Yes Grape Nuts may be available today across the USA … But when I shot this there was a shortage and you couldn’t find them anywhere at any price. They are flat out discontinued in the Canadian marketplace, so that makes it even tougher for me.
When my 99 year old great grandfather Hymie died we cleaned out his apartment and found 5 unopened boxes of Grape Nuts. He attributed his longevity to being regular from the Grape Nuts as well as one 3 oz nightly glass of sherry.
Grape nuts are still found in my area of Minnesota. What happened was during 2020 and into 2021 was the plant was shut down due to covid. Now shortage is due to distribution problems.

@@Lynn-kh5rs I used to make the hot cereal in the microwave using substantially less milk than called for, an almost obscene amount of real butter, ditto for the brown sugar, with a good shake of cinnamon. Sub sweetened condensed milk for the milk and brown sugar, add a bit of water and cook in a pan instead...quick camp breakfast, with enough SCM left over for a cup or two of coffee.
@@Lynn-kh5rs It is a great hot cereal, I never bother to measure the milk, just a bit more than covered, add a bit of butter to slow down the boil over and microwave it, then add brown sugar and dried blueberries when I have them. For some reason they are much more filling than oatmeal. A year after your comment I too, checked the website, some really good ideas there.
It reminds me of that recipe of how to make meat-like burgers with oatmeal and onions. And yes - add more onions, they will make it taste more juicy and meaty.
You might be able to swap the grape nuts for some cooked steel cut oats. They have a chewy texture that would absorb flavors and mimic the chewy texture of meat. Just a thought. Thanks for the great video!
Great recipe! I'd suggest using stock to cook the lentils for a bit of meaty flavor. Also, a pinch of mace really helps make that turn to breakfast sausage!

When forcing something through a sieve, use the pestle from your morter and pestle in a circular motion. It works really well with stuff you have blendered like salsa to make taco sauce. Leaves the seeds and tomato skins behind.
Use a 'china cap' that is a product made specifically for that purpose, a sieve like the e one he used will need to be replaced after a couple of those uses.
I love these war time or depression era recipes when they had to improvise with cheap, common ingredients. Looking forward to the other recipes in this cookbook!

Mom would buy that horrible rice puff cereal for herself because she was the only one that ate those. My sister and I always hated those because we thought they look like bugs. They looked like spotted bug bodies and they had the consistency of packing peanuts, yuck, so gross.
I like it that you really try to stay with the recipe for authenticity. Tasting it that way First helps us to understand history and what our ancestors tasted originally, Then altering ingredients to according to our taste for the future.
Kellogs makes branbuds, my dad started using those years ago for his version of bran muffins, which used grapenuts originally. I think you'd have to grind then a bit. I'd not only add more onion, but add a bit more moisture via milk or unsweetened applesauce.
Bran buds have 12g sugar added while grape nuts has 0g added. The flavor is very different and bran buds has psyllium husks which can change how water content works. I buy wheat bran from a Natural Grocers for all of 0.89$ for a pound. Try looking for stores that might sell bulk goods.
I put unsweetened applesauce and oatmeal in my meatloaf with hamburger, eggs, diced onions along with herbs and spices, and various sauces. The spices and sauces vary depending on if I'm making an Italian style meatloaf, a Hawaiian style meatloaf, a Tex-Mex, a cheeseburger or Asian style meatloaf. I use about half the meat a recipe calls for and half oats mixture. I don't tell people and they usually eat seconds and often ask for the recipe. My sister's boyfriend says it's the best basic meatloaf ever and he loved how easy it was to change it with easy additions. When they broke up he wanted my recipe so he could make it for himself. He liked to take the Itilian style leftover meatloaf, cut it up and serve it with some tomato sauce and fresh herbs over pasta. It's also good, according to him, on a subroll with tomato or pizza sauce. I bet it would even be good on a pizza! Lol. I also put oats in my meatballs. I learned to use oats from my mom, my family has always done it. It must be something my mother learned from her mother during the great depression. My mother grew up on a farm that had plenty of beef cows and freezers full of beef. Mom always did it, even back when hamburger was 3 lb for a dollar, so it wasn't done by mom to save money but done because it taste good, it's what she was used to and it's a bit more healthy.. I much prefer it to meatier meatloaf or meatloaf with bread crumbs or loaf bread filler.

