    I LOVE this series man. Especially because you’re paying respects to the original modder and not just insulting all the weird jury-rigged stuff he did.
    I’ve done a good number of ugly, frankenstein mods in my time and always thought they’d be unsellable/unloved, but seeing someone buy and appreciate the love someone put into a rig is just so cool. I really hope the original owner stumbles on these videos some day.

      @@ActionRetro put some plastic wrap on the upper left corner of the back case, then put it on the Mac. Then you can build up the damaged corner of the front with Bondo Glass or other body filler that has glass fiber in it. Or you could try using glass fiber and ABS cement to layer it up enough to support finishing it with filler. Would be easier than cutting up another front to fit the drives, and since it's going to be black anyway it'd be a good time to sand down the whole case then prime and apply a nice new coat of black.

      And as it turns out, he did! In a newer video about this Mac, Action Retro mentions that he got an email from the original modder talking about not only his reaction to seeing a video about his Mac, but also the story of the Mac (alongside some included pictures of the Mac as it was being worked on). It's a small world we live in.

    I would love to see you give this a proper black paint job, and clear coat, so it won't chip, and peel. One thing that's always bugged me about the B/W era macs is how they don't use the entire CRT area out to the edges, and so you end up with a lot of wasted space.

      @@macman85602 I know, but it still just bugs me the way Apple handled CRT displays back then compared to everyone else with the old Macs, I think it was handled better on the Apple II, and Apple IIGS line, and speaking of the Apple IIGS(they should have gone with it over the Mac IMHO) I personally think it was a much better computer than the Mac line of the same time frame, and my school was lucky enough to have Apple IIIE, Apple IIc, Apple IIGS, and various Apple Mac models at the same time so I could compare them as a user side by side, and I had an Apple IIIE at home with a color display, alongside a Commodore C128, both had dual disk drives, and both shared an Epson printer.

    This mac was cool for these reasons. 1) It was painted black. 2) It had speakers hooked up inside it. 3) It had a blue cd-rom facade. 5) It had an internal Jazz drive. 6) It was for music production. So you could imagine the sick goa trance and trip hop it was cooking up in the mid 90's in some studio in a scruffy part of town.
    I don't like the sd card drive or the BMOW rom or the hack for OS 8.1. It runs too slow now and your background is not fitting for a working computer.
    You just need to fix the scsi drive, paint the cd-rom blue (I think they were trying to get it to fit with the Jazz drive's blue but failing a bit - oh and an orange highlight on the eject button would be best). Roll back to the OS it was running because it was running faster with it. Then trick it out with little speakers inside and cut grills for the sound to come out. Then maybe add a switch to disable them if needed as in the machine is connected to monitors or an external amp or headphones. Then install Cubase and ASIO drivers. Then find a black keyboard. Then get someone to compose something on it and play it from the internal speakers.
    That would be best.

    That time when the operating system used 8 MB of RAM instead of 4 GB.

    • @Ragnar8504
      @Ragnar8504 4 роки тому +1

      ... and people complained about how it ate all of their RAM because the previous versions had used 2 MB instead of 8.
      7 and 7.1 were fine with 4 MB installed RAM, 7.5 required at least 8, better 12 MB to work properly and 8 was useless without at least 32. In 1999 I got my used 7200 with 160 MB running 8.5 and quickly downgraded it to a dual-boot of 7.6.1 and 8.1, using 7.6 most of the time because it was so much faster, especially startup! Desktop pictures were real power hogs too. I had Kaleidoscope (essentially a shareware that did what Appearance control panel did on 8.5 and up) on my Performa 450 and replacing the background with a photo made it almost useless!

    • @HaveYouTriedGuillotines
      @HaveYouTriedGuillotines 4 роки тому

      @@Ragnar8504
      Everything was slow back then, honestly. I had a 7200 with 32 megs, I know all about that. The CPU was far more a bottleneck than anything else, I never found the RAM to be a real problem.
      Especially with Kaleidoscope. I know all about Kaleidoscope, it did a lot more than just what the appearance control panel did. It also chugged on anything less than a 603e. Even my 7200 had trouble running it, wasn't until I had a Performa 6400 that it was bearable.
      My statement was more in an absolute sense about how developers managed to do more with less RAM back then.

