No, DO ask about After the Rain. It's one of those "The outline is lying" anime. They list it as a romance (between a 17yo girl and a 40yo man) but what it actually is is a Coming of Age story about two people learning to live again. The girl does have a crush on the older man but in that way that teen girls do. The man understands this and doesn't belittle her feelings but also draws a very firm line between them that he never crosses. It's a serious, thoughtful drama with BEAUTIFUL animation and it's slept on because people think it's a pedo romance.
@@mothersbasement please do! As @koiPuff mentions, the story goes way beyond what the synopsis says. ATR earned a place within my favorite animes mainly because of how it handles the characters (specially Kondo, who if you ask me, is the really MC of the anime).
"OLM, or Oriental Light & Magic, which has been around since you could name a company that" It KILLS me that great jokes like this sail by with so little recognition
"The sophisticated eight year old's monster battling franchise of choice." - Pikachu will remember this. - Jibanyan will remember this. - Gammamon was busy eating adorably and will not remember the compliment.
Can I just say that "This show is basically Made-in-Abyss meets a Goofy Movie by way of Gurren Lagaan" is possibly the best descriptor to get someone to watch a show I have ever heard?
For those unfamiliar with Heike Monogatari, the original story is basically to Japan what the Iliad and the Odyssey are to Greece. That's its level of cultural importance.
Takt Op. Destiny and 86 s2 have my attention completely. This season is so stacked, Geoff thank you for watching everything for us so we don't have too!
Takt I hope just lands proper without flopping, as a musician, many overrated pieces and takt's personality is somewhat extreme, like many composers in the past. This may be an introduction, but its a success for me if lesser known pieces appear in the anime. Given there is more characters to come though, who knows what will happen.
@@electrotricity7203 nah, takt has big potential to either be a hit or a flop. They say musicart fight with the power of the music but how? I hope they don't botch up explaining that and don't go down the path of love and friendship is power!
Literally these videos are at the caliber of college lectures on anime. Not only do I get great recommendations, I come away from these videos feeling like I've gained knowledge and insight about a subject I care about.
Cool point of reference for Heike Monogatari: in real life, long after the fall of the Taira clan, an epic poem dramatizing the conflict was popularized by blind lute players called biwa hōshi. They're the inspiration for Biwa, the anime's fictional POV character who already knows what will happen.
@@Charlie-hv3dh Linfamy did a nice hour-long video series (Genpei War parts 1~6) or if you're really into it there are full English translations of the original Heike Monogatari. I'm not super into war history so someone more knowledgeable could have better recommendations.
Guys please, please do not sleep on Ousama Ranking. It will be amazingly good. Its visual direction and animation are crazy, backgrounds and designs are beautiful, the classical OSTs are amazing, sound direction is impeccable. Adding this technical excellence to classic adventure/fantasy shounen tropes and strongly constructed characters turn this show into a must check, especially for the fans of these genres.
Blue Period is one of my favorite manga of all time, but I'm going to have to disagree somewhat that it makes art seem "accessible and fun". One of the core conflicts in the story is that art is often times NOT fun. Despite it being the passion and raison d'etre for many of the characters in the story, art is also the source of a lot of pain and suffering for them. A lot of characters find a passion in art, but they don't get their happy ending. Producing art and letting the world see it leaves you vulnerable, and being vulnerable means you are easier to hurt. Yaguchi's pursuit of art brings him genuine happiness, but it also marks the first time he's ever felt so deeply inferior and worthless. He is constantly being crushed by his own insecurities and fear that he will never be as skilled as his peers. That's what makes the story so powerful and engaging to me. It's not a strictly 'feel-good' type of story, but it does realistically depict what it's like to throw everything you have into something. It captures why it is that people are driven to create in spite of the hardships it brings, because it means everything to them.
"..letting the world see it leaves you vulnerable, and being vulnerable means you are easier to hurt." You can always hurt the audience first by choosing themes that do that: tragic, violent and depressing stuff. Rub salt in the wound by making it extra nihilistic and meaningless. Then deflect all criticism by implying those people don't get the true depth of it. I am only joking a little bit. Seriously though - the worst thing for an artist is not criticism but indifference. Getting no reaction back feels the worst. If people criticise your work, than at least they pay some attention to it. Being in an social media echo chamber or surrounded by yes-men and getting fake praise or incompetent comments is also really bad - you lose the grip on reality. The easiest way to get lots of attention is making something "stupid horny". The second best way is to trigger people and piss them off royally by being controversial and in their face, this draws lots of attention but also ire and maybe a full-blown twitter backlash (best marketing though!). Learn from the big corporations - sex sells and outrage marketing works!
Yeah, I agree with this. I personally find it extremely unappealing to watch because I actually went to art school. I know how the story ends irl, and being back in that idealized art discussion isn't nice for me. I think it's great for people who haven't already lived it, though, lmao. The fact that I don't like it for that reason is a sign that it's pretty good.
@@komyn27 That's me with Hibike Euphonium. I couldn't relate to them having the perfect amount of players in the idealized marching band, and all they're arguing about it who is superior.
