God I love how you get all giddy when you get all those ancestral visions at around 40:00 :3 puts a big smile on my face too when decks like this just work
my only thought is that it's typically not the right play to kill your opponents bloom, since they crack it and go off, though you're right in this case. It's also worth noting he had to deal 2 to himself too to K. Command
This was by far the best against the odds deck i've ever seen lmao. I lol'd so hard at your tiny high pitched screams when getting wrecked xD This was awesome.
so i think with the thoughtseizes and the fetches and shocks you probably could have considered death's shadow. like shadow into vision seems pretty deece.
You missed outs a few times. Against Living End you still had "Nexus -> Evoke Shriekmaw, cascade a wrath" to live. Basically if you can cascade you might as well do that instead of scooping, you have so much random crap in your deck who knows what'll happen? :P
I'm glad you won the match against Living End, but I think there was a minor punt in the sideboarding: those Fulminators should've also been auto-includes.
"What are the odds of you walking out of here with that jacket???" *throws knife* "Better than average" "Yeah I'll go along with that" /end Crocodile Dundee quote Seth "stepping up my basic land game" SaffronOlive
is it possible for you to do annotations at the start for the combo? I watch these videos on autoplay, so I miss the deck tech video explaining whats going on. love these, keep it up
Interesting deck, indeed. I would love to see you play my Tainted Immortality deck for against the odds though. Comboing Beacon of Immortality with Tainted Remedy for an instant kill, put into an Esper control shell. Mystical Tutor to search for the Beacon at the end of turn is pretty decent most of the time. Here is the list, since you can't really link to them in youtube comments. I might even add a copy of Bontu's Last Reckoning to the sideboard when Hour of Devastation is released, since you can tutor for it with Dimir Machinations. Anyway, here's the list: Manabase: 2x Drowned Catacomb 3x Flooded Strand 2x Ghost Quarter 2x Glacial Fortress 1x Godless Shrine 2x Hallowed Fountain 2x Island 2x Isolated Chapel 2x Plains 2x Shambling Vent 2x Swamp 1x Temple of Silence 1x Watery Grave Enchantments: 2x Detention Sphere 3x Tainted Remedy Instants: 2x Beacon of Immortality 3x Blessed Alliance 2x Condemn 1x Cryptic Command 2x Fatal Push 2x Mana Leak 1x Mystical Teachings 2x Path to Exile 2x Remand 1x Spell Snare 1x Sphinx's Revelation 2x Think Twice Sorceries: 1x Dimir Machinations 3x Inquistion of Kozilek 2x Lingering Souls 1x Painful Truths 2x Supreme Verdict Planeswalkers; 1x Gideon Jura Sideboard: 1x Aetherling 1x Anguished Unmaking 1x Blood Baron of Vizkopa 2x Collective Brutality 1x Damnation 1x Gideon Jura 1x Jace, Architect of Thought 1x Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet 1x Negate 1x Relic of Progenitus 2x Rest in Peace 1x Timely Reinforcements 1x Dispel
At 2:38 Seth sounds like he is talking while either exhaling some kind of smoke, or perhaps vaping? I mean...Seth looks like a big time hippie with that hair and long beard. What are the odds he's smoking some dank weed while playing moto all day? I'd be willing to be he smokes pot. Hahaha love you Seth!
Nice dude! I know your pain, I thought I would die a smoker, and probably FROM smoking, but I bought a decent vape with a tank a little over a year ago and havent had a cigarette since! I am proud of you Seth, quitting that shit is not easy, even when you first start vaping you till want that cigarette, it has that....i dont know, that BURN. Its hard to describe. Either way I'm glad you are doing something healthier. Lets hope scientists dont find out that something in our vape liquid causes cancer 100x more than cigarettes haha!

I've noticed that you can tell a deck is ad nauseum if they play temples, and that a deck is generally living end if they play fast lands. Why is that? ie why aren't those decks playing shocks or conversely more decks playing non-shocks?