I have made several batches of these since this video. They don't really taste like breakfast sausage but, they are delicious. I add other seasonings to them, depending on my mood. My mother made fried bean patties when I was a child and I loved them. These are very reminiscent of those.
Before I got Celiac I loved Grape Nuts pudding and on really cold days a breakfast concoction that involved cooking the geape nuts in milk and adding a little honey.

In the 1940s a lot of US kitchens would have had a "food mill"--you can still find them online, they are a hand-cranked antecedent of food processors, like oversized potato ricers--which would be a lot easier than forcing through a sieve.
Yes, and probably made by Foley. Our family wore one out in about 35 years putting cooked apples for sauce and also tomatoes. The second one was still like new when she quit cooking. You knew you had done it enough when the skins and seeds were almost completely dry. Oh, and raspberries to take some of the seeds out of the jam.
The recent location I found Grape Nuts (within the last 2 weeks) is a t Meijer’s Grocery Store in Avon, Ohio (a suburb west of Cleveland). I cannot wait to try this recipe.
I haven't had grapenuts in a long time. When I grew up in Canada, my Mom would pour boiling water over them in your bowl until they were softened (not mushy though), drain off excess water if there is any, then add sugar and milk for a hot cereal as a change about with oatmeal and Cream of Wheat. I don't care for lentils but I would try these, especially fried fried in bacon drippings, and I think it would be tasty as a sausage biscuit or sausage egg and cheese biscuit. Thank you for this recipe! I am a vegetarian due to health concerns, and I love sausage. I will give this a try. It is a low work recipe and does not contain oddball ingredients I can't get. Btw, I just checked Walmart, and at least right now, I can get a box for $3.50 or so.

Unfortunately due to a medical condition I am on a low residue diet and can't try this particular recipe. I still enjoy this video. I like depression age cooking . My grandmother carefully wrote out as much genealogical information as she could remember for me...On the back of old envelopes which she kept instead of buying note pads. That says almost as much as the writing does.

I was in a clinical trial To reduce cholesterol by eating a certain quantity of oatmeal everyday. The oatmeal was even provided for free. By the end of the 3 months I was getting pretty tired of oatmeal which I normally like quite a bit. To get in my daily requirement I experimented with somethings like using it in meat or loaf instead of bread which is quite good and I even made mark make patties out of it. I even tried frying plane oatmeal and that's not a wonderful thing. We weren't supposed to change our diet in anyway and eat as we normally did except for adding the quantity of oatmeal each day. They sent kids to measure the cholesterol before and after the trial. My cholesterol was already normal but I had a drop of about 20 points after 3 months of the oatmeal. I love oat bran to which is a so eable fiber and great for keeping your cholesterol I love it brand to which is a so eable fiber and great for keeping your cholesterol under control. At the age of 72 with multiple health problems including diabetes I find that my cholesterol remains in good shape with my bad cholesterol lower than my good cholesterol. I still really enjoy oatmeal too.
Most common place where folks get all sideways when trying to emulate meat is that the fail to think about the desired end result. The ingredients used need to either taste like meat or have mild to no taste. There needs to be something-there to provide some "chew". Steel Cut Oats works well for both. Toss in a bullion cube or two while cooking. The "meaty" flavor (Umami) of meat and many other foods comes from Glutamates. Mushrooms are high in glutamates AND have that chewy texture when cooked. Obviously, MSG (Accent, if you are at the grocery store) is high in Glutamates, just decrease the salt a tad when you season. Meat has fat. The substitute also needs fat.for the right "mouth feel"...You can also play around a bit with Unflavored Gelatin. For seasoning I've sen some pretty weird combinations. Don't. Use Steak Seasoning or Prime Rib Rub from the grocery store and let the experts figure out a good combo. Check the label for MSG, and adjust how much you add accordingly. For the ultimate in meaty flavor, nothing really beats Prime Rib Night downtown. Sorry.
this is so funny because I came to this site to suggest a recipe to you about sausage. It is Scottish Square sausage or Lorne sausage. It is easy and I do believe that making it oneself makes breakfast meats a little less expensive. Happy cooking!!!
I made this recipe and it’s AMAZING! Vegetarian breakfast sausage 2 c oatmeal 4 eggs or 3 extra large ( flax or other egg substitute if vegan) 1 c minced mushrooms 3 tbl gluten 1 tsp liquid smoke 1 tsp. Breakfast sausage or bratwurst seasoning mix spice kit ( can order the spice mix on line 👍🏻👍🏻)( can adjust the amount to your taste but try 1 tsp first) 2 tsp Beef broth concentrate or again ( vegetable broth concentrate) 1 tbl olive oil Mix all dry ingredients first then add egg, oil, liquid smoke. Mix WELL in stand mixer or by hand. Let rest for 15 minutes then shape into patties and fry in oil until golden brown. Cool completely then portion into freezer bags and freeze, just pull out what you need.

