"Let's see, now. What additional overly ridiculous steps can we add to the battery removal process?" - Chief Engineer in charge of Jetta design. Thanks for the vid. I was scratching my head trying to figure this one out!
Thank you, I just used your video this morning to replace my battery. It's 5 degrees out, my fingers are frozen :) Watching your video first saved me the hassle of figuring it out on my own in the cold...
Excellent pictures and explanation. Two additional points. The plate which goes at the bottom front of the battery to hold in down should have the two prongs pointed back toward the rear of the car. These two prongs engage with spots of the VW battery which make it very secure. A PROBLEM: It is very difficult to get the plate screwed in place without cross-threading the screw. It should be handled very delicately. My problem is that someone else before me has always cross-threaded already, thus making it a real struggle to get it right.
Thanks a bunch!! My '03 was hard to turn over and figured it was the battery. the store had 3 sizes for my car.. Didn't know I had to take those other covers off, but seeing this video saved me alot of time. Too awesome thanks Richpin!
Thanks this was very helpful. I happened to use jumper cables to keep the old battery connected to the terminals while installing the new one. Everything went smoothly for me doing this, but it looks like those who want to be cautious should use the OBD memory saver as described.
Thanks Richpin very helpful - I have to take the battery out so to be able to access to the back of the headlight unit and so I can simply change a bulb. What a pain! :-)
Perfect video. Just took about 30 minutes with my Golf. Thanks. You will need to input your radio password afterwards if you don't somehow power in the interim but that's a small price to pay!
Reminds me of when my dad was trying to get the battery out of his car once. He's an older fellow, never owned a modern car (2000 or up) before that one, and after a while of messing with all the plastic and stuff they surrounded the battery with, he ended up pulling it all out and throwing it away. Still makes me laugh.
Hi Rich. In the Haynes manual they say something about having to put in the code for the radio so that the anti-theft program is reset. Can you comment on that?
Thanks so much for a great video 🤘🤘👍👍. Still, nothing beats Japanese cars in simplicity. Why the heck do Germans make it to be such a pain to remove a freaking battery?
@ockap00 I went through the same thing.Bought the battery by what the book said and it was too wide.Best thing to do is what i did and that is to measure the old one and find one to match regardless of numbers.
@spelunkerd I am aware of some cars were the radio will stop working when the battery is disconnected. In this case did not have the time to check that the radio was working.I will keep you apprised of any information if the radio needs to be reset.
Thanks for the clear video - But have a question: Is one of the terminals grounded? I am trying to charge my dead battery in a VW golf and need to know which post is connected to a ground. I realize it's typically the -ve but want to be certain. Thanks
I lost the battery cover to my Jetta will that cause any issues? I don't remember seeing any seals on the cover so I don't think it was there to keep out rain mostly to keep the unsightly view of a battery away but will rain cause any issues if the cover is not in place?
I bet its easier to install a cold air intake than changing a battery on a jetta LOL Nice video Rich very instructional. By the way I got a VW Passat lying at my house and want to fix it. It runs but need help. The oil pressure light comes on what could it be and was wondering how do you know if it has the turbo on it. The eninge is a 1.8T but i dont think he took the turbo out. Would it run without the turbo. I dont thinks so right? Thanks. My passat needs a lot of work done LOL
Question: (Great video by the way! Simplifies it a lot Thank you!) I have a challenge not addressed... the hold-down bolt at the bottom of the battery is rusted and just spins when I turn it with the 13mm socket. So the battery can't be removed until that hold down is undone. It seems to be on a platter. My guess is the nut is welded to that platter and the bolt threads into it... I can't seem to find a way to get a wrench up under the platter. HELP! What can be done. Thanks.
Hey Rich... ah you don't have one in the shop... Well, its in your video at the 3:36 minute mark. That is exactly what is going on. The 13mm socket you have on the end of your ratchet is undoing the hold-down bracket. The nut is welded on the bottom of the base the battery sits upon, and when the bolt is loosened the bracket and bolt come off. Under normal circumstances the nut stays in place. However, mine has rusted off and won't loosen. Just rotates as the ratchet is turned. :( The battery is stuck. I think I will somehow drill out the bolt and bracket. Phrased another way... How can one remove the base the battery sits upon?
How important is the hold down bolt? When putting it back in it slipped and fell down into the car somewhere. I doubt I'll be able to retrieve it easily. Does the battery really knock around that much while driving? None of the other cars I've had used a similar bolt.
Damn. These German engineers are out of control. The most over-engineered cars on the road. You can't even top off the transmission fluid easily on these cars. Everything is made as difficult as possible.
I have a 2000 VW Jetta, I heard that you have to keep power to the car at all times when you're changing the battery otherwise the radio will go into safe mode, yet I don't see you doing that here...any advice?
Why does the negative terminal only have one 10mm bolt as opposed to the positive terminal that has two 10mm bolts to hold it down? My Jetta is in the same condition, and every Jetta battery removal video tutorial I have watched so far appears to be the same, but I'm wondering if it's another missing part in my car.
im looking at my 1999 Bora and its a similar setup but diferent.. more complicated. im contemplating ripping this thing apart as i cant figure out how to remove the fusebox off it.. how bloody complicated does it have to be..
Thank you for the video it was supper helpful! Is it a problem if the replacement battery I have is too tall? Everything seems to work fine, and it was the recommended replacement for my 2.0L, but I can't get the top cover back on because overall the battery is about 1cm to tall. =(
I have a 2003 Jetta. My book says to have a temporary power source before disconnecting the batter. Is this necessary, or can I just disconnect it and continue?
Do you lose all the radio coding and other stuff by disconnecting the battery, don't you need to use a 9volt pp3 or some other method to bridge the leads and prevent the codes from being lost or did you just put them all back in. The reason I ask is I have a used car and need to change the battery but have no codes
Don't you have to continue to provide power to the vw while changing the battery or it will wipe your read outs on the interior consoles? I always had to hook mine up to another vehicle with jumper cables to change my battery.
Do we need to be able to reprogram our car after changing out the battery? We had a mechanic tell us that if you do it yourself the programming gets messed up and your car wont start. Just trying to find out the truth before we do.
Hey man, Ijust changed mine, but now there is nothing working with electricity. no lights, no radio, no remote lock. I thought The old battery went bad because of cold weather here in upstate NY, just changed it but no luck. Any idea?
Exasperating to take the first plastic part off after removing the screws, without breaking the tab since "pushing the little part in" was a no-go. Broke. Pushed the now-exposed metal clip in, snapped off and went flying. Even with broken off plastic part, and missing metal clip, still could not figure how to re-install it, except by accident when forcing. If could do over again, would take off all four screws then try to wiggle both plastic pieces off simultaneously. Maybe nothing would break then!?