Planeswalker999 both decks play fetches and shocks as it's just the most consistent way to build a 3+ color mana base. From there it usually depends on the deck's needs, but fastlands are usually what takes up the slots in most decks as they allow dual colors in the early game w/o the loss of life. Normally a deck can't afford to take the first couple of turns off to play tapped lands unless the effect is very powerful (i.e. A manland) Ad Nauseum is an exception because it spends the first 3-4 turns digging for the win. Hope this helped answer your questions Grammar :/
Well, Thoughtseize targets a player, not an opponent, so there was definitely a legal target! Don't think this is a deck where Thoughtseizing yourself is going to get you places, of course, but might be a relevant line in Reanimator decks?
31:10 you could have dropped Nexus and evoked Shriekmaw hoping to hit a Damnation. It would be a long shot, but conceding in that situation is simply giving up on a nonzero chance to win.
I know you wanted to use Cruel Ultimatum but the cascade ability you based this on probably kept putting it back to the bottom so you were wildly unlikely to ever get it in your hand without something to tutor for it
why doesnt this deck play bring to light ? (i know it cant get nexus) but it gets thragtusk or a wrath or cryptic (or everything else basicly) and if you cast it with a nexus out its the same cmc as shriekmaw or thragtusk and if it gets hit by cascade its basicly ancestral vision (it only gets hit by cruelultimatum and grave titan)
As sweet as this deck was, I think it needed more life gain to not die to some of the decks you faced. More Thragtusk could have been used and maybe Kitchen Finks as well.
Hey guys, EpicWarfare here (the guy that played the Mono Black Burn deck in the video). I'm here to share with you the list that I have been using since people seem to be interested in it! I'm flattered that people think the deck is cool and would love some opinions on it. tappedout.net/mtg-decks/08-06-17-xmT-mono-black-burn/
The biggest problem is that the good cascade cards aren't legal in Modern, the UG Elf (Shardless Agent) is Legacy-only and Bloodbraid Elf is banned, so most of the cascade spells that are legal are pretty weak.
22 minutes in during match three why couldnt you just drop the grave titan and potentially stabilize, you didnt have to pain with confluence and it would have provided you with three blockers so even if he had removal you were ok there, at 1 but ok.....am i missing something?
johnnyandthepnuemoni I'm well aware of the lab maniac plan. However it does fold pretty hard against his hand disruption. My question was also directed toward Seth. As it was his decision making that I was curious at. Not how his opponents deck works.
When you try to do something cool, but could easily win the game otherwise, do you ever play suboptimally to give opponent illusion of hope so they don't concede before you get to do cool stuff? \
Instead of mainphase Snapcaster for Abrupt Decay in game 2 against Bogles, it's better to let them untap with Spiritdancer so they unload their hand full of enchantments onto it and you can it it with Abrupt Decay afterwards. Generates more card advantage that way, and even if they decide to remove Snapcaster you're still usually getting a 3-for-1 or better.
Serious misplay in match 3 game 3. Instead of Pathing the opponent's creature, he should have blocked with Snapcaster and pathed his own so that he could play Grave Titan the next turn with the mana. That would have bought him enough time to stabilize.
worth considering, for sure. It would be pretty lame to hit that with cascade but only the Grave Titan and Cruel Ultimatum are big enough for that to happen, so it's not as easy to write off for that reason compared to mana leak, negate, etc
I bet it's future SaffronOlive playing that Mono-Black Burn deck against present SaffronOlive.
this is the funniest thing ive seen all day
nah its the guy that beat him with minotaurs back to shame him once more
GaaradancepartyX what's the minotaur video?
Kinda interested to know what else was in that black burn deck.
That first game makes me Irrationally upset. So what if you have to shock yourself with K-command. It's better then losing the game on the spot.
Anthony Bailey agreed
39:14
If one of your poll options isn't relic tribal, we will have to assume you betrayed us

I like how he flickers his hand even in MTGO.
To be Relic Tribal, there are 11 cards in modern with Relic in it's name. Good Luck! Truly Against the Odds for that!
Opponent has Bogles. Hand: Bolt, Path, Push, Cut, Shriekmaw.
Always great to draw the wrong half of the deck :>
Why not destroy bloom?
Seth punts quite a bit.
FoodReact that's my thought exactly. Game 1 kill the bloom EoT, make sure your not combo'd....
my only thought is that it's typically not the right play to kill your opponents bloom, since they crack it and go off, though you're right in this case. It's also worth noting he had to deal 2 to himself too to K. Command
I hope the summary of his games at years end is just the list of every punt back to back.