I've been wanting to make this since the video came out. the family really loved it mixed up with eggs and a little maple syrup. it is so filling ! not much to fill you up. a great money savings with this crazy inflation too.
Back in the 70s, there were a series of Grape Nuts commercials with a guy named Euell Gibbons. He was a professed “nature guy” who would start by saying, “ you know you can eat pine cones” or some other forest thing. Then he would dive into a bowl of Grape Nuts. I wasn’t to keen on cereal that was compared to pine cones, so I never bought them.

I will be trying these. I’m in Canada too so I’ll try making my own Grape Nuts. There are several recipes online for doing so. I also used to make a Grape Nuts pudding which I have missed.
In the summertime , love Grape Nuts with frozen blueberries. The frozen berries turn the milk into an icy treat. Been eating lots of Grape Nuts for 40 years, but it must be eating with added fruit, such as nectarines, peaches, berries, or bananas. In a small bowl microwave a layer of Grape Nuts topped with a little butter and honey until slightly browned, then add sliced apple and spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, clove). Microwave for a few minutes until apples are cooked and you have mock apple pie.
SDA vegetarians have been using this method for a century. There is an interesting history between the Post (and Kellogs) cereal company and the Seventh Day Adventist church, centered in Battle Creek, Michigan.

Out of curiosity I tried to find Grapenuts on my local online grocery stores. No luck! I’m quite surprised as they used to be readily available. Huh, go figure? These mock sausages look quite good. I would add the poultry seasoning and some parsley. Fun channel.
I grew up as Seventh Day Adventist so I'm used to vegetarian/vegan meat analogs like mushroom patties, gluten (seitan) stakes and basically any vegetarian meats from Loma Linda/Worthington and Morningstar brand foods. As an adult I do eat meat as well as my mother, she won't eat pork though, and this recipe would fit in nicely with my vegetarian meat recipes. I NEVER would have thought to use Grape Nuts cereal...how clever. I do make a mean Special K cereal and cottage cheese "meat"loaf tho and it's really delicious!!

That’s what I use. It works, but I would add a little extra salt because of it.
Or try bulgur. It's a par-boiled wheat berry (might be wrong) but it has such a nice texture without the bran (or so I believe from the color of it).

What makes them so nice in the Times we are in now they maybe 80 years old but relevant today as they were then.
I doubt Grape Nuts were as expensive then as they are today and the value of the dollar was likely higher too.
I love Grape Nuts and ate them every morning for breakfast growing up in the US.
For me, the great thing is that I can, with omitting the bacon drippings, use this for my NON-Pork eating friends.

I don't eat pork, so I substitute basic hamburger for pork. They cook up great! Yes, liquid smoke is essential.
Definitely remember grape nuts on my grandparent’s breakfast table. Definitely didn’t notice when they disappeared from store shelves though. Lol.

I have made several batches of these since this video. They don't really taste like breakfast sausage but, they are delicious. I add other seasonings to them, depending on my mood. My mother made fried bean patties when I was a child and I loved them. These are very reminiscent of those.
Before I got Celiac I loved Grape Nuts pudding and on really cold days a breakfast concoction that involved cooking the geape nuts in milk and adding a little honey.

