I wish I picked it up when I was 5! I'm wondering if my daughter will be interested in music. If so, I might get her started early, ya know, just the fun stuff.

I wish I woulda learned piano before I started guitar. If for nothing more than seeing the entire scale laid out like that on a piano verses searching the frets of my guitar.

@@JTravlos you can let her try and see she has the interest or not..Sometimes interest only comes in the later years..I stop at grade 4..back then it was conventional/classical learning and it’s kind of boring but it builds the foundation for me..😁..now just play fingerstyle guitar as hobby..😁👍🏻

I'm 46 and didn't start until I was 39/40. I think the one thing I would say to new players, "It's gonna hurt". No one ever told me how bad your finger tips hurt until ya develop the finger strength and calluses. Start with something super simple like just an easy strumming pattern and changing from C -> Am. Then ya can start adding a little flair with C major 7 and A sus2. A lot of simple things ya can do starting out to build up finger strength, calluses, and still play some music.

OH yea! That's a good point. Also, you lose your calluses pretty quickly when you don't play. Or maybe I dont lose them but they definitely feel more tender when I dont play for a short while.

I wish someone told me... "even if you have a predisposition to play guitar, it will still be challenging mastering fast chord changes and nailing those frets in the right spot..." but it hasn't discouraged me too much. Just going to take a little longer than what I had anticipated.

Patience...do as I say not as I do. I am VERY impatient. But hey, realizing it is the first step!

Building on your first point, when I peruse music-related forums it pains me when I read “I’m in my twenties, is it too late to learn how to play guitar?” It is hard to read that statement with ANY age. While I agree that the young have the biological advantage of a more agile and pliable brain, what most lack is monumentally critical for “learning” how to play guitar-or any other instrument. And what gets lost in the conversation is how many early starters give up because they lack these personal characteristics and abilities that are more often associated with maturity and life experience.
Learning how to play an instrument well requires someone to be disciplined/organized, goal-oriented/ focused, persistent/resilient, and constructively reflective-just to name an obvious few. To the degree that anyone with the basic, requisite physical ability to play their chosen musical instrument possesses these skills/characteristics/abilities at any age, they have the potential to excel at their chosen instrument-including guitar.
I believe that a teenager with the above attributes has the advantage of being able to achieve mastery of his/her instrument. But I submit that a healthy seventy-year-old learner with the above-listed characteristics will progress faster and farther in the same amount of time than a teenager who lacks them.
My point is that it is NEVER too late to learn how to play the guitar and fretting about missed opportunities in one’s youth is a useless distraction. Set realistic goals and then, as the late Mythologist Joseph Campbell said, “Follow your bliss!”
Okay, that took 30 minutes off my practice time-argh! 😊

Yea! But that is also a fun thing to learn as you go.