+Greg LeMasters So true
Quit your whining. Be lucky you don’t have a Touareg.
Everyting is made to make you go to the dealership!
VW really likes making things more complicated than they need to be. Thanks for the video, it was very helpful.
Yes I know right ?
It’s been a nightmare this winter everything’s breaking it’s -30°C every day here.
Thank you, I just used your video this morning to replace my battery. It's 5 degrees out, my fingers are frozen :) Watching your video first saved me the hassle of figuring it out on my own in the cold...
Fantasy, literally just saved me $50-100! Thanks so much. Plus I can justify buying new tools!
seriously your video is one of the reasons you tube is so successful. hele
pd me and my dad alot, thanks.
Excellent pictures and explanation.

Thanks for the video! It saved me a lot of time figuring out how to get to the hold down clamp.
Already done it previously but could I remember. Clear and concise. Cheers.
Thanks this was very helpful. I happened to use jumper cables to keep the old battery connected to the terminals while installing the new one. Everything went smoothly for me doing this, but it looks like those who want to be cautious should use the OBD memory saver as described.
Thanks for a very informative video. I just swapped the battery in abut 15 minutes. You Rock!
Now i know what parts I am missing to restore my vw mk4. Thanks man!.
Jonathan Abarca - Same here, I'm missing that hold down clamp for the battery. O de plano el dueño anterior se lo quitó o se lo robó su mecánico.

just needed socket sizes and Im glad you included it thanks.
Perfect video. Just took about 30 minutes with my Golf. Thanks. You will need to input your radio password afterwards if you don't somehow power in the interim but that's a small price to pay!
+Skyler Erasmus If that is the case then that would be a perfect case for a memory saver as in my video here ua-cam.com/video/CWQXGPp7i0E/v-deo.html
Same steps worked on my 2007 City Golf. Thanks for uploading this great How-to!
Thank you so much for taking time to make this video. Great job!
Awesome video. I'm glad I watched this before attempting the removal. Keep em coming!
Thanks for sharing, I was scratching my head a bit at how to get to that bracket on the bottom without destroying anything :)
Thanks for the video. It helped us figure out how to remove the battery cover.
Close enough instructions to help with my 2010 Jetta battery. Removing the bottom clip held by the 13mm bolt that does the trick. Thanks!
On this car it is very important to get the correct battery because of all the stuff they put on top of it.
thanks a lot!!! you got me through the battery change.
i cant believe i found this awesome video!! thak you!! hahaha i just couldnt remove my battery before watching this video!! :D
Very useful, thanks, I needed to do this in order to get space to put a near headlamp bulb in,
@bluebladex3 Two things that can give you a oil pressure drop is the pump and bearings. The turbo will be part of the exhaust system near the manifold.
Thanks, I wish more videos were as good as yours.
aiy roland how can we make more money?

Great clear video and instructions.
Thanks!!! Its amazing how vw complicated this one
Was thinking exactly the same thing.
VW complicates EVERYTHING.
Thanks richpin, just what I needed!

Glad it worked for you.

@vpinto89 There are some cars like that in which case you need a special code that came with the car to activate the radio.
How do I find the code for my 2003 Jetta TDI?

Thanks Richpin for all your video :-)
Hey thank you so much for this video. It helped so much.
Yes it does take a little faniggling.
very detail explanation. great
This was very helpful, Thank u!
Thanks for this. Huge help.
The bottom clamp could be a hook quick release with a ball bearing pin and a metal pull ring
I´ve found it very helpful. Znks.

Get to the hold down bolt sir with a long extension with a 13 mm.
@Infinitrium I have been there done that very strange.
@heeeektor It is quite different.
On this Jetta after I replace the battery there were no problems.
What is the piece above the battery?
Hey man, Ijust changed mine, but now there is nothing working with electricity. no lights, no radio, no remote lock.

Nope. I called AAA and they jump started. Since than Never had any problems.