I can get Grape Nuts here in Chicago any time you them. I also used to make homemade Grape Nuts to sell at my Farmer’s Market stand. They were delicious, but they were the most labor intensive thing I made. I’m going to try these. Thanks.
In the 1940s a lot of US kitchens would have had a "food mill"--you can still find them online, they are a hand-cranked antecedent of food processors, like oversized potato ricers--which would be a lot easier than forcing through a sieve.
Yes, and probably made by Foley. Our family wore one out in about 35 years putting cooked apples for sauce and also tomatoes. The second one was still like new when she quit cooking. You knew you had done it enough when the skins and seeds were almost completely dry. Oh, and raspberries to take some of the seeds out of the jam.
The recent location I found Grape Nuts (within the last 2 weeks) is a t Meijer’s Grocery Store in Avon, Ohio (a suburb west of Cleveland).

I haven't had grapenuts in a long time. When I grew up in Canada, my Mom would pour boiling water over them in your bowl until they were softened (not mushy though), drain off excess water if there is any, then add sugar and milk for a hot cereal as a change about with oatmeal and Cream of Wheat. I don't care for lentils but I would try these, especially fried fried in bacon drippings, and I think it would be tasty as a sausage biscuit or sausage egg and cheese biscuit. Thank you for this recipe! I am a vegetarian due to health concerns, and I love sausage. I will give this a try. It is a low work recipe and does not contain oddball ingredients I can't get. Btw, I just checked Walmart, and at least right now, I can get a box for $3.50 or so.
Interesting recipe. My dad ate grapenuts and I use too . It is amazing what you can make we them . Unfortunately due to a medical condition I am on a low residue diet and can't try this particular recipe. I still enjoy this video. I like depression age cooking . It reminds me of my grandmother who saved everything. From gift wrap to aluminum foil.
My grandmother carefully wrote out as much genealogical information as she could remember for me...On the back of old envelopes which she kept instead of buying note pads. That says almost as much as the writing does.
I live in California. I haven’t eaten Grape Nuts for ages, but they were always on the shelf at home when I was growing up. I just looked online. They are available at Target and Walmart here

Not shocked they taste good. I have turned oatmeal into things you would of never thought possible and had meat eaters dive in and want more.
I was in a clinical trial To reduce cholesterol by eating a certain quantity of oatmeal everyday. The oatmeal was even provided for free. By the end of the 3 months I was getting pretty tired of oatmeal which I normally like quite a bit. To get in my daily requirement I experimented with somethings like using it in meat or loaf instead of bread which is quite good and I even made mark make patties out of it. I even tried frying plane oatmeal and that's not a wonderful thing.
We weren't supposed to change our diet in anyway and eat as we normally did except for adding the quantity of oatmeal each day. They sent kids to measure the cholesterol before and after the trial. My cholesterol was already normal but I had a drop of about 20 points after 3 months of the oatmeal. I love oat bran to which is a so eable fiber and great for keeping your cholesterol I love it brand to which is a so eable fiber and great for keeping your cholesterol under control. At the age of 72 with multiple health problems including diabetes I find that my cholesterol remains in good shape with my bad cholesterol lower than my good cholesterol. I still really enjoy oatmeal too.
Most common place where folks get all sideways when trying to emulate meat is that the fail to think about the desired end result.
The ingredients used need to either taste like meat or have mild to no taste. There needs to be something-there to provide some "chew". Steel Cut Oats works well for both. Toss in a bullion cube or two while cooking.
The "meaty" flavor (Umami) of meat and many other foods comes from Glutamates. Mushrooms are high in glutamates AND have that chewy texture when cooked. Obviously, MSG (Accent, if you are at the grocery store) is high in Glutamates, just decrease the salt a tad when you season.
Meat has fat. The substitute also needs fat.for the right "mouth feel"...You can also play around a bit with Unflavored Gelatin. For seasoning I've sen some pretty weird combinations. Don't. Use Steak Seasoning or Prime Rib Rub from the grocery store and let the experts figure out a good combo. Check the label for MSG, and adjust how much you add accordingly.
For the ultimate in meaty flavor, nothing really beats Prime Rib Night downtown. Sorry.
Glen: you really need to try grapenuts pudding. It's a staple of my family holidays. The recipe used to be on the box.
this is so funny because I came to this site to suggest a recipe to you about sausage. It is Scottish Square sausage or Lorne sausage. It is easy and I do believe that making it oneself makes breakfast meats a little less expensive. Happy cooking!!!

