulse?
Yes, twice 😆

Nothing like watching two girls munching on chips during the exorcism scene

BLUGHHH.
