thank you SO MUCH for this....i was in the band, 'the the', which opened for nico, john and lars at those shows...she was beyond category, one of the most distinctive artists ever....i'd sit there stunned, trying to take in and somehow save all i was hearing when she performed.
The The were an amazing band! You must have had a great time playing shows with them. Interesting that you would have opened for her, but I guess it was New York and she would have been very well known in NYC. I too am very interested in all of her work, yet never had a chance to see her perform live in person. A real regret but I do not recall ever even knowing if she performed in the Toronto area at all.

I was a big Eno and Cale fan and got to know her music by her association with them first. My love of the Velvets oddly came after by researching and tracing back each of their origins to find they were in the same band! It blew my mind eventually. Did you enjoy playing in Toronto?

I'm glad you've found this version moving. I think it's an incredibly beautiful and unique version. The only regret is that the fidelity wasn't higher. Cale's viola playing is stunning.
Yes...it really is a beautiful rendition. It's a shame that a soundboard recording wasn't made of this historic gig, but superb nonetheless. Cale's viola playing adds so much and only heard here.
Hi tractorhead971, I've got a number of very extensive Nico gig listings of bootlegs etc. and I've not seen this one on any of them, so I'd definitely put it up there. Is it by any chance a soundboard recording? Or just an audience cassette recording? Does it have an exact date and venue? This would be helpful in figuring out who was playing with her, but this is probably her best band of members of The Fall.
Hi yes it’s an audience job, the cassette recorder hidden in my Adidas bag allegedly 😎 grim sound quality but it was a moment in time that cannot be repeated. The venue was a small place on the left of Grand Parade as you head down to the seafront. The Fall played there too, always something going on 1981 or 82 I reckon, to be confirmed if I find an old diary. She wore a sheepskin jacket. Playing with her was the band of local hero Mark Smith with his coat of birdshit shoulders not to be confused with Mark E Smith. The poster had ‘Velvet Underground’ in big letters and there was a fair bit of disquiet and heckling from people expecting Lou Reed to step onto stage, especially during her slow ponderous solo work at the start, ‘Janitor of Lunacy’ etc. They cheered up when the drummer etc kicked in to do the more energetic material later. Between tracks she says something like “this next one is another Lou Reed song… They’re all Lou Reed songs”. A man near me shouts “They’re better than your fucking songs ain’t they”. She didn’t respond. Ah heady days
@@tractorhead971 I'm confused about the band you describe. There are TWO Mark Smith's? That's very strange considering she did in fact play with member of The Fall in her band for a while in 1981. I see no record of this gig anywhere in Brighton until about 1985 at a place called The Zap Club. Can you pinpoint the date and the venue?
I’ve described the venue as best I can, small place just the width of a shop but deep. There was a much bigger venue nearby ‘Pink Flamingo’ or some such that put on more mainstream shit like Haircut100, definitely not that place. Definitely not 1985 either, I left Brighton by 1983. Definitely two Mark Smiths but only ever one Mark E Smith eh. Brighton had its own Mark Smith wannabe pop star who always wore his trademark black donkey jacket with shoulders decorated to look like lots of birdshit. Memorable. He opened the show with a band I assumed was his, then it was Nico on harmonium, then the same band with Nico for the livelier tracks. Maybe he borrowed her band? She arrived alone through the same front door the audience used. I interacted with her as she entered actually. I only realised it was Nico when the same woman appeared on stage later, I’d only ever seen the Chelsea Girls LP cover and she looked nothing like that. Doh