Oh absolutely right on the mark. I read the manga way before the anime was even announced. And I had to stop reading because it hit way too close to home lmao. I started getting anxiety and terrible flashbacks while I was reading it. It is not an enjoyable read for anyone who went to art school or is a struggling artist. Art making can be so ugly. Facing yourself, your shortcomings, your hidden jealousy, your insecurities, while being surrounded by brilliant peers (who still very much has the same worries as you) is very painful. I'm better now, I'm older and I work as a professional artist somewhat. The pain gets dulled overtime, but I'm still avoiding this anime lmao. Probably enjoyable for anyone who can't relate though, who can detach themselves from the story.
As a fellow musician, that's good to know. Thanks. (Nothing ruins a good anime experience faster than fingers randomly hitting keys to a well known piano piece.)
@@Archerdan411 Or hearing characters quote composers for no specific reason. Or seeing their weird reactions whenever the characters play music. Like do I need to know that the character is not putting their heart into it? oh well, sry for my ramblings.
Oh my fucking god am I gonna pass out. Ousama Ranking is easily the best anime I've ever seen this year if not of all time. Hopefully not gonna be overshadowed by the big guns this season, that's just gonna be sad
And Takt Op. Destiny is going to be this season's Vivy Fluorite's Eye's Song. It'll get overlooked as it looks like another music genre anime with an idol but turns out to be one of the best animes of this year. Hopefully the story and characters of Takt are gonna be up to par with Vivy because just visually and by the animation, it looks gorgeous.
@@Lazer-bp9lf isn't it the 3rd most popular anime this season behind komi san and mushoku Tensei. It has 230000+ members but ousama ranking only has 45000+ members takt op is definitely getting looked up on
Everyone, please, if you find even the barest shrivel of interest in the Blue Period anime, just read the manga. I don’t think that the anime is bad on its own, but the manga is one of the most meaningful pieces I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading, and that’s including *actual philosophy*. I don’t want people to miss out on that in favor of an above-average anime.
I don't know, I say still go for the anime. I mean regardless of how an anime looks, they could still deliver with using the music, voice acting and other elements an anime can offer. Like look at To your Eternity, its not really packing the S tier quality in animation compared with the manga but still delivers the moments on par and and most of the times better than the manga does by using the right kind of music, directing and voice acting. If you like want to dive deeper, then also go for the manga.
@@Snzn_7 I kinda agree with that. I haven't read much manga but with series like attack on titan I never really felt to get the same experience than with anime. To me the music seems to be really important to get a deep feeling.
Geoff I can distinctly hear every cut word from this script. Please never have another negative thought about your productions in your life, you've Made It. I've got 4 shows to watch and I'm sure they won't be wasted exploration. Nobody else gives you that. What a complete dominance of your chosen niche.
One of the best anime that made the most impression on me. After watching it (when it came out), I still think about it everyday. Someone who's also dropped out of the sports world because of an injury that needed surgery, I can resonate soo much with the female main character on soo many levels. Definitely an anime I definitely didn't expect to resonate with me on a whole different level
I’m just happy that “My Senpai is Annoying” is finally getting an anime adaption. I read it last year when it was obscure and it’s the most wholesome thing I’ve read
Can we just talk about the absolute banger that the "My senpai is annoying" OP is? I can't get enough of cute Futaba dancing and marching towards the camera, and also the fan dance with Takeda. Damn the animation is smooth and enjoyable!
I as well have seen it. Komi only gets more adorable, Tadano proves why he is known as Chadano (sadly we must wait for season 2 I hear for why he surpasses some girls as best girl, Trapdano), you very likely will despise a yandere, and no you will never get a straight answer about Najimi's gender. The heartwarming show about overcoming one's anxiety and making friends has only just begun. The anime is covering about 50 chapters I hear, mind you we are over 300 chapters in the manga. And good news it only gets better from the start (we may see other best girl by late season 2 or more likely season 3, yes she is that big a deal to mandate 2 best girls from 1 source)
@@thomasallen9974 Awwww, so adorable and appreciative of you to write all that for me, you really put ur heart into it, you're great with words, and idc about najimi's gender, in the anime he said he's a boy, anyways they're a nice character so I like that, I adore tadano so much, we've been seeing such trash mcs since a few years that he's just so refreshing even if he has a generic personality, komi is so pretty and I love how she tries, also, the chapters are very short I think? So with 50 chapters of it I think we'll just get a 12 episode adaption, I would really love a 24 episode one but that's prolly not gonna happen, the cinematography is so amazing that I'll have to wait for second season 😭😭😭
Ranking Of Kings is my top anime of this season so far. I am extremely pleased to have found another hidden gem like Odd Taxi was, and glad you gave it the shoutout is deserves
It's going to be so underrated sadly. It doesn't even make the top ten of most watched anime on MAL right now. I mean, come on. Wit Studio? Studio Ghibli influences? The first episode is just adorable. Bojji and Kage already won us all over.
