This comparison requires two premises. First, the two countries are geographically adjacent. Second, the war starts tomorrow morning.
Considering this assumption, it is virtually impossible for japan to defeat france without the help of the US or a third country.
The first reason is that japan's actual combat experience is very limited. Since japan was defeated in WW2, it has never actually waged a war directly or independently. In war, experience and data are as important as capital.
Second, their air defense system is very weak. In particular, the number of igloos protecting fighter jets on the ground is severely insufficient. This is a problem that many international military think tanks always point out.
Third, japan cannot possess missiles due to their constitutional restrictions. The proportion of missiles in modern warfare is increasing day by day. Japan possesses sufficient technological capabilities to develop missiles, but because missiles are strategic assets for attack, so they cannot manufacture missiles. Of course, they could build up missile force within a month at the latest if they wanted to, but it only takes 2 minutes at the most for a french missile to hit the japanese mainland.
Fourth is similar to the third; Japanese weapons tend to be too localized only for japanese terrain. This shares the same reason that their weapons are in low international demand. Japan is an island country, has high humidity, soft land, and many mountains. It's different from general land terrain. This is because they developed their land weapons only for defensive situations. Therefore, even if japan takes control of the sea, it cannot defeat france on land. War is a game that ends only when a flag is planted on the ground.
The final reason is that their asymmetric power is quite poor. Japan has nuclear reprocessing facilities, so it can start developing nukes as early as tomorrow morning, just like the missiles mentioned above, but france is already one of the oldest nukes countries. Of course, the performance of nukes is also impossible to compare.
In addition, japan's special forces are actually difficult to classify as special forces. Of course, I do not mean to criticize their hearts in serving their country. However, it is just objective evaluation. Their special forces capabilities are far below those of france, even their neighbor south korea. An US green beret who has experience conducting joint training in both japan and korea said, "In sk, there's a training that special forces candidates undergo every day, while regular members of the japanese 1st airborne division only participate in it once a year." From training to experience, comparing japanese special forces to france's is practically unbalanced.
Of course, i know that the two will never fight, and also respect the sacrifices of japanese soldiers make for their country.
However, realistically, it seems very difficult for japan to be dominant in this comparison.
