I believe a timber hitch starts with a half hitch. For pictures and all see Wikipedia. In the video: after making the loop around the standing end with the running end, instead of going around the top of itself right to left, fold it under to make the half hitch, then loop it around in the opposite direction (left to right) 2 times or more. If I'm not mistaken, this will make the hitch more secure against unraveling. However, many people use your technique and report that it's effective.
All of the knots, hitches and lashing on my videos are catered to help scouts learning the methodology used in the Scout handbook, and some of the the requirement when tying knot that it should be easy to tie, stay tight, and easy to untie, as far as I know there is no half hitches when you tie a Timber Hitch. It could be a variation of a Timber hitch which I am not familiar with. Thanks again.
I have seen both ways too, and completely understood your explanation. The tree guys seem to use the half hitch, and under wrap knot sometimes, like you describe. In logging, everything is cables and chokers, so it doesn't really apply. But, just dragging one log for firewood, it seems either way would be fine. He's doing the boy scout book way.
Please demonstrate it around chunks of plywood so that the person would be lifting 10ft to up to 50 ft using chunks of plywood 1 x 2 ft 2 x 2 ft 2 x 4 ft 4 x 4 ft and 4 by 8 ft all with Timber hitch please
This is the best tutorial!!!
Thanks for the pin!
Being a merchant Navy student, tomorrow I have my test on all the hitches and this tutorial was the best! Thanks a Vaughan!
Thanks. It's a pretty simple knot, but I always like seeing it demonstrated instead of reading in a book. Yours in scouting!