So, basically, The Faraway Paladin is a show where the Santa Boss from SAO, one of Lady Dimitrescu's daughters, and swole Barry the Chopper raise Raphael Walt from Villainess. _Adds to watchlist_
I read the entire light novel. Told my friend that this has to be an anime. I am worried that it will be hard to convert. But I have high hopes. It is so damn good.
Yeppp. For any Komi fan who's hesitant about watching it let me sell the anime to you in a single sentence. They absolutely nail, and perhaps improve upon, the chalkboard scene. Yes it is that good. Just... don't watch the Netflix version because Netflix are lazy and cheap shits and didn't translate anything but peoples conversations in an anime where a girl exclusively communicates via writing and most of the jokes are based on the narrator boxes that pop up. Watch the absolutely fantastic NovaWorks fansubbed version where they do translate and typeset it instead.
When Tact op started playing Ragtime I was like "OMG ARE WE GOING THERE?!" if we get a villain who plays post tonal music I might have a music nerd heart attack.
wanted to express my gratitude for thoughtfully putting together the cream of the crop as always, my abject admiration for all this gorgeous animation, and also how nice it feels to hear things other than "professional shitbag" at the end of some of these newer videos. absolutely your prerogative and none of my business, I just know casual negative self-talk can be a bastard to shake, so. salutes.
*Parasocial affection deepens.* 'Scuse me while I go watch your respective videos back-to-back to encourage the algorithm to cross-pollinate these two audiences.
Professional shit bag is funny, why take things soooo freaking serious my dude!?! Relax, it’s going to be ok,I promise. Go watch some anime, k? You’ll feel better 😽
@@billyblack2192 it was deffo presumptuous of me to imply it's that serious! I just took a gamble on it because I personally like being recognized for that kind of progress. and he did heart the comment, so I can at least assume I haven't made an ass of myself there. I'm really not up in arms about all self-deprecating humor being bad, I just know my own mental health has improved since I took my therapist's advice and stopped (jokingly) calling myself a dipshit like ten times a day. among other things, anyway. so I know sometimes it isn't that deep, and sometimes it is! hell, sometimes anime is that deep, right? though I don't think I'd pick A Silent Voice to make me "feel better" lol
Heike is AMAZING, and Ranking of Kings has one of the best 1st episodes I've seen in a while. I've never been on board so hard after getting introduced to Bojji, I need to see him succeed. Takt is also fantastic, what a stacked season.
@@technovelo The tiny umbrellas are also a welcome touch. Do kids even grow up seeing that stuff these days? The best Warner Bros animation was a generation before even my time, and I'm in my fifties. I'm sure you can stream the old toons, but do people bother to actually do so?
I haven't watched seasonal anime since spring 2019, and your pitch of Heike Monogatari might be just the thing to get me back in. The cincher was the promise of Kensuke Ushio's score. I am absolutely obsessed with the Ping Pong and Devilman Crybaby OSTs.
I’m overwhelmed with feelings this fall. All these animes look so gorgeous and amazing! This makes me want to get back into anime after being gone for so long
And adapted so fuckin well. I'm still kind of in awe about its sound design and how brilliantly it utilizes subtle background noise, character sounds, and not-so-subtle sound effects and music to fill what would otherwise be dead air while the characters write, stand (usually scared) stiff, or the camera hangs to let you read text.
Ranking of Kings instantly won my heart, like that's my boy. MY PRECIOUS SON!!! And the fact that King Gnu sings the OP with the aptly named banger "SON" makes it my contender for anime of the year.
Okay I really appreciate your Ones To Watch lists every season, but ngl my first thought was "heck yeah, we're one video closer to part 2 of the cult anime"
The Vampire Dies in No Time became one of my all-time favorite anime almost as soon as I started watching it! Not only for the fact that, as you said, it's hilarious, but because finally, FINALLY, an anime where someone can walk in on you watching it at any point, you may have to explain some things, but age won't be one of them BECAUSE EVERYONE WHO GETS FAN-SERVICED ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE AN ADULT, THE HORNY GODS BE PRAISED!!! TTuTT
Its your resident light novel reader here, just stopping by to say FARAWAY PALADIN, WATCH IT NOW!!!! Literally the best light novel I have read, all the good points that Jobless has without the downside of pervyness, but comparing the two just feels bad. Dont think "another isekai" think great fantasy, think lord of the rings, we even get a dragon in the final book
I've discovered the scans a year or two ago and this has to be the best thing the isekai trope has brought up to life even though as you said it could have been a straight fantasy but in this case the isekai part was well executed giving the MC personality and growth, tired of the OP character never challenged by the world arround him and gets loyal follower or fuckdoll just by existing. Paladin's MC is strong but not almighty, he has to go through hardship without going edgy teenager murder hobo. I really love this story because of the values they promote and how coherent it is. Paladin and Sousou No Frieren have been stories I'm looking forward to.
I’ve been following the scans of Faraway Paladin and just picked up the first omnibus to reread. Usually not a LN reader but this world is amazing, maybe I should give it a try. The anime isn’t blowing me away so far, but I always have the manga to fall back to when I want to enjoy the story :)
i just watched the first two eps, and i probably wont go ahead and read the light novel due to lack of time yet, but the relationships warmed my heart, i genuinely really like the protagonist & his personality, and im super intrigued to see where the story will go!!! def excited for more of it:)
MB: Komi is done by the Pokemon guys Me: Oh yeah, well that anime looks good MB: They Did Odd Taxi Me: No way, well i'll probably check it... MB: THEY DID OG BERSERK Me: PLUG IT TO MY VEIIINNNSSSS!!!