I made this recipe and it’s AMAZING!
Vegetarian breakfast sausage
2 c oatmeal
4 eggs or 3 extra large ( flax or other egg substitute if vegan)
1 c minced mushrooms
3 tbl gluten
1 tsp liquid smoke
1 tsp. Breakfast sausage or bratwurst seasoning mix spice kit ( can order the spice mix on line 👍🏻👍🏻)( can adjust the amount to your taste but try 1 tsp first)
2 tsp Beef broth concentrate or again ( vegetable broth concentrate)
1 tbl olive oil
Mix all dry ingredients first then add egg, oil, liquid smoke. Mix WELL in stand mixer or by hand. Let rest for 15 minutes then shape into patties and fry in oil until golden brown.
Cool completely then portion into freezer bags and freeze, just pull out what you need.
My vegetarian daughter loves these.

I've been wanting to make this since the video came out. the family really loved it mixed up with eggs and a little maple syrup. it is so filling ! not much to fill you up. a great money savings with this crazy inflation too.
My mum in the 1960s used porrige and mixed herbs. And rolled them into sausage shapes
I loved Grape Nuts when I was a kid!! We put them in yogourt.
Back in the 70s, there were a series of Grape Nuts commercials with a guy named Euell Gibbons. He was a professed “nature guy” who would start by saying, “ you know you can eat pine cones” or some other forest thing. Then he would dive into a bowl of Grape Nuts. I wasn’t to keen on cereal that was compared to pine cones, so I never bought them.
Morning Glen, I recognise that there was a particular reason that made Grapenuts difficult to find in this instance. But I would be very happy to send items from my region of the US if they are difficult to source in your area. We're in New Mexico. And in normal times we take a trip or two back to Ireland each year.

Wow! Haven’t seen grapenuts in forever! We used to eat them when I was a kid…60+ years ago!! I guess our closest equivalent would be All Bran.
My mother used to make a meatloaf with Special K cereal. It was very good.
I grew up eating Grape Nuts, and still have them in the pantry. My favorite way to eat them is steamed.
In the summertime , love Grape Nuts with frozen blueberries. The frozen berries turn the milk into an icy treat. Been eating lots of Grape Nuts for 40 years, but it must be eating with added fruit, such as nectarines, peaches, berries, or bananas. In a small bowl microwave a layer of Grape Nuts topped with a little butter and honey until slightly browned, then add sliced apple and spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, clove). Microwave for a few minutes until apples are cooked and you have mock apple pie.
SDA vegetarians have been using this method for a century. There is an interesting history between the Post (and Kellogs) cereal company and the Seventh Day Adventist church, centered in Battle Creek, Michigan.

I love these older recipes that showed how to cook with frugality, leftover ingredients, low cost ingredients, every part of what you have ... it's how I cook today. Lentils are a miracle food I've been playing with for some time. Thank you for more ideas Glen!

We have Grape Nuts in Oklahoma, is one of my favorite cereals. I would of thought all of North America had them.
Love me some Grape Nuts Flakes, cousin to this cereal. Places like Wal-Mart are cutting back on item selection and Grape Nuts and Flakes are hard to find in some areas. I had to check with some of the more expensive grocery stores to find it. Now that I have a reliable source maybe I'll try this recipe.

Out of curiosity I tried to find Grapenuts on my local online grocery stores. No luck! I’m quite surprised as they used to be readily available. Huh, go figure? These mock sausages look quite good. I would add the poultry seasoning and some parsley. Fun channel.
I grew up as Seventh Day Adventist so I'm used to vegetarian/vegan meat analogs like mushroom patties, gluten (seitan) stakes and basically any vegetarian meats from Loma Linda/Worthington and Morningstar brand foods. As an adult I do eat meat as well as my mother, she won't eat pork though, and this recipe would fit in nicely with my vegetarian meat recipes. I NEVER would have thought to use Grape Nuts cereal...how clever. I do make a mean Special K cereal and cottage cheese "meat"loaf tho and it's really delicious!!
