  • This song originally came out in 1928 and was an instant Duke Ellington hit. For whatever reason, Cook waited until April 1955 to arrange it in "Rock and Roll Rythym." ... according to the box label. Cook would turn 56 years old that year. At the top of his game by this point, he was well respected and known worldwide for his musical contributions. Cook would remain at QRS for a few more years, and then he went to work at Aeolian.
It would take Cook about 3 hours to make a 30 foot long fox trot roll which played for about 2.5 minutes!
It has been said that Cooks "real love" was punching out rolls for the nickelodeon machines. He had a perforating machine attached to his own piano at his house and could work on rolls there. It is alleged that his first roll for QRS was "Dying with the Blues" in 1921, QRS roll number 1829.
Cook ranked "Tiger Rag" and "Flying Home" as his two best arrangements.
He was born this day, July 14, in 1899. One hundred-twenty five years ago today. Birthplace, Athens, Tennessee