I knew it the moment I looked up who made Odd Taxi and Pokemon: Twilight Wings. Those are mastefully done. Oddtaxi being a very good Thriller Mystery and Twilight Wings giving way more depth and sympathy to charcters that are portrayed flat as a cardboard (my favorite being Ariana's vent in the taxi).
As a long time Digimon fan, Ghost Game is an absolute blessing. It brings the modern animation beauty to a genre that we haven't seen since Tamers. So far it has an amazing direction and the characters are a joy to watch. Even if you aren't a hard core digimon fan it's a good time for anyone with a vague interest in the monster of the week shows.
You've convinced me to watch The Vampire Dies In No Time. I still can't convince myself to try Takt Op., though, after trying to slog through Listeners. My favorites so far this season are actually two of your honorable mentions (World's Finest Assassin & Banished), followed by Komi-san, My Senpai is Annoying and Faraway Paladin. I'm still on the fence about Vampire Cosmonaut but I'm still watching and hoping it will head in a happier direction. I won't apologize for not being able to take any more dark, tragic anime right now, given the state of the world. Follow-up: I didn't end up liking Vampire Dies because its humor is a little too goofy for my tastes. But you also convinced me to try Ranking of Kings and BOY WERE MY INSTINCTS WRONG ABOUT THAT ONE!!! What a great, heart-rending anime! It deals with disability with such care and directness that the animation style (my primary hesitation) really takes a back seat to the story. Great pick!
I would call the majority of the anime titles this fall season to be the most suprising and unique for this year. A lot of them that you have mentioned in this video took me by surprise with their authenticity like Ranking of Kings, Heike Monogatari and Sakugan. I appreciate you making this video in showcasing how amazing the lesser known or hyped shows truly are.
That chalkboard scene hit me on a spiritual level.... As someone who had an even worse level of social anxiety as a kid.... I broke down and cried for 15 minutes.... And finally after I could pull myself together did something I have NEVER done before.... I gave Komi a 10/10 less than halfwa6 through the first episode.
How was the chalkboard scene in with English subs? My main concern with the series is that since Komi communicates mostly with text, it would be hard to localize. I started the series for similar reasons. There are points where I can barely get a word out, even to ask a simple question. I was thinking it would be similar to A Silent Voice, but was a bit disappointed in that regard.
@@jardex2275 With the sub I used it was not too bad.... Although, I do admit that I re-watched that scene and paused the video in order to read every single thing... Since it was quite a lot of text, it went a little too fast to catch everything
Platinum End is actually pretty good so far though? Taisho Otome Fairytale is definitely my favorite non-returning show (shout out 86) so far. So beautiful and heartwarming. A warm hug to end the week. It's like if Tonikaku and Fruits Basket had a baby.
Is Platinum End pretty good though? I've watched the first two episodes. It's some dumb fun and has some nice visuals, but I'm really not sold on some of the plot points. SPOILERS: Like, the whole premise of the show is the MC's cartoonishly wholesome family was clearly murdered (car bombs don't just happen randomly), yeah? Unless we're supposed to just assume that his super wholesome parents had tons of enemies, the people set to inherit their money-the cartoonishly awful and clearly scummy aunt and uncle-would have been suspects in the triple-murder investigation. Maybe Japan's legal system is more screwed up than I imagine, but the premise relies on the people who would be murder suspects adopting the orphan of said murder, and then no one ever checking up on that orphan again as the family abuses him for years and pushes him to suicide. To me, this seems like the writers were thinking, "We need to get MC to point A for the show to start, but I'm not sure how. I guess we'll just make something up and hope no one thinks too hard about it." More information may be revealed later that adds new context the theses events, but right now, it looks a lot like lazy writing.
@@JadenAlexis No, I'm saying that the police who would have investigated the triple murder via car bomb in a suburb should have been suspicious of the clearly scummy people who would benefit from their deaths. And that murder suspects shouldn't be casually adopting the orphans created by the murders they're suspected of.
I’m gonna be honest, I watched Digimon Ghost Game, which not only has a banging opening, but the brotherly relationship between Hiro and Gammamon is very well done, and Mummymon was actually a very compelling villain in episode 2.
Glad to see Takt Op. Destiny getting the love it deserves. People were bitching a lot about it but personally i feel that it is the best original anime this season. The way music was incorporated into scenes gave me goosebumps. We'll have to see how this goes as the season progresses but for now, I'm really hyped for it
Unfortunately these days I've found myself watching significantly less anime than usual, but I got caught up with the Komi manga in early to mid-2020 and it's easily one of the most wholesome, heartwarming, and generally fun stories I've experienced in a long time. And Gurren Lagann and Made in Abyss are some of my all-time favorites so you've definitely convinced me to give Sakugan a shot. And Takt Op Destiny sounds fun. But I somehow still haven't finished To Your Eternity or the latest season of MHA, and I promised myself I would finally watch Evangelion this year and I'm only 3 episodes into that, and I just started reading Berserk and the manga of A Silent Voice (and The Stormlight Archive, but that's not really anime/manga related) and oh my goodness what has my life become?
