The five-time All-Star is eligible to sign a five-year, $269.9 million max extension when he becomes a free agent after the 2024-25 season. Right or Wrong I don't want to pay DM that kind of money right now. Let's see if he can stay healthy next season. With Bickerstaff being fired in Cleveland, DM might want out anyway. Rather run it back again with upgrades on the edges and see what we really got. Prove the 19win improvement isnt a fluke. Theres absolutely no reason to rush any major roster move. We are right on track. Remember those old contending teams will start spiral way down - Lakers, Clippers, Suns & Warriors. Denver & Wolves gonna be too expensive to keep together. Remember, when they traded for him, they were in the same position we are or maybe even better. On the rise, Garland was an all star, Mobley had lots of 2way upside, Markkanen was playing great etc. Did they really improved after the trade? Did Garland & Mobley developed along side him?
In theory, he will be good beside Sengun on offense you say. How about the other pieces? Is he really worth breaking up the core after one season which we improved? Knowing theres so much more potential to this roster. Dont think hes that level good to break up the core after one yr improvement and build around him. A hard pass..
I will rather bet on what the roster can do under Udoka yr2. With upgrades on the edges of the roster. Remember, Adams & Tari will be huge. That 3rd pick could be huge. Mitchell aint it..

Patience.....a wise man pauses where fools rush in. Mitchell is an upgrade over Jalen right now, but not enough of an upgrade to warrent giving up more than the #3 this year, Jalen and salary fillers IMO. Mitchell is good, but he only played 55 games this year while Jalen played 82. that counts for something IMO. I don't care how good you are if you hardly ever play. this is a trend with Mitchell. don't forget he missed the last 2 playoff games his team played due to injury. Jalen at this point is a more durable player who is still rising. wouldn't it be premature to abandon the plan right before the payoff. I say forget Mitchell, stay the course. I still believe Brooklyn will be bad at least another year or 2. Stone has proven his drafting ability to me. for now continue to build and develope and wait for something better than Mitchell to shake loose. if Jalen blossoms this coming season under Ime's guidance this may turn out to be the best trade we never made. a bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush

@RobertLandHoustonSportsTalk We may view chasm between SGA and Donovan differently. Mitchell is a phenomenal player and would be an ideal 2nd option on a championship squad. My view is that the organization isn't far from true contention from purely a time perspective, yet rather an efficacy one. A true #1 option is the hardest thing to acquire in the league but once you have one, they can lead a young squad to a deep run. Unless the thinking is that having Mitchell on the roster makes Houston a desirable destination for those kinds of players down the road, that's a valid point. However on his own, I don't belive Mitchell moves the needle enough. Would rather keep the powder dry, as it were, should one become available this season. There is no urgency as of yet, no need to manufacture it. It's easily possible that through internal growth and increased familiarity with Udoka, we win 50 games without sacrificing valuable assets. Would rather wait to see what shakes loose by the deadline

@RobertLandHoustonSportsTalk I would contend that the only players we currently have whose ceiling has presented as a top 5 talent, however unlikely it is they attain it at any point; are Sengun, Green and Whitmore. In a vacuum, there is no debate that Donovan would immediately become the best player on this team, and it is extremely unlikely any of our core develops into substantially better players than he is currently. I fully agree with that sentiment and understand the logic of acquiring an asset like that when/if they become available. However, given the volatility of player demands and tracking current trends, it isn't outside the realm of possibility that players like Giannis, Booker, or even Tatum become available by the next deadline. I don't believe the rockets would be able to offer the greatest collection of assets yet still represent a fairly desirable situation with the coach and city involved, should the player make a specific demand. However, should we go in on a Donovan level player and sacrifice the assets required, it would preclude our ability to field an even respectable offer for a significant talent. This is all ignoring the possibility that the natural mental and physical maturation processes our current talent is undergoing yields substantive returns in the immediate. If we'd had 4 years under Udoka, the data we've received would be far more useful. As it stands, the way this team closed the season warrants a further look. My reasoning is that unless an upper echelon talent, like the aforementioned 3, is being acquired- this off-season is not our consolidation period in regards to "core 6." Presti did make a mistake but only because he waited until the deadline, his team had legitimate capability to contend but addressable holes and then did nothing. Time is our ally, which is incredibly valuable. The organizational perogitive is currently a playoff appearance. I feel we should see how the team looks the first few months of season before considering drastic measures.
