    Nice Job Vince 👍. When you were trying to re-assemble the motor, you can't put the motor together wrong as there's a little cut out in the metal housing, and square lug on the plastic part where the brushes go into. You can see it at 23:16

    The traditional manual impact driver did indeed have a hammer down effect. Because it worked by literally hitting it with a hammer. I still have one I inherited from my dad, I also have an air tool impact driver, but the modern battery ones are superior if maybe not as powerful at times. They only use the hammer effect on the torque.

      I had a small engine shop for 15 years and those were my number One tools when working on old snowblowers. A propane torch and the manual driver. I learned to buy the tool at harbor freight but buy the bits at Fastenal.
      Many would be surprised that the old 1960-1970s ariens snowblowers are still out performing anything made in the last 20 years.

    When you put the motor back together, it could have only gone one way, as the motor body was keyed to the terminal plate.

    • @SimonNemeth
      @SimonNemeth 3 години тому +1

      Regardless, even if it wasn't keyed, it can't possibly make a difference to the function of the motor. I'm not really sure why he thought it would.

    @paultasker7788 Годину тому

    After listening to that racket after you repaired that seized motor (incredibly loud) i decided to look for a review and see what it should sound like. To my amazement it was every bit as loud when new! Sounds exactly the same (even the exact same frequency of sound not even a semi tone out) so its a fix. The karcher can indeed be used horizontally and the motor also sounds quieter but both were equally good at drying the window of a shower screen.

    That's the craziest high tech solution to a low tech problem I've seen in a good long while. I mean, for all the effort involved (getting it out, charging it, using it, emptying it, etc) you may as well just use a squeegee. Maybe a towel at the bottom of whatever window if you don't want the drippings going somewhere, but geez, what a complicated invention. A solution in search of a problem if ever I saw one. :)

    I have the Kärcher one and after 10 years it still works as well as when I got it, although I don't use it much as it doesn't really save any time compared to a manual one.
    Another tip for waterproofing electronics is to melt paraffin wax over it. Basically the same as petroleum jelly but in a more solid form.

    Very nice fix as usual Vince! However, I agree on the fact that a new motor is required here because even with the lubrication you did, I can already hear the motor bearings are not very healthy at all. And as this spins at very high rpms, it won't take long until it seizes up again.

    I have the Karcher one and to be honest it does suffer from similar problems. If you are not watching and the bottle gets full, sometimes you go horizontal you find water spits out violently. I bought mine in Tesco clearance for just £10 when RRP was £89, so a proper bargain.
    Mine has developed a strange intermittent fault after 3 or 4 years in that it won't respond and won't charge, until you remove the battery for a few minutes, then off it will go again. I've taken it apart and no water ingress and even bought a new battery and still plays up now and again. But it is still soldiering on and we use it several times a day to dry our shower to keep us mould free.

    The motor can definitely be replaced, even if you don't find an exact one to one replacement. If it has the same dimensions and the same number of turns per coil (44T = 44 turns) you're probably okay. These cheap brushed DC motors are a dime a dozen and the voltage ratings on them usually don't mean much, so as long as the voltage rating is higher (e.g. 6v or 9v) it will probably work just fine.

    The bearing is typical of small motors. It's probably made from phosphor-bronze which is hard wearing. These bearings are usually sintered, meaning they are compressed from a powder, and are thus slightly porous on a microscopic scale. This allows them to retain a lubricant. So a drop of oil, 3-in-1 or even sewing machine oil, would not go amiss in an attempt to prevent it seizing again.🙂
    PS it doesn't make any difference but you can see a notch in the case and a lug on the plastic. Since the brushes aren't removable then the motor will always rotate according to the power leads polarity. The brushes are made from carbon and they do develop a leading and trailing edge in use. Reversing such a motor is not advisable as this can damage the brushes as they jam in the commutator slots. It doesn't matter with such a low voltage low power motor but on higher voltages this can cause arcing, known as tracking, over the commutator causing further damage to the motor from sparking.
    PPS I bought one from Asda for about £18 and I think it's great value.
    Also if you were to find out all about these things before you attempt a repair I think your videos would be far less entertaining. Keep up the good work🤞😀

    NOTE: neon is not incandescent the way incandescent is used to describe a energized filament light bulb. You see there is no filament crossing the length of a neon bulb or tube. In a neon it is the gas itself that is energized to the result of being luminescent. In an incandescent bulb it is the filament that is energized to luminescents.

    Like others have said the melting point of Vaseline is far too low , it then turns to liquid and runs away from where you want it.
    Dielectric or silicone grease has a much higher melting point. I tried using Vaseline on some PCBs in solar lights and it all just melted and ran out of the casing.

    they would need to look to the washing machine industry to fix the problem that they solved many years ago but then they wouldn't be able to sell you the newest model with 5% extra run time lol, yes it makes a difference because the case is keyed to the base. What is with your massive misappropriation of cookware, i'd love to be your neighbour "Love! Love, his washing the widows with a saucepan now!" lol
    Only upgrade to your fix would be maybe a washer over the spindle made from neoprene or maybe a bit off an old cutting or solder mat, glue that inplace and push the spindle through it to create a self healing seal around the spindle, and speaking of spindles, is that your pot of vaseline Vince? seems very large and suspiciously empty!!

  • @matteo_z
    @matteo_z 3 години тому

    I don't think it's user error, I just think it's bad design, the fill level is way too low, and the bearing is not protected at all, causing the motor to rust.
    I think the microcontroller is using some type of current sensing to know when the motor is drawing too much power (so it's not moving).
    Edit: it does not matter how you put back together the motor, the magnets have the same polarity and the inductance change polarity thanks to the brushes
    Edit 2: I have now tried writing about motors on the comment section 3 times, I give up, youtube won...

    Jeez, that sounds horrible, like a piece of the blower is hitting against the inside. Maybe the bearing went back in slightly angled?

      Nope it sounds the same as a new one! I watched a review of the new one to see how it should sound and noise was identical. Hard to believe but true!