So far sakugan was really mediocre (aside from a single scene near the end of episode one), I don't really see a point for it being on the list. Takt Op Destiny, on other hand, is really good.
Just one show you missed - Taisho Otome Fairy Tale. Very cute and wholesome romcom set in the Taisho era following a guy who's been an outcast by his rich and powerful family for being a failure and a girl who's been sold off to be his wife to pay off her family's debt. Definitely recommend it.
@@marcgoodman4862 I watched the first episode on a whim with zero expectations, and now I'm already at 2/3 of the manga. Definitely read the manga if you liked the anime, there's a lot of detail lost in the adaptation. The character and relationship development as the months and years passes are great, and the author does a very good job at painting the Taisho era society (even with historical events). And yes, Yuzu is even better girl in the manga! The art is adorably cute
Heike is definitely fantastic; the art style alone has hooked me. I've been planning to start Faraway Paladin, but will likely add Ranking of Kings and Takt Op. Also, thanks for the end card title list; it's great.
Really hoping that once Komi-san gets out of Netflix Jail, you might consider do an scene analysis of the chalkboard scene you alluded already to. Cause it's a sequence of pure beauty in terms of animation. Also, just a random idea if you do more on the Komisan anime in the future. Komi-san Friend Rap a la Pokerap.
And a great example why the adaptation is in good hands, I went back to the volume that it was adapted from, and in a lot of other animation studios would do it the lazy way. Spoilers -Maybe The Manga scene is just one panel, after some exposition, but! they animate it to show the flow of them communicating, as each start at one end of the black board, the music crescendos as the finally meet in the middle, the ending shot seems like a haphazard mess, but to those in the know its a flow of little conversational moments understood fully to the two of them alone. Spoilers -Maybe
I read the faraway paladin manga and i can tell you if they go up to chapter 28 i can promise you it will go into your top 10 anime. I know its one of my favorite manga. Just hope they do finish the anime at chapter 28
I have been jebaited. Talkin' about sequels and showing Katanagatari, you're a monster. Take Oekaki has such incredible characters, they deserve so many anime to design characters for.
blue period honestly made me tear up in the first two episodes-- the mc pointing out how much his mother does for him and how he never would've noticed it if he wasn't trying to draw her got me :' being an artist means you're paying attention to things around you and you'll start noticing so many more things and it'll make you more vulnerable as well,, think i just love it because it feels personal so i might pick up the manga whenever i feel like it ᕙ(⇀‸↼‶)ᕗ
Jobless reincarnation is simply my favorite, it’s a manga I’ve been following for a while and seeing it on screen with such passion and dedication is fascinating.
The pervasive horniness and its fanbase being obnoxious to anyone turned off from treating most of that as a joke really keep me from liking it more. Shame because the world on display is fairly interesting and the production is great
Woah woah woah hold on a minute. You’re reading the manga? Don’t want ti be that guy but bad move, the manga cuts out more information, worldbuilding, character moments and general plot than the anime (but it makes up for it in the art). If you want to read Mushoku Tensei, then read the Light Novel, even if you’re not one for books, just read the LN, trust me
19:37 Too many people hate the more simple and stylistic art style from Sun and Moon and Journeys even though the anime has been maintaining a high level of animation and character writing quality since X & Y, it's a shame really. Meanwhile the games languish in being stuck in the past. It's like Digimon and Pokemon swapped places the moment Nintendo and Sony did. Digimon Ghost Game looks promising at least, basically a slightly darker Yokai Watch Shadowside from the looks of it. Also isn't that the Zarude movie?
Man, komi can't communicate is possibly the most accurate portrayal of high school I've ever seen, and the main character days like less than 5 words an episode.
12:38: while Armadillos can be decent in a house, humans and armadillos can pass lepracy between each other, and a high presentage of cases in both north and south America are form people handling them, so I don't recommend owning one.
Reasonably certain even very bad vampires are immune to leprosy. If nothing else I'd think the guy regularly turning into dust and then reconstituting himself would make it hard for the bacteria to get settled into his body. Also I suddenly have this weird desire to see someone re-write those awful old Thomas Covenant novels so he contracted his leprosy from screwing an armadillo or something equally vile. It seems like the kind of thing he'd do.
This season was surprisingly strong when you consider how stacked the beginning of the year was. Heike Story is an absolute masterpiece and I am really drawn in by Blue Period, Sakugan, Komi, and Takt.Op Destiny. Even Faraway Paladin seems like a pleasant surprise for the Iseikai genre.
