  • Director Todd Field, actors Cate Blanchett & Nina Hoss, and composer Hildur Guonadóttir discuss TÁR, a Main Slate selection of this year’s festival, moderated by NYFF Artistic Director, Dennis Lim.
    The charisma and emotional precision of Cate Blanchett are put to astounding use in this deft showcase for the actor’s musical artistry, a stinging portrait of a world-famous orchestra conductor’s gradual unraveling that is the first film in sixteen years from director Todd Field (In the Bedroom, Little Children). A Focus Features release.

    I think it's indiciative of how much respect Todd Field has for the cast and crew that he had the credits for this film play at the beginning of the film, not at the end.

      Because he is the conductor of this film and the crew is his orchestra. That's why the names were formatted to look like an orchestra group.

    TAR is incredible to the point that I believed that it was a biography and the fact that the film is fictional shows the strength of everyone involved, as a massive operatic and symphony fan, I was enthralled by the idea of an insight into a maestro. Bravo

    I read many comparing Blanchett's performance to Daniel Day Lewis in There Will Be Blood. And here we have Todd Field cosplaying as Daniel Plainview, neat.

    Saw the film last night in Toronto. It's fantastic. A little slow in the pacing at times, needed a bit more exposition, but it's still great. Just glad Todd Field finally made another film!

      It has 17 straight minutes of exposition disguised as an interview. I loved it. One of those movies you keep thinking about long after you're done watching it.

      @@adamg4912 Yes absolutely... well disguised exposition the WHOLE film. It's almost so much about exposition, that you sometimes miss the action parts! For example, I completely missed all the symbolic shit about the maze in the book and in the metronome!

    I can tell you from painful personal experience, this could be called 'Philip Glass played by a woman' - except that he has enough power that he'll always get away with it. He tried to destroy my career in order to cover up his personal crap, with such brutality. The emails shown in the film are almost verbatim of those he sent to people, I almost felt they'd stolen my story with this film - but I guess people who crave power have these narratives in common. I'm glad he did it in a strange way, because it taught me a lot about what I don't want to emulate, despite how shallow our culture is.

    She should accept his compliment. Not very sympathetic to react like that. If you have had this success for 25 years, you should be able to see it that way. She shouldn't act like she's not up to par.

      Are you saying composing a score for a movie is hardly anything. A great score can really make a movie. Thats a silly comment to say doing a score is nothing

    • @focuspulling
      @focuspulling Рік тому

      @@65g4 Completely the opposite. It's widely known (and evidenced right there in the final cut of the movie, if you pay close attention) that the director decided to use almost nothing of the music she delivered, which was already barely composed and more in the direction of her video game sound designs that marginally qualify as music. The art and craft of composition is hard work, mastery of counterpoint and harmony, idiomatic writing for instruments, and more. Not writing ditties on synths for Xbox and PS4.
