How Singapore Built a Stable Society

  • Singapore suffered from race riots sparked by deep political and economic differences in 1964, tensions that contributed to the decision to separate from Malaysia in 1965. To avoid the mistakes of the past, the Singaporean government entrenched multiracialism in its major national policies, from education, housing, politics to community development. These policies have helped build a fairly harmonious society and laid foundations for Singapore to become a global economic powerhouse.

      Yes, agree. There will always be critics and narratives on either side: segregation or assimilation, racial unity or cultural genocide, freedom of the press or preventing disinformation, authoritarianism and social stability or liberal democracy and potential social instability. I think the only thing that leaders of a country can do is listen to the criticism but evaluate its merits, and its outcomes will justify if the leaders have made the correct decisions or not. Singapore is one of the few to have the resolute determination to chart its own path and not simply accepting governance advice from others. Lee Kuan Yew did the right thing. I’m a Malaysian and sadly racism is a still a thing today because of uneducated politicians. Most Malaysians (Malay, Chinese, Indian, Indigenous) have already live harmoniously but there are still a group of Malay that are still very racist because they were influenced politically. If you have access to Malaysian secondary school history textbook, they interpret Lee Kuan Yew as a threat to the sovereignty of Malaysia and the Malay race so Abdul Rahman (1st Malaysian prime minister) expelled Singapore from Malaysia federation in order to protect the sovereignty of Malay and Malaysia. But you can see for yourself the difference between a diversify Singapore and Malay dominated Malaysia. FYI Malaysia is still imposing the Malay only prime minister rule.

      @gj9544 3 роки тому +11

      @@GardeniaInc this is not about grateful or not. The problem is with the political racism. You need to understand China and India are different from Malaysia and Singapore. Their race are like 80-90 percent are the same whereas Malaysia and Singapore race percentage are high among races. For example 40% Malay, 25% Chinese, 15% Indian and 10% Indigenous races. You can’t compare China and India with Singapore and Malaysia. If you’re in Malaysia you will know how racist the politicians are. The Asian racism in America are driven by the covid pandemic and the racist Donald Trump administration. You also need to understand that Malaysia is a federation which is join by Sarawak and Sabah so if you say that Malaysia is Malay dominant you are totally wrong. One more thing, do not put Chinese and communist as one cause that statement is very racist and you need to know that most Chinese people fled China because of the Japanese occupation and oppression from the China communist party.

      Tbh in the medium to long term it is an unstable, expensive and dangerous social strategy to tolerate/promote multiculturalism (as well as to maintain it). Although singapore did not have a choice in the matter, I think every country should try to reduce the amount of non-internal outside cultures and ethnic groups from integrating into the country as it produces many advantages such as:
      1. It will reinforce and solidify the social harmony fairly indefinitely.
      2. Will compel citizens and governments to allocate as much money, effort, time and resources into maintaining and developing the economy (instead of wasting money on social issues they can allocate money to more efficient and economically sustainable projects or ventures).
      3. They can become more cohesively united and so can execute economic and social reforms more effectively (less social challenges and a healthy environment for proper development is usually hindered by multiculturalism.
      4. Reforms can be strictly implemented to improve the quality of education and life of one internal population without neglecting another population (which will get the economy rolling, solidify it's foundations and totally prevent any racial discriminarion from arising; as there will be a lack of racial diversity).

    Bloomberg has not covered the full spectrum of racial harmony in Singapore. They forgot to mention, and equally important too, how national service which forces young men of all races to serve in compulsory military service for 3 years (then) played a huge role on getting Singaporeans to build up their understanding of each other. Even more so and important was that during the riots of 1969, this multi-racial was deployed for the first time to enforce the curfew which was of great significance - the generations of young and multi racial Singaporeans have to defend what this new nation was to be, one that is multi cultural and multi racial. They had to make this nation work.

I’m not suggesting it’s a utopian dream or that Singapore is the be all and end all; it realised that its biggest asset was its citizens and it has invested in education, finance/economics and trying to build a contemporary society. Yet, inequality does exist, Singapore is an expensive place to live due to the high cost of living and there’s an unhealthy reliance on a working long arduous hours.

      @Danny Archer
      I'm South African, and I'd like to point out that you are engrossly biased.
      _"Racial tensions between minorities and Blacks today are far higher than than they ever were during Apartheid."_
      That is one hell of a distorted perspective you got there ou. And is a clear indication of the lifestyle and environment that you _"minorities"_ typically live in, and those are _"ethnic bubbles"_ .
      You live in your suburbs and on your farms, hidden-away from South African, with limited interaction with _"Blacks"_ , that you have developed this distorted view of what is happening in South Africa.
      Which explains the _"we don't want to ruled by Blacks"_ sentence you've just spewed.
      It would be insightful for you to know that NO ONE in South Africa -unless wealthy, or well-connected, has any say in executive government.
      ANC supporters are the bottom rung of power, then you have ANC officials, then ANC elite, and alongside them, are the "MINORITY" multi-millionaires and billionaires that have them on a regular payroll.
      You should understand that, regardless of whether you agree or not, BLACKS still do have it harder than "minorities" and those are facts.
      But "Blacks" do not have a functioning system for them to get out of this struggle.
      You _"minorities"_ have A LOT of well-to-do individuals in your communities. You AT LEAST have more leverage for economic independence that can loosen the clutches of bad governance experienced by all of us, so my advice -use it.
      And this is assuming -by the way, that you're an Afrikaner and middle class.
      But I will give you credit in providing a more apt comparison than I did. It was insightful.

    Great PR video. As someone who lived in Singapore for years, I have faced racism on a daily basis. If you are an Indian, 8 out of 10 house owners will not want to rent to you. If you try to speak to someone on the street asking for some help, you will receive a very bitter look. But you can see how they treat a white guy in exact same situations to know how racist they are. My daughter came from school many days and said no one will speak to her as she is darker. Over the years, I have been given many lame excuses as to why they behave that way by my Chinese colleagues, but every one knows it is racism.

      Multiracial harmony will forever be a work in progress. Racism can't be removed completely, but we can at best stem it and minimize it as much as possible, be it through education or regulations. If you want to just base it on singapore's context, then yes i see why you're bitter from your experience and i am sorry for that. But I'd advise for you to look at other parts of the world. Racism here no longer escalates to the level of claiming lives, but that's not the case elsewere in the world. You'd fear for your family members all the time. And in case, you think my words don't mean anything, I am myself an Indian, with many friends from different races.

Unfortunately, recent immigrants from PRC, India and the Philippines are reticent about assimilating into the local culture and practise discriminatory hiring practices. My local Indian friends are very upset about the discriminatory behaviour they encounter with Indian PRs and immigrants. Likely due to the caste system, they look down on our local Indians which is just deplorable. So you can't fault Singaporeans who don't approve of such behaviour. I have personally seen how Indian PRs are so uppity that they refuse to hold the lift doors for incoming passengers as they think it's beneath them.