As much as I'd love to support the Blue Period recommendation, I just can't. It's adaptation is just too mediocre. All of what makes the story good is lost. They are speedrunning the story at a breakneck pace leaving out almost everything about the characters personal struggles, how they overcome them and their growth. Not only does that make the characters feel much more one dimentional but it also takes away from their depth as people. Also, they are just quickly brushing over Yatoras improvement as an artist which really made the manga a compelling story. They just show bits and pieces of his artistic improvement which doesn't nearly do him justice. It breaks my heart to see a series that I love so dearly being treated so poorly. But hey at least some people enjoy it and might even start reading it's beyond brilliant source material :)
@@Vaehlin I beg of you, just read like the first four chapters and you will immediately know what I mean. The anime is by no means terrible, it is just nowhere near the masterpiece that is the manga. I'm not trying to ruin the enjoyment of anime onlys but rather to save them from ruining the series for themselves thanks to a mediocre adaptation and maybe switch before it's too late. Hoping you get the most enjoyment out of the series reguardless tho
Thanks for the note! I'm a huge fan of the manga and was planning on watching the show--now I can brace myself for the disappointment. I can totally see how a story that has so many really subtle moments could get wrecked by screwing with the pacing...what a shame! I hope it doesn't turn too many people off
@@sbondiw7943 I hope so too! The subtlety of the manga is lost completely and everything art related practically left out. The pacing really isn't the only problem, the production quality and direction is too. The animations are mid at best and the anime just takes the best scenes from the manga, puts some color on it and somehow strings them together. The best part about it is the opening (fucking banger lmao)
Blue Period is probably one of my favourate manga and I quiet enjoyed paladin, so this season for manga adaptation is very strong. And this is not even mentioning Komi, and I have heard very good things about it; I have high hopes.
how you transition from point to point whether from advertising aa product to the actual content of the video is masterful t say the least, you have my respect
I was just talking to some friends about how good Saihate no Paladin would be as an anime movie last night so I'm unbelievably hyped to hear its being adapted
"Basically Made in Abyss meets Goofy Movie by way of Gurren Lagan" This is a pedigree and a half. "Hamster eating banana"................... You truly are a man of fine culture.
FINALLY HEIKE MONOGATARI IS GETTING THE ATTENTION IT DESERVES, it's such a beautiful anime and I really appreciated they incorporated the traditional way of telling The Tale of Heike (which is told orally through biwa, a Japanese string instrument) with the actual story, it gives this sense of modern and tradition coming together in the best way possible
So fun fact about My senpai is Annoying! You mention Wotakoi in your review of it, Well they are more connected than you think! Wotakoi has a picture of My Senpai is Annoying artwork in Episode 2, a full 2 years before the anime release.
Heike is an amazingly beautiful masterpiece. It’s definitely worth researching the source material to get the most out of the anime. And Biwa stole my heart!
I legit did not expect you to shout out Digimon Ghost Game but I'm so glad you did. I'm a longtime Digimon fans and I haven't been this excited about a new series in YEARS, and it's only been two episodes! I'm seeing a lot of people express the same sentiment, and so much love for Gammamon. I really hope they keep up with that strong momentum, I love seeing my favorite franchise succeeding.
Fr. Not even Taishou Otome Otogibanashi on the honourable mentions? That show is just sweet af. Kinda similar to Shinigami Bocchan to kuro maid Also. Good idea with the list at the end, nothing particularly piqued my interest this season but it will definitely make it easier to come back to this video, as your Ones to watch is basically always my anime to-do list for the next 3 months
Nobody gives a single fuck, but Yuki Yuna is a hero season 3 is my favorite anime of the season so far. It's been so long and I'm excited to see what happens!
@@mothersbasement It was like the 20th most popular anime when season 1 aired in fall 2014 lmao. If I'm not wrong you mentioned it by name a single time in a video. I think saying the writer of another show you were recommending also worked on Yuki Yuna. Either way it's a great series and I do recommend it
I remember running across the series on TVTropes under "Magical Girl Subversions" but haven't watched it, mostly because the only place I could find it hosted appeared to have god awful subtitles according to the customer reviews. But the OST I heard in clips sounds awesome, and I can't help but admire a magical girl with the power of PAWNCH.
After watching mother's basement analysis of Mushoku Tensei it made me want to read the light novel and I swear that I have never read an isekai as beautiful and as touching as Mushoku Tensei so, Thank you Jeff for your amazing videos.
one of the things i love abt the blue period manga is that a lot of the student's art is done by actual art students that contributed their pieces to give each character their own unique style. that's such a cool thing that i haven't really seen done before
No, DO ask about After the Rain.
I guess I should finish it! Sorry to have judged it too soon.
@@mothersbasement please do! As @koiPuff mentions, the story goes way beyond what the synopsis says. ATR earned a place within my favorite animes mainly because of how it handles the characters (specially Kondo, who if you ask me, is the really MC of the anime).

Add mushuko tensei and Demon Slayer and then you got my instant watch when released
The 86 anime has so far surpassed the original light novels its based on that it just leaves me speechless
Is it stacked tho?
Literally these videos are at the caliber of college lectures on anime. Not only do I get great recommendations, I come away from these videos feeling like I've gained knowledge and insight about a subject I care about.