Followed by the typical mispronunciation.
Two damage doesn't matter when anything else guarantees your death.
"Lets store up some counters for the harsh Upstate New York winter"
I love your Against the Odds series. I hope you never stop.
That second match was epic af
Can you make a series of against the odds where you play mono color burn in every color?
Tren Lee Green burn OP with hornet sting.
Tren Lee This please
But wouldnt it be interesting to see it with some good 'ol Saffron jank?
"Against the odds: mono-red burn"
Mon -white burn doesn't exist. PLAY IT SETH!
I don't know why, but that first Tim Allen grunt when Whir of Invention came out nearly killed me with laughter xD

@22:00 shoulda blocked the wildwood with ojutai, you can turn on your wraths that way
At 15:43 isn't the better line to just Ultimatum? You draw 3 and gain 5 and still have mana for possible Paths/Fatal Push off whatever you draw?
:D The face you make when you find out Saffron is from Upstate NY!!!!!!!!

Man you consistently keep the worst hands in magic lol.

Why did you not cast thoughtseize of cascade? It doesn't have that restriction on sorcories as far as I know.
Thoughtseize requires an opponent to target, and ad naus opponent had a leyline of sanctity out, which means thoughtseize had no legal targets
Well, Thoughtseize targets a player, not an opponent, so there was definitely a legal target! Don't think this is a deck where Thoughtseizing yourself is going to get you places, of course, but might be a relevant line in Reanimator decks?
Silfir Oh yeah, it does target players, doesn't it? Woops. The things that are easy to forget.
At 1:23 Seth should have used K-Command to destroy the Lotus Bloom on the spot instead of letting his opponent untap with it !
(i know it cant get nexus) but it gets thragtusk or a wrath or cryptic (or everything else basicly)
and if you cast it with a nexus out its the same cmc as shriekmaw or thragtusk
and if it gets hit by cascade its basicly ancestral vision (it only gets hit by cruelultimatum and grave titan)
"Gotta take out these fatal push's" *takes out path* 😂😂😂
Seth: ahhh another thoughtsieze
MTGO: JUST FUCKING CAST THEM GOD DAMN IT
I was worried about out life total, but maybe I shouldn't have been since our opponent was one living end.
if you came here looking for it ... it starts at 8:19
relic tribal against the odds
Seth didn't your Mom ever tell you not to play with your food. That Living End Game 2 was brutally slow.
whit this many one-off gifts ungiven might be good.
also all the big minions feels overkill, we win anyway if we have Maelstrom Nexus.
As sweet as this deck was, I think it needed more life gain to not die to some of the decks you faced. More Thragtusk could have been used and maybe Kitchen Finks as well.
Why not wait with abrupt decay'ing the spiritdancer until they tried to enchant it, thereby 2-1'ing them?
Because the opponent would draw a card so I'm not sure we'd really come out ahead.
Hey guys, EpicWarfare here (the guy that played the Mono Black Burn deck in the video). I'm here to share with you the list that I have been using since people seem to be interested in it! I'm flattered that people think the deck is cool and would love some opinions on it.

i would love to see this deck play vs. pozna xD
Seth was in heaven in that last game. Lol
@ 27:51 isnt that a mtgo bug he had double outburst but it didn't show it in the revealed card slot
um why not play other cascade spells like that blue green elf or cards that manipulate the top of your deck?
The biggest problem is that the good cascade cards aren't legal in Modern, the UG Elf (Shardless Agent) is Legacy-only and Bloodbraid Elf is banned, so most of the cascade spells that are legal are pretty weak.
do you ever lose to living end....?
Reflecting Pool would have been great substitute for Mana Confluence
Why play relic with snapcaster?
31:10, nexus, evoke shriekmaw, cascade into damnation? unlikely but possible, yes?
I spent ten minutes trying to figure out what SC stood for until I realized it was 5C.
WE NEED THAT BLACK LIFELOSS DECK
Why no reflecting pool in the list?
