- Dating from 1959 and released in Technicolor this Walt Disney film, made with the cooperation of the United States Department of Defense, uses music and animation to speculate on the use of space satellite technology (with a coordinated defense network) as a means to modify weather.
“Eyes in Outer Space” (1959) was part of a series of short films, including “Man In Space,” “Man And The Moon,” “Mars And Beyond,” and “Our Friend The Atom,” exploring the world of the future. Buoyed by an optimistic and fantastical belief in the possibilities of technology and space travel, the notion that science might be able to literally wage war on natural threats appeared both feasible and desirable. To emphasize this point, the film opens with a menacing sequence of natural disasters-from floods and hurricanes to tornadoes and lightning storms-destroying homes and cities. Though the efficacy of rainmaking techniques like cloud seeding is debatable, “Eyes in Outer Space” portrays it, along with a array of other mysterious apparatus and weaponry, as part of a comprehensive system of weather control. Thanks to a host of weather-tracking satellites in space, the military is also able to predict weather patterns and plan coordinated attacks against nefarious natural phenomena months in advance. Though these forecasts have yet to come to fruition, the film captures our ongoing cultural fascination with technology and the way our views define our relationship with nature.

At 15:45 it says the future larger satellites will be the key to forecasting and control of weather. Then at 16:00 it shows the future World Wide Weather center.
Thank you Ground Zero for having this on your radio program! I miss the 50's. I was born in 58 but as a 7-8 yr old, read all my Grandfather's Popular Science and Popular Mechanic magazines he had in the attic. Years worth, I spent more hours than it takes to get a degree reading that information.
And 95% of it was pseudo-science or outright fraud.

I remember this Disney documentary and it's on the Walt Disney treasures DVD about Tomorrowland. As a matter of fact, I also remember the narrator on this show and others. Actually one of the satellites reminds me of a ballpoint pen and another reminds me of a peg like on a children's pegboard. But this documentary came out in the same year as Sleeping Beauty.

I had never heard of this film and I wasn't born yesterday. I can't recall anywhere else where plausible explanations have been given like this as to how storms might be pushed around. I think it's mysterious how there was a lot of news about rainmaking in the same era in which UFOs were born. Talk of weather control disappeared but UFO talk is still with us.

For this narrator of this documentary, the weather is shown in some Disney movies including Bambi, The Old Mill, Snow White and the seven Dwarfs, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Mary Poppins along with The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.

16:40 the globe seems to be revealing a reflection over or shine of some kind coming from where Africa's southern Atlantic Ocean would be. 16:49 Africa is completely brown, as though no jungle exists there whatsoever. I compared it with modern satellite images, which all have a wide green belt.

The best way humans can obtain consistent comfortable weather is to stop cutting down all the trees, stop asphalting everything, stop the fossil fuels, stop mono-cropping and taking all fresh water to do so. All life systems including weather were a clockwork us humans gunked up good. We really needed to stop all of this before this documentary/info film was ever made. Most likely too late now.

This was before chaos theory became prominent and with it the realization that it's impossible to accurately predict weather months ahead beyond general trends.
So no, its not a prediction of any kind, its just wishful thinking mirroring the technological optimism that was so widespread back then.
Also people really, really underestimated the energies involved in weather. Your average storm coud has greater kinetic energy than what a large nuclear reactor produces in a day. You simply can't influence in meaningfully beyond the handful of employed measures as cloud seeding which force rain.

1967 Operation Popeye, one guy cloud seeded the ho chi min trail area and did more damage than many thousands of tons of bombs. in 1968-69 at TV show on weather modification (I've forgotten the name) showed what we could do..... including collapsing a hurricane with bombs in the eye. Show was cancelled after a few episodes, "no interest" but it had mine. "Tomorrow is Already Here" robert Jungk 1954 . Book describes a world that existed then not unlike today, including weather modification, the law suits resulting from adverse effects, lightening control and more
