He said colonialists and there were more than just the Brits at that, the French (Vietnam) the Belgians (Congo) the Dutch (Surinam and other South American territories) and the Germans were very active in on the African continent ie Namibia, Togo among others, it was a very natural thing of the time for the superpowers to expand their interests and still quite a natural thing even to this day ie the US in Iraq and Afghanistan, the French in Libya with the help of their allies the U.S and Britain, the Chinese in Taiwan and the Russians in Ukraine.

@@paddyt4043 Paisley was more to blame than any other individual for the sectarian bitterness of the loyalist violence that kept the war going.
Hell isn't hot enough for him.

@@paddyt4043 near the end of his life, Paisley may have changed but even that was to feed his ego and become First Minister.
In 1966, Paisley was the driving force behind loyalist paramilitaries and British sources have even stated that they firmly believe that he funded the false flag bombings at the utility facilities. One of Paisley’s security team was killed at one of the bomb sites, he electrocuted himself trying to flee.
He was connected to Ulster Resistance, along with Peter Robinson and Sammy Wilson. Pictures of the three of them wearing the Ulster Resistance red berets have been published.
Noel Little, whose daughter was a DUP MLA, acquired weapons for Ulster Resistance from South Africa. Some of this shipment made its way into the hands of the Glenanne gang- a motley crew of UDR soldiers, RUC officers and loyalists. Numerous investigations show that this gang were responsible for at least 120 murders, mostly innocent Catholics.
Paisleys hate speeches turned many young Unionists to join loyalist groups as they believed what he was saying. There is a good documentary which interviews loyalists in the Maze and they said they joined because of Paisley. He preyed on their fears and filled them with hate towards their nationalist neighbours.
History will not look kindly on Mr Paisley, even if he did mellow in the years before his death.

@@paddyt4043 nah, he started back peddling towards the end of his life. He opposed the civil rights movement, he opposed the peace process. After GFA that he so bitterly opposed, he noticed it stopped the violence and he was on the wrong side of history.

I think he might have been referring to Ireland being Britain’s Vietnam maybe but if did mean that then I have no idea what he is on about.
I always preferred Martin To Gerry because Martin was always very open about his past, he never denied it, now I am one of those who do believe that Gerry was in the IRA I could be wrong but I do think he was.
I can’t stand the fact the North is still under the UK but the armed struggle is over and though my family were republicans since 1916 I cannot encourage a new armed struggle, too many lives lost.
I don’t want to see the children on both sides being killed, and I don’t want to the deep ingrained hatred, the people on all sides to needs to heal and if there is to be United a Ireland to which I dream of, then both Nationalists and loyalists will have to sit down together celebrate their cultures and also be welcome to United Ireland, but it needs to be through peaceful means.
If violence broke out I would hope so much that people who would make it stop. The
New IRA are not the IRA and they do not represent the people of Ireland at all, they are seen as people who are just extremist blood thirsty and so too are loyalist paramilitaries.

I got the distinct impression that he was making a direct comparison between himself and Ho Chi Mien and by extension Ireland and Vietnam, therefore saying that his relationship to Major was the same as Ho Chi Mien’s relationship to American Presidents and possibly the French