Teenage me, hold my metaphorical beer...I give you a 286/16 running Windows 3.11 For Workgroups...2 weeks later the group blew up. Fried the CPU. This started me down my path of Cyrix 6x86, AMD K2, Pentium 60Mhz etc. Ended up becoming a Network Engineer for 14 years. Completely self taught, never went to school for any of it. Graduated high school May 1995, had my 1st full time job as as a Computer Tech August 1995. Started out making $6 per hour ($12,480.00 per year). Had to stop working in 2009 due to naturally occurring spinal cord injury resulting in permanent disability at age 32 😭 (I'm not immobile, nor do I have any special needs. I just live in a literal state of constant, severe pain & neurological symptoms that never go away. I can't lift anything, can't sit for to long or I lose all feeling from the waist down, can't walk far without stopping, etc. Have to take 4 different types of medications, see a pain management Dr every 2 months...it sucks. Have you made any explanations for how you achieved this on yours or perhaps made a video about it?
    My plan is to create some small partitions all in journaled format (maybe APFS for High Sierra if possible) and then run terminal commands to make them bootable installers of the OS's I downloaded from Apple. Do you think I'll run into any issues or problems with this? Thanks for reading and thanks for your great videos.

    You need to find the hack to fit 640x480 on the integrated CRT & install a graphics-card to support 8-bit grayscale

    Mounting the entire SCSI/SD adapter to the back would be best I feel. Gives the the option for other adapters down the line, should you need it. Definitely I would stress a 3D printed bracket solution for the two optical drives. If you need help with that, let me know :)

    The only thing similar to this I've ever seen was a series of modded eMacs for running MorphOS. That black eMac is something I still adore.

    This is a series that does not dissapoint! Man this thing is odd (obviously in a good way!)
    Also, paint the drive blue like the original, and try and find a place for the SD card adapter (maybe cut a slit in the front, left of the jaz drive, similar to the old floppy drives that were in there originally) that would be really interesting!

    The previous "owner", used a DREMEL to cut the things against all safety regulations. I wouldn't touch that machine with my bare foot. And, that POOR power supply! BTW, take your ring off when working with electronics. Acts as a spark plug. One spark, and you could potentially be "plugged"..... Into the dirt.

    Not that it really matters now, but I'm guessing that the reason why those other CD drives wouldn't read before is because you were booting off of that ROM, which had System 7.1 on it. IME versions of System Software prior to OS 7.6 don't like to play nice with non-Apple CD drives without an extension. I ran into this when I bought an external LaCie CD drive for my IIci, which was running 7.5. Wouldn't read anything and I thought it was busted. All I had to do was take the CD-ROM extension from OS 7.6 and replace the 7.5 CD extension with it, and lo and behold it worked perfectly.

    Turn it into the 90s home studio with a handle it clearly was meant to be.
    Replace the speaker wires out with a 1/8th or XLR, give it MIDI In/Thru/Out, recap it and make sure it gets nice clean power, give it a balanced line in... You'd then have something that knocks the socks off of Amiga machines meant for music production what with their MIDI ports coming standard!
    Hell, you'd be going into professional studio territory with all the stuff I was talking about... And with that said, I'm sure somebody who is still using Ensoniq or EMU samplers would kill to have this rig!

    Great video series! FWIW, though, I would put a Gotek floppy emulator where the Jaz drive is. There also isn't any real way to quiet the CD drive given your space constraints, and there is unfortunately no optical drive emulator solution I know of. I have taken to using a second SD (or CF) adapter and partitioning it to CD sizes. It clutters your desktop and you have to think ahead because you have to reboot to swap cards, but it's silent and fast.

  • @rhysholdaway

    Definitely cool. Can't help but think would be better ditching the jazz drive and just having the SD card or alternatively getting a GOTEC reader. All black for drives.

    A quick tip, if you work on those compact macs, its always a good idea to unplug the little pcb from the neck of the crt, when i was young, i had the exact same machine, and i also love to tinker, and when i was unplugging stuff, i accidentally hit that little pcb, resulting in a dead crt, it isn't dangerous at all and it gives you a little bit more space and your chances in damaging the crt neck dramatically lowers. Great video btw man! Love this series! 16:00 You have a usb OTG extension cable for tablets, its a male micro usb on one end, but a female input instead of the mail usb type a plug, they do exist because i have one of those :p maby you can use that? Than you can plug your Mac SE/30 in your laptop with a mobile phone wire

People only want to hear your voice, so please adjust your microphone so that we can't hear your breathing and all the other unnessesary noises from your mouth. It sounds much like my cat when he's licking his fur.

    You need a slot loading CD ROM for this Mac. Macs automatically eject unreadable disks and this includes when no disk is inserted. It'll always eject the tray unless a CD that it can read is kept in the drive.

    It's nice but not essential just convenient but I wouldn't worry about how much noise it is making too much.