Cool point of reference for Heike Monogatari: in real life, long after the fall of the Taira clan, an epic poem dramatizing the conflict was popularized by blind lute players called biwa hōshi. They're the inspiration for Biwa, the anime's fictional POV character who already knows what will happen.
That's honestly an amazing addition
Do you know anywhere that I can really learn about this stuff prior to watchign the anime to understand whats going on?

Guys please, please do not sleep on Ousama Ranking. It will be amazingly good. Its visual direction and animation are crazy, backgrounds and designs are beautiful, the classical OSTs are amazing, sound direction is impeccable. Adding this technical excellence to classic adventure/fantasy shounen tropes and strongly constructed characters turn this show into a must check, especially for the fans of these genres.
Its definitely worth watching I don't understand why people think animation is bad it's great
Episode 9 released a few days ago, it’s my favorite episode yet. For me this will go down as one of my favorite anime of all time.
This anime is just a real masterpiece. We have a tons of great anime in this year, and still, this one is more special than anybody think!
Yes. You have exactly captured my thoughts.
Blue Period is meant to showcase both the good and bad sides of art.
"..letting the world see it leaves you vulnerable, and being vulnerable means you are easier to hurt."
You can always hurt the audience first by choosing themes that do that: tragic, violent and depressing stuff.
As a musician, Takt op. is very accurate with piano fingerings.

I'm thinking of doing this. Because it's art related, I thought it would be kind of nice to watch in its original art medium.
I agree the manga is amazing. Honestly think the anime isn't doing it justice at all so I highly recommend the manga!
Do what you prefer watch or read doesn't matter I think If the story is the same it just comes down to preference but yea please give blue period a go
I don't know, I say still go for the anime.

As a long time Digimon fan, Ghost Game is an absolute blessing. It brings the modern animation beauty to a genre that we haven't seen since Tamers. So far it has an amazing direction and the characters are a joy to watch. After watching the train wreck that Digimon Adventure 2020 was I was gladly surprised to see Ghost Game.

Only watched episode 1 of Komi-San last night. I'm still taken aback by how gorgeous it is. It's literally the manga brought to life.
We'll have to see how this goes as the season progresses but for now, I'm really hyped for it
Takt.Op feels like one of those anime that looks good and cool but is gonna suffer in plot developtment later.
@@MrTigracho yeah that was the thing made it feel off like it looks good sounds good but i just dont see where the plot can go to be good
@@MrTigracho for someone who auto watch anime with music theme . Episode 1 is kinda meh
@Suzerain I just started reading Words of Radiance last night and holy cow it is a HEFTY book.
@@Fedorchik1536 That’s cap. Sakugan so far is much better than Takt.
One of my favorite
I haven't read the Manga, but based on the first two episodes, it's very wholesome, and Yuzu is best girl.
@@marcgoodman4862 yes
@@marcgoodman4862 I watched the first episode on a whim with zero expectations, and now I'm already at 2/3 of the manga. Definitely read the manga if you liked the anime, there's a lot of detail lost in the adaptation. The character and relationship development as the months and years passes are great, and the author does a very good job at painting the Taisho era society (even with historical events).
And yes, Yuzu is even better girl in the manga! The art is adorably cute
This. I'm surprised this was not on the list. (And that Sakugan and Laika Nosferatu are)
Thanks for putting these lists together, it makes it a lot easier for me to sort through stuff.
Spoilers -Maybe
The Manga scene is just one panel, after some exposition, but! they animate it to show the flow of them communicating, as each start at one end of the black board, the music crescendos as the finally meet in the middle, the ending shot seems like a haphazard mess, but to those in the know its a flow of little conversational moments understood fully to the two of them alone.
Spoilers -Maybe
I don't know why but that scene gave me lowkey goosebumps
I’m okay with it being on Netflix, better than Crunchy. At least I don’t need a separate subscription for this anime.
I'm still dying over here from Mushoku Tensei's animation and worldbuilding.
I'm just trying hard to avoid spoilers and watch the full show in one sitting.
@@janisir4529 If by full you mean full story then you'll need to wait until about 90-100 episodes are adapted which will take about 4 years at best
@@yankotliarov9239 crap...
Let's just go with season 2 for now then.
@@janisir4529 season 2 will still be a year or two also, since what's airing right now is the second cour if season 1
@@lemoncitrine7023 could they not complicate the naming schemes ffs.
It's so much simpler when an anime just has 13-24 episodes and then it's done.
My current list for this season is Komi-San, Takt.Op, Mieruko-Chan, My Senpai Is Annoying, and The Vampire Dies In No Time.
I think you’re sleeping on Platinum End. So my new show of season.
Please watch ousama ranking. It's really good.
So basically pure mediocrity
@@Exel3nce Ya the ones he listed are really generic main stream mediocrity. He should watch heike or ousama ranking or something.
8:35
- Vampire waifu
- Space race
- S-tier Soviet aesthetic
Yes, I recommend it.