22 minutes in during match three why couldnt you just drop the grave titan and potentially stabilize, you didnt have to pain with confluence and it would have provided you with three blockers so even if he had removal you were ok there, at 1 but ok.....am i missing something?
What does "janky" mean
why no leyline of sanctity against ad nauseam?
doesn't matter lab maniac is an alternative win con
Bernardo Macedo true, however shutting off the ability to instant kill you through damage is rather important for slower decks against ad nauseam
theodore goodall they instant kill you with lab maniac too. Play ad nauseam into maniac hold up serum visions ggs
Spoils naming a card not in the deck + maniac works too
johnnyandthepnuemoni I'm well aware of the lab maniac plan. However it does fold pretty hard against his hand disruption. My question was also directed toward Seth. As it was his decision making that I was curious at. Not how his opponents deck works.
Gosh darn it. Here's Seth playing with an almost non functional deck meanwhile I'm lucky to go positive at a tournament with GR pumaler!
why no bring to light in the deck?
I haven't seen underworld dreams in like 10 years
"let's get steam vents... I guess this means we get blood crypt" XD
Brad Young he drew a blue source, so didn't need to fetch one.
Yeah, we didn't have a steam vents :)
This deck looks like a cube deck on steroids.
When you try to do something cool, but could easily win the game otherwise, do you ever play suboptimally to give opponent illusion of hope so they don't concede before you get to do cool stuff? \
i need that OP ad naus list im on 0 whirs and i feel i should run 1 or 2
Tribal Relic!!!! A bad lantern control deck
Alex White It does not. Spirit Dancer draws a card for each aura they cast and makes it that much closer to their next creature.
Good call, forgot that Spiritdancer actually has text. Ignore me!
What modern creature can even profitably block the 1/1 Skulk?
There isn't many, really. It's also just a 1/1 though.
A 1/1 token creature could block it. Like an elemental made by Young Pyromancer. Also Thraben Inspector can block it and live.
Why the invocations seth
Snapcaster, *cascade* into Path? That's not how you're supposed to Snapcast
Game 2 is when someone brings their monoblack standard deck to modern
Took you all of four turns to punt a game away. You even said "Command can destroy an artifact"!
Aw, man, I was hoping to see myself, but I beat the Panharmonicon version, not this one. Ah, well, that's how it goes.
Yeah, I ended up scraping that one, probably because you beat me so badly.
I was the E&T player, by the way. I was hype off of having beaten you for the rest of the day, lol.
Serious misplay in match 3 game 3. Instead of Pathing the opponent's creature, he should have blocked with Snapcaster and pathed his own so that he could play Grave Titan the next turn with the mana. That would have bought him enough time to stabilize.
"can never draw too many cards" seth 2017
relic tribal for next against the odds
why didn't you lightning bolt your opponent instead of yourself?
playing around mana tithe..... lsv status
That Bogles list...
God the punts are real in game 1
Wouldn't want to be the one playing against this deck IRL O_O
WTB Relic Tribal deck
Why doesn't grave titan save him at 22:12?
We couldn't cast it because Mana Confluence makes us lose one life.
Thanks a lot i missed that i haven't played with that land.
relic tribal: reliquary tower, for land........
m1g1 - just kill the lotus bloom with kolaghan's command?
Beats tier one deck. Loses to random homebrew.
I will be disappointed if relic tribal doesnt get played now.
i know people have a love affair with cryptic command but putting it in a 5 color deck is just silly.
v.x richards cryptic has been played in 5 color for a long time. Gabe Nassif had it in his 5 color control list he used to win PT Kyoto.
I can't believe you got got by mana tithe
it's not jank if you lose to it Seth
should have run Bring to Light, but nvm did even work without
worth considering, for sure. It would be pretty lame to hit that with cascade but only the Grave Titan and Cruel Ultimatum are big enough for that to happen, so it's not as easy to write off for that reason compared to mana leak, negate, etc
Bring To Light wouldn't be useless off of a cascade because you can cast your ancestral vision if there are any in your library.
You lost to the jank! haahahha
Snapcaster Mage BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BOO this man BOOOOO
Did anyone else notice how loose his plays were
why are you even playing thoughtseize in this deck if you never, ever, ever want to cascade it
So spicey.
