As an absolute beginner who's not taking guitar that seriously, so I'm just teaching myself some chords, this video saved my sanity (and prevented me from smashing my borrowed guitar into pieces 😂). Personally, it was the wrist advice that saved me. This video deserves so much more attention than it has of now. Cheers James ❤
Thank you!! I heard some of these tips from others but you definitely have the most detailed and informative video and I feel like I really understand proper hand form now. Thanks you!
James, do you know I have asked so many of these so called guitar lessons for beginners about why I keep hitting other strings and this video description is exactly what I wanted to know tf for that... Thanks hopefully I can start to play cords without bum notes soon.
This is like a reset for me. I finally got dedicated with practice for the last 15 months. Been a beginner for 30 years prior. You know there's this thing called life which hindered practice. Anyway, I loathe the open Am to Dm shift. One would think it's the easiest but there's always the muted b or e string. Hopefully, your tip about pushing the wrist out more will get me over this hump. Thank you. Practice practice practice! ❤
Something that took me a loooonnng time to realize....RELAX. You made a very good point about the shoulder. It matters! Another thing I would say is focus on the pressure of your fingers on the fingerboard. You only need enough to sound the note, not push the string through the wood ( which I did unintentionally). Techninique surely will heilp, but I would also suggest practice pushing the string ever so lightly (actually muting) and keep plucking while slowly increasing fretting pressure until the note actually sounds. You might be surprised to find it doesn't take as much pressure as you think. This helps to RELAX the fretting hand as well, making practice less tiring and more enjoyable. Good video sir.
Ah, nice. Practical advice. Chord improvement just takes hours to get better at (about 200 in my case). I didn't believe I could ever switch chords, but it's coming along after a year of practice.
very helpful. Its great that you went really into detail. i am learning e guitar and realised that when playing scales my pinky touches the string below :)
I been having trouble playing c chord not because of its placement but because everytime i play it i accidentally play a unwanted string thanks for this vid
i am curled up like some seashell fish, but this wrist forward thing, is what i needed. i always thought i had misformed left hand and playing guitar would never be possible for me. now i need to learn how to not sit like an embryo!
Hello James! It's Humberto here. Thanks for the pencil tip, it's a great tip. I've got a question: I've small hands (I know it's rubbish to think it's something that stops me to play) and I've got some dificulties when I need to mute the 6th and th 5ths strings with my thumb. The 6th it's kind of ok, but when it comes to both it's a challenge. I'm always paying attention to ergonomics so I don't end up hurting myself in the future. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks a lot! P.S.: One more question: Is the facebook group still available? I tryied to join but wasn't sucessfull...
Hi Humberto thanks for watching again!!! Keep an eye on my uploads i have a video scheduled to come out in a few weeks where i talk about this. The facebook group hasn't got the traction i hoped it had. I am very active on facebook though if you search 'James Practicelikeapro' Ill happily connect with you over there. Keep stumming J
Do you have any tips for someone with small hands? I have trouble with the C chord stretching far enough that I do bump the string below. Also any tips on the D chord I really struggle with that one? I push my wrist out and go on my finger tips but I still slightly brush the string below.
I can empathize. I also have small hands along with short fingers. Plus I play a full size classical guitar with a wide neck. Ouch! I am seriously thinking of getting a smaller size classical just because of how much trouble I'm having, especially with that dratted C chord. And forget playing any barred chords! 😮 Anyway, I hope you're managing and improving your playing. Good luck.
I know this isn't a beginner chord and i accept i probably wont play it well yet but, how in the world do you do c#m4?? I cannot figure out how to barre my pointer finger even without adding my other figers into the equation 😅
@@justgoclockwise2499 Try to use the very tips of you're fingers and perhaps a slight twist of the finger? It's really hard with out seeing you play it. If you need some more help send me a Dm on Instagram. J
idk how to explain this. But my index finger shape is weird which restrains me of playing guitar ever. Actually the index finger tip is a the finger nail. It doesn't have a finger tip. It is the pointed side of like "V". So, that one pointed end is the nail and the gap underneath the nail. And that is apart from fingerprint area of index finger. I cant touch strings to the fret with my index finger. And if I press with fingerprint area, it mutes all other strings. I practises a lot but at this point, I think no practise can change the physical shape of my index finger, idk what to do. Please come forward and talk if anyone who's having such an issue, how to deal with this?

I appreciate the tips. Just learning and the chords are much more challenging than just hitting notes so the tips will be put to use for sure.

Very helpful thank you! Now my issue is keeping my wrist from hurting so much and being able to move my fingers to other parts.

I’m pretty stupid I don’t know why but my fingers don’t like guitar I tried and tried but I quit
That’s what everyone says. You gotta just keep trying
A major is my hardest
@@scottkellogg8145try a minor
I am having trouble just setting my fingers in position for the chards, I'm walking them?
Does anyone always seem to mute the B string when playing a cord? This is really infuriating ,as its the only cord I struggle with.
Is it all chords you play or just one?
@@PracticeLikeAPro sorry ,I should of said it’s just the C cord.

Tysm, now ik why i can't play them yet, I got long nails
Im glad we could help you out! thanks for watching!
. When i play the c chord with my muted thumb, my palm is touching the last e string
Mute with your middle finger instead
"push your wrist out" thank you
Im on the g0d d4mn tip tops of my fuxing fingers but I still touch
I’m still convinced my fingers are too weak and too thick
My ring finger was a stupid fat tip, unlike the other fingers, it's a bitch. With certain chords it's just impossible to not touch the string below.
but my finger tip hurts
the problem is its hurts as hell
Thank you very much!