I love Bojji, i can relate to him as a disabled individual. Amazing Ranking of Kings
I tear up when seeing Komi-san animated. What a time to be alive, honestly :')
"Hamster Eating Banana"
You sir. Are a man of culture and I love you for it
blue period honestly made me tear up in the first two episodes-- the mc pointing out how much his mother does for him and how he never would've noticed it if he wasn't trying to draw her got me :' being an artist means you're paying attention to things around you and you'll start noticing so many more things and it'll make you more vulnerable as well,, think i just love it because it feels personal so i might pick up the manga whenever i feel like it ᕙ(⇀‸↼‶)ᕗ
0:58-1:02 I like seeing that even all these years later recognition is still given to the masterpiece which is spice and wolf.
I look forward to these videos every anime season! Thank you so much for the hard work!
Shame because the world on display is fairly interesting and the production is great
Mushoku Tensei is a masterpiece
@@sunlitsonata6853 100%, a lot of it's great but i just cannot get over the main character's pervyness. Thankfully Faraway Paladin is also airing
Woah woah woah hold on a minute. You’re reading the manga? Don’t want ti be that guy but bad move, the manga cuts out more information, worldbuilding, character moments and general plot than the anime (but it makes up for it in the art). If you want to read Mushoku Tensei, then read the Light Novel, even if you’re not one for books, just read the LN, trust me
Bro... If you... If you really like mushoku tensei, Go read the novels
Heike Monogatari it's The Tale of Princess Kaguya Tv-series version, and i love it
Also Ousama Rangking it's the most interesting anime in this season
12:38: while Armadillos can be decent in a house, humans and armadillos can pass lepracy between each other, and a high presentage of cases in both north and south America are form people handling them, so I don't recommend owning one.
John doesn't care for human simplicities. He's too busy being the best armadillo.
@@richmcgee434 I wasn't talking about the anime, I was talking to anyone who was thinking about getting an armadillo as a pet because of the anime.
Between Irina, Vanitas and Mars Red, vampire anime are kind of having a moment this year.
Komi has been the most amazing thing so far. Had big feels by the end of ep 1
John The Armadillo is one of the best characters ever
This season was surprisingly strong when you consider how stacked the beginning of the year was. Heike Story is an absolute masterpiece and I am really drawn in by Blue Period, Sakugan, Komi, and Takt.Op Destiny. Even Faraway Paladin seems like a pleasant surprise for the Iseikai genre.
Apart from Summer, every season has been solid with animes
Looks like modern anime have pretty good quality in general.
Thanks for the info. It's really hard to adapt such shows and I had a hunch they were rushing it while watching and. Thanks for conforming it
@@misha130 No problem mate I've got your back! Always glad to guide people on the best possible path
The best part about it is the opening (fucking banger lmao)
god of run on sentences has blessed us once again
Blue Period is probably one of my favourate manga and I quiet enjoyed paladin, so this season for manga adaptation is very strong. And this is not even mentioning Komi, and I have heard very good things about it; I have high hopes.
Oh, thanks for putting the titles up at the end. That is a really nice touch. Please keep doing that!
how you transition from point to point whether from advertising aa product to the actual content of the video is masterful t say the least, you have my respect
Mother basement is the goat for mentioning this masterpiece. I never saw even one big anituber creators talking about this
The release of these videos are basically personal holidays for me at this point. Thanks as always.
So fun fact about My senpai is Annoying! You mention Wotakoi in your review of it, Well they are more connected than you think! Wotakoi has a picture of My Senpai is Annoying artwork in Episode 2, a full 2 years before the anime release.
I'm so glad to see Ousama Ranking on the list, also the op is a banger.

Yes sir
2021 may be remembered as a year long redemption arc for anime in the words of Gigguk. At least based on what he said at the start of the year.
what do you think of Taisho Otome Fairy Tale im liking it so far, you listed everything else im watching lol
Kinda similar to Shinigami Bocchan to kuro maid
Also. Mieruko chan's might have less fanservices in the upcoming episodes when the series start to get more serious unless Passione studio decides to do their magic touch
Always love these videos. Huge amounts of respect.
The reason I tried out Heike Monogatari was because it was produced by Science Saru, Masaki Yuasa’s studio. Now it’s my favourite of this season
Good idea with the list at the end, nothing particularly piqued my interest this season but it will definitely make it easier to come back to this video, as your Ones to watch is basically always my anime to-do list for the next 3 months
Your energy and clever writing really sell every show. Pumped to add these to my list.
Nobody gives a single fuck, but Yuki Yuna is a hero season 3 is my favorite anime of the season so far. It's been so long and I'm excited to see what happens!
I still need to check that series out!

Either way it's a great series and I do recommend it
i a huge fan of the franchise
I remember running across the series on TVTropes under "Magical Girl Subversions" but haven't watched it, mostly because the only place I could find it hosted appeared to have god awful subtitles according to the customer reviews. Sad that Taisho Otome Fairy Tale didn't get a mention, easily the best rom com of the season for me and it has some nice drama overtones as well
one of the things i love abt the blue period manga is that a lot of the student's art is done by actual art students that contributed their pieces to give each character their own unique style. that's such a cool thing that i haven't really seen done before
Thanks so much for putting all the shows you mentioned on screen at the end! It's much appreciated.
